That was a great book! I haven't found anything else quite like it. But I did think The Glass Castle was also very good and quite similar.
So what other books do you like?

I love that book! I am on a bookgroup and I'm just waiting for the follow up DRY to come in the mail.
Other really great books I read this year were "A Home at the End of the world" by Michael Cunningham, "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenger and "THe Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd.
You might like christopher Moore. Have you ever read him?

Christopher Moore writes humorous books... like "The Lust Lizard of Meloncholy Cove" "Island of the Sequined Love Nun" and "Bite Me". I laugh out loud when I read his books.
I really think you would like "A Home At the End of the World" after reading some of your other posts.

Not sure if I've ever read Christopher Moore. I don't tend to remember author's names because they're only mentioned once on audiobooks, instead of constantly seeing them on the cover.
I loved "The Time Traveler's Wife"! That was a great book.

I have not read the book, but here is what I thought about the movie:
This isn’t one of those times where just a book is misrepresented when turned into a film, but also a life.
RUNNING WITH SCISSORS is based off of the memoirs of Augusten Burroughs and how he grew up abandoned by his parents and adopted by his mother’s eccentric shrink. Director Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of Augusten’s messy life is…well, a mess.
The casting choice of Joseph Cross for the lead role was an odd one. He is supposed to appear as a 15 year old and younger and yet he looks more like he is 18 or 19. His acting was lacking passion considering the part and the feelings meant to be portrayed.
Let us examine the supporting cast by strengths and faults. Annette Bening plays Augusten’s mother and gets an A- for her efforts to bring talent into the chaotic mixture. Her character is indeed a fun one to listen to once she starts popping the pills. Brian Cox playing the shrink has his moments, but the character isn’t developed likeable enough and eventually fades away. Everyone else: Joseph Fines, Evan Rachel Wood, Alec Baldwin, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Gabrielle Union all are reduced to mere background cameo fodder. What should be a cast of talent and character quirkiness becomes a disorganized bore.
The story seems like one that should be wrought with humor and yet aside from one tear-inducing, hilarious moment from Brian Cox near the mid-beginning I was yawning. The eccentric set-ups fall short of being funny and the fact that this is all supposedly based on a real life person should add to the drama and value, however even that fails to save things.
This movie makes me want to go and read the book; surely Hollywood doesn’t want us to stop watching movies and start reading again, does it? One funny moment, one great Annette Bening, and one long waste of time if you sit through this whole movie. RUNNING WITH SCISSORS is not a safe bet for entertainment

Some excellent points there.
I found when watching the movie that if I had not have read the book, I probably wouldn't have understood it. I think a better movie could have been made from this book. The book is hilarious, I listened to it on audio. But the movie skipped around too much. There is too much in the book to show it all in a movie, but still. I agree that it certainly could have been better.

I loved Running With Scissors. A friend of mine gave me three of Augusten Burrough's books (Running With Scissors, Magical Thinking, and Possible Side Effects) and they were all excellent. I recommend reading anything by him if you liked Running With Scissors.

My Parents Went Through the Holocaust and All I Got Was This Lousy Tshirt by S. Hanala Stadner
The chapter titles alone are enough to make you laugh out loud! The author has put herself on the line with a great, yet sure to be, eye raising title. AND does she ever deliver. I laughed, I cried, and I felt very strongly for what she went through. Stadner writes with tremendous heartfelt honesty, and her story made me, a non-jewish person, feel more for the holocaust victims and their families than I ever did. Hanala has a gift for storytelling, and that gift flows effortlessly page after page in this book. After all that she went through it is quite a triumph to have written it down in a book where people of all beliefs can benefit from it. BRAVO!
