FFXII combat system |
|
What are your thoughts on the new combat system implemented in Final Fantasy XII? At first I hated it, but now that I am getting used to it, I guess it's not so bad. I still miss the old style though!

1. Akkhima (21) | 4 years ago | I definitely miss the old style, but I do like that there's no interruption from the flow of walking to get into a battle, you actually walk up to the monsters.
It doesn't "feel" as much like a Final Fantasy game because of the system, another reason why I would have preferred they kept it.
But, besides the issues of tradition, it's a good system. It allows multiple characters to be managed in real time, and it takes a bit of thought and skill to make it work well.

BunGirl (1650) | 4 years ago | I agree. I liked the way battles flowed in the old style, but I don't miss the wait while a battle is loading. I am very glad for the Gambits system though!!!

| BLUE_SERAPH (91) | 4 years ago | I too like the new gambit system because it saves time rather than the old screen to screen random enemy encounters. The monsters are there you can avoid them if you want or fight if you want. This system gives us freedom to choose to fight or just run, saving time and effort, fighting weak monsters and option to run fighting strong enemies. And they also need this gambit system because of the new magic "dont move or immobilize" which only appeared in the game final fantasy tactics.

| 6. pool4meeh (20) | 4 years ago | i mean ya the old system was cool too but for FF VII, anything after was whatever. But did anyone notice the change of names of the magics?? Like in FF7, they had fire1,fire2,fire3,thunder1,thunder2....from ff8 and on they went to fire, fira, firaga, etc.. i didnt like it at 1st but now its kool

lancingboy (986) | 3 years ago | The FF games before FF7 were all on the Nintendo and Super Nintendo and the names of spells and abilities were limited to a small box. That is why the magic appeared like Blt1, Blt2, Blt3, ect. They did the same thing on FF7 because that was the first Final Fantasy game on the Playstation, so they wanted to see if they could add more characters to the box. They decided the Playstation disks could handle the information so they changed the names to Fire, Fira, Firaga, Firaja, ect.

| 7. pneumatics (8) | 4 years ago | I love the Gambit system of FFXII this is where you test your strategy skill. You can defeat higher level monster by just having a good gambit and thinking. In my expirience I defeated Yiazmat with this character level w/o going to the save crystal
Vaan - 85 Basch -83 Ashe - 84
I took me hard a time when he use threatening Growth which doubles his level because he can wipe out my character with his cyclone.

8. xtedaxcvg (1655) | 4 years ago | I think it's awesome. I myself would want to move out of enemy range and dodge attacks sometimes. It also is close to reality even though it's just a game.

9. konzen (242) | 4 years ago | I miss the turn based battle system previous FF titles used. But the new is not that bad, after you've set the gambits you can just leave it. It's also what I don't like about it you miss the interactivity of giving commands every now and then.

| 10. darkedge (56) | 4 years ago | to me real time means fast action. FFXII doesn't have that, every time you want to hit, you have to wait. It really looks like the battle system in dot hack serie 1. In dot hack serie 2 they added a combo system and skills making the game quite fast though there aren't enough skills.
the reason of turn base battle was to give tons of skills and magics and to make them really mind blowing, over the top overkill effects, FFXII lost it.
The magics are really small and unimpressif contrary to any other FF.It is the same magic for any elements just with different colors, lvl 1 and 3 are pretty much identical too and magics area just make the char launch the magic over and over again, instead of doing one big screen blowing attack.
Even the summoning are the same, they just attack every 5 secs,it would have been better to make them dash toward a monster and bash them with a combo. even their last attack are boring,it doesn't even look like they are hitting anything. It remind me of the summoning in wild arms 1 on ps1.
if they improve this, the battle system can become the best one ever but right now it's very disappointing.

|
| BLUE_SERAPH (91) | 4 years ago | Yup, i agree with you. The summon monsters are somewhat useless and sometimes too weak to fight bigger and stronger enemies. You'll end up fighting 3 characters than with an esper. And most of all, a summon would consume almost all your magic gauge. I too wish they will improve this and will add combos and stronger summons that doesnt consume all magic points.

BunGirl (1650) | 4 years ago | Once you get farther into the game, you get some of those old "over the top" magics, but you have to earn the licenses.
