What were your excuses?

One of my tasks at work is to sign readmission slips for our students. Students get readmission slips for different reasons. 1. absences 2. tardiness 3. non-wearing of uniform 4. non-wearing of I.D. A part of the readmission slip requires the students to indicate their reasons for committing any of the above-mentioned. I get to encounter different reasons. Some valid, others not-so-valid, and the rest are VERY FUNNY. For instance, a student who was sent out for not wearing the prescribed uniform would write this reason on his/her readmission slip: "The iron burned my uniform" or "My uniform is under construction". Okay, they are probably valid reasons but because of the way they were worded makes the statements very funny. Or, a student who was absent would write this reason: "My grandmother died again". Oh yes! That really made me laugh and laugh and laugh until I already got teary-eyed. Many of those who are asked to get a readmission slip for being late in their classes have a common reason: TRAFFIC. Well, depending on the situation, traffic may be accepted as a valid reason. How about you? When you were a student, what were your excuses or alibis?

I only qualify to the tardiness because I actually don't like wearing improperly wearing uniforms, I find it very untidy so I've never been given that slip about that or even the former. My alibi about my tardiness is traffic too, but I'm not really living that far from school and I even wake up on time, but that's how life is, I'm only 20 minutes away from campus but the traffic sucks. I also come to school late because I usually assume that my professor comes later than me, and when I'm out of luck I would arrive at school and the prof is already there. LOL! There are times that I would forget wearing or bringing my I.D. card with me, and I just sacrifice my first subject to go home and get it. But when it's 'wash day' I don't bother because the guard doesn't check it usually when we're in civilian clothes.

Just wondering is this for college students or high school students? I never experience this things when I was in highs school but maybe because I seldom been absence or late and I don't go to school if I don't have an ID or not in uniform. In college I always go to the guidance office simply because of no ID. lols. I think in one sem I loss twice or thrice my ID. lols.

I was always the type of person who was on time for everything, but I had a lot of friends who had some very funny excuses about why they were not able to go to class. One of the things that I heard the most was because they had an appointment mid morning, and this meant that there was no point coming in to school before as they would have to leave almost straight away, and then they would say that there was a delay in the waiting room so that they were not able to make it into school for the afternoon. So they would basically be able to get a whole day off from an appointment which will only have taken about fifteen minutes in the first place.

hi dear dolce_vita we didnt have to wear uniforms as students. I didnt skip school when I was a student cause I was too anxious it would be found out and I would run into trouble at home then. Over here we are mature with 18 and it was fun to write my own excuses but I never abused this privilege. When I studied to be a librarian I only flunked some classes now and then which were really booooring where I could be sure I wont miss out on anything important.

I like the funny reasons or excuses. It makes me smile and not laugh. Smile because I'm alone while responding to this discussion. "Uniform under construction" is something to ponder upon for a minute or two. If you say that in your language, it would be right. When they put it in English, it becomes different. I understand you're doing your job well in your work but have you tried to know more about the students' reason? It might be valid if you're in their circumstance at the moment. Of course, some students will invent some excuses. When I was a student, i didn't have to give reasons and excuses, I'm the favorite of all my teachers. My secret: I talk to my instructors before we meet in class. I explain to them with a big smile and a helping hand. They know me so they don't dare to do me something they would regret. With lots of laughs...

When I was a student, My most excuses are traffic, since my university is miles away from my home. Even I go to an earlier time, when the rush hour comes, I can't deny that I would be late for classes. When I was absent, well I would say that I'd go to some place or doing some necessary paper works (Birth Certificates, Licenses). And fortunately, it is good as i thought.
