it's the part of the theatre or cinema that sells tickets - so it's become mental shorthand for how well a film's done in sales. Good box offie means it's sold a lot of tickets, bad box Office is the oppisite

In old time, there was a seperate place in the theatre or cinema hall that usually not opened, only opened when all places are filled and/or they have any distingished guest. That seperate place is called box office. When any movie has got so popuplar that rest of the place in hall filled and they have to open the box office for people then it is said the movie if box office hit.
