I used to travel from the midwest to new england (USA) and back, by train. The trip one way took about 28 hours (if I'm remembering right). The first time I was excited about going through the mountains of Pennsyvania by train, looking forward to lots of great scenery. I was veRy dissappointed, when I realized we went through the mountains at night!! Bad planning by Amtrak, I say!

These days I don't travel by train because there are none near us, but the first major train trip I did was from Brisbane (Queensland) to Melbourne (Victoria). In those days it was overnight from Brisbane to Sydney - 12 hours. Then wait around the city all day till the train left that evening, and it was another 12 hours to Melbourne. Things have vastly improved since then of course and now it takes about 9 hours for each leg of the trip. :)
