Do people know how to tip a server and why they should? |
| |
| One thing that really makes me upset is when I see that people in a food establishment doesn't tip their server. These people work on their feet and literally run to make the customers happy. Generally they work for minimum wage, and some states even allow them to work for LESS than minimum because their tips are supposed to make up for the difference. It is only fitting that you tip your server at least 15%. A more generous tip is fitting in a classier eating establishment. Show your server that you appreciate what she or he has done for you, especially if it's very good service. If it's normal to poor service, try not to go below 10% minimum. If the server is rude, that's the only time I will leave NO tip at all. Generally, it's rude to leave pennies for a tip or as part of the tip. It is considered an insult to the server. | | | | | |

| | What i can say is that it all depends on the quality of service the server is giving to me. I dont really care which establishment i am, as long as the server is nice then i will give tip. I've been to many restaurants and some are really scary servers. How can I give tip to somebody who doesnt even smile to to somebody who ignores me. The quality of service for me is a big factor for this tipping subject. | | | | | | |

| | I used to be a server at a restaurant. It was really lousy because they would never give me many tables since I was the newest employee. They paid me something like 2.15 an hour that when you get significant tables and tips it is not so bad. But since I didn't have so many tables, they'd put me to work in the back doing what the hostesses were supposed to do when business is slow (they got paid like 8 or 9 bucks). So tip your servers well, especially if they ate really really attentive. | | | |

| | Other employees do just as much work as the waiter/waitresses. Why not tip them as well? They took the time to make the food, to wash the dish, to furnish the table, but yet we feel only the waiter/waitress is worthy of a tip. Only if the waiter/waitress is actually getting paid less than the other workers, should the person be tipped. Complaining that a person 'should' be tipped all the time and anytime is just a strategy and traditional thing for someone trying to take more people's money. They signed up for the job with an agreed amount of pay, and the person ordered the food with an agreed amount to pay, requesting any more or less is unnecessary, the pay goes with the whole meal, including those that make the food, those that serve the food, and all other workers responsible for 'serving' the customer. Only if the person is actually being paid less, and doing an equal amount of work as the other workers should the person be tipped. And even that is questionable, as they know what they've agree upon on the application, and it actually depends on the customers satisfaction. If the person says no, then that is fine. If the person says yes, then that's his choice and his money. | | | |

| | waitstaff tip out the people who help them like bus boys in a lot of restaurants, so if you don't tip you waiter/waitress then you are also hurting the people who brought you water and cleaned off your table. You should always tip, at least something. | | | |

| | I've never been a waiter but I used to deliver pizza, and I agree. A tip is deserved. And when your pizza is late, you have to realize that most of the time that isn't the drivers fault. I always tip my servers and drivers well, because they are allowed to pay them less than minimum wage here. My brother's fiance is a waitress and she makes $3.50/hr. Luckily she's good at it so she averages about $8.50/hr after tips. But other girls who aren't as good aren't as lucky. | | | | | | |

| | Absolutely agree with the tip thing. I grew up in Vegas so maybe that's why it's prevalent to me. Personally I'm a 30 percenter as far as restaurant servers. If the service is lacking I'll still throw down 20%. I'm a regular at many establishments so the next time they'll be on their toes. Could just be having a bad day. Tip everyone from the computer tech to the cable guy. My husband thinks I'm ridiculous. I figure hey - if the work was executed in an efficient manner that makes my day that much easier. | | | | | | |

| | I will usually tip 10% if the service is mediocre. I tip 15 to 20 percent if its good or great service. If a server goes out of the way to be really tops, I tell them verbally, and usually mention it to the top brass. You shouldn't need a calculator...who can't calculate 10 or 20 percent? Go back to school, do no pass go, do not collect your diploma. | | | |

| | I am a strong believer of tipping my waiter/waitress what they deserve. If they are awesome and friendly i will give them more than what is expected. I dont mean they have to be super dooper fast or anything. As long as they are nice and do their jobs well then i will tip them accordingly. | | | | | | |

| | I used to be a waitress while in college so I know what it's like to get stiffed for working my butt off. I hated people who left pennies too. I always try to tip as much as I feel is fit. Sometimes this is 20% or more. Though there are also times when I don't feel like a server deserves a tip at all. If you're rude or lazy it's not my responsibility to make sure that you get paid. Like any job you get paid for doing the job well. If you're talking to your friends or co-workers instead of filling my drink or while my food is getting cold ... forget it! Also just as a tip to get more tips ... talk to my kids and tell me they're cute! I'm a sucker for that! | | | | | | |

| | I agree. A friendly waitress or waiter deserves a higher tip than one who simply does her job and that's all. | | | |

| | i do not think tipping is compulsary, where ever it is the most lowly restaurant or the most classy one, but i do feel they work a lot and try to serve you at early as possible so tipping them i think would be i good idea, and i do myslef tip them whenever i go out for a dinner or lunch. | | | | | | |

| | I would like to point something out to the lame stiffers out there. Keep in mind (at least here in the US) that servers do much more than serve, buss tables, prep salads, soup etc.. sometime wash the dishes, vacum, clean equipment, counters, set up the sald bar, fill dressings, date the containers, not to mention putting up with rude people. Many establishment have the server TIP OUT which is to share a percentage of their tips with the bus person, or host. Also in the U.S. the IRS collects income tax on your tips. they set the average tip rate at around 10% that is taxed weather you make that or not. so what I mean is if a server sells $200.00 in food the IRS figures they made at least 10% of that in tips. $20.00 he server is taxed on that as well as their wage. So no tip? they still pay out to the IRS regardless. Please remember that next time you pinch your pennies. Oh and about the penny thing. If you tip a server a real tip and leave a two of pennies in adition to the tip that is a signal that their service was good. One penny means not so good. TIPS: To Insure Proper Service. That is why you give a skycap at the airport a tip. Per bag is usually the way you figure it. This is to insure your bags are on your plane. Stiff a skycap some time. LOL... and they make a GREAT wage compared to servers.

| | It's very sad that restaurants pay below minimum wage. Tipping a server who has done a great job is fitting. If they haven't done such a great job maybe a small tip would be alright, just perchance it wasn't their fault. | | | | | | |

| | Hi! I agree. Also, many of these servers work for less than minimum wage because they get tips, or at least they do in my area. I even tip the servers at places like Sonic where they actually have to bring the food out of the building and to your car. Tipping is important, everyone has to make a living, and these people have to work extra hard! :-) | | | | | | |

| | heh, I don't really work IN a restaurant, but I do deliver pizzas for pizza hut. In the last month, I've been stiffed (no tip at all) more than 5 times. I am always polite and haven't been late for a long time. I have also heard stories of Pizza delivery drivers getting stabbed and shot while doing their jobs frequently in different parts of the country. I'm only working to try and help pay for college, and every delivery takes gas and puts wear and tear on the car (not to mention they tax all of your tips and deduct it from your paycheck). I mean c'mon people, I'll take 2 or 3 bucks on a $40 order, but a stiff....delivery drivers have to drive through dark neighborhoods at night looking for your address, and sort of risk their own lives. At 5.15 an hour paycheck (which really just covers wear & tear on the car and some of the gas), the only real money you make is from tips. On the other hand, waiters seem to have a harder job as they interact with their guests numerous times and tend to whatever they need vs. me dropping off a pizza and returning to the store to do dishes. Therefore, I agree with the 15% for waiters, its only fair. | | | |
