Rolling Stone mag has named Bob Dylan's album "Modern Times" the best album of 2006, and Gnarls Barkley's single "Crazy" the top single of the year.

Also on the best-album list:
2. Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Stadium Arcadium"
3. Sonic Youth, "Rather Ripped"

The other singles in Rolling Stone's top three:
2. The Raconteurs, "Steady As She Goes" [the group with Jack White of the White Stripes]
3. Chamillionaire, "Ridin'"

The Rolling Stone Web site lists the year's 100 Best Songs and 50 Best Records; you can find the information at www.rollingstone.com

What do you think of these picks? What do you think were the best album and single, and why?

I guess I am product of the media culture, because I agree with most of it!! The Chili Peppers song "Dani California" was a blow out and a great riff. That song sounded very similar to their older style. Great tune!! The song "Crazy" was a splash of fun....sounding very retro and having very entertaining lyrics. "Steady as She Goes" is a very catch song (I had know idea the White Stripes guy was involved in it-no wonder I like it so much!!!). I am not real big on that style of music, but just the same that one is a favorite of mine of 2006.

Yes, Jack White is one of the leaders of the band, I forget there's another guy in the group who's from another well known band. I actually haven't heard much of the Raconteurs, but that Gnarls Barkley is incredibly infectious....

hmmm, i do like gnarls barkley, but the chilli peppers alb got mixed reviews...the raconteurs single was okay, i didn't think it was particulary fantastic, but i do have it on my mp3 player!
..my fav single, now i could make a list as long as my arm! I loved Muse's Supermassive Blackhole but that was just one..i think i'd need to start a seperate discussion! lol!

I don't think I've even heard that Muse song. I listen to radio stations that are off the beaten track (college & public radio stations), so I don't hear a lot of the groups that are real popular these days.

I certainly agree with the first two choices - I was blown away by Bod Dylan's 'Modern Times' rather ironic as I first heard him in 1965 and then saw him at the Isle of Wight festival in 1969.
The Gnarls Barclay single was also brilliant, a real stamp on the summer of 2006 here in UK.

Bob Dylan's Modern Times put him right back at the

Wow, Zimmy at the Isle of Wight! That must have been something. I saw him back in 1982, I think it was, and he put on a real good show . I hear his performances have always been a mixed bag, some nights he's really on, other nights he doesn't seem into it.

Gnarls Barkley "Crazy" became my theme song for a while. I still love this song. It made me feel less crazy than what I was actually feeling. LOL

Crazy I couldn't get out of my head. It still pops into my consciousness at random times during the pay. Maybe it's an exercise in mind control. If it is, it's working!
