Can you understand when Chinese speak English?

it is hard for me to understand chinese people too, i don't know why but it might actually be there accent in the way they speak english, if this makes sense to anybody.

I fail to see the problem. If a chinese person has a limited command of english then of course it will be difficult, but that applies to anyone speaking a foriegn language with a limited vocabularly. It also applies to myself when attempting to converse in spanish. Providing that the person in question has a reasonable understanding of english then there is no problem. The accent may be different than mine, but there are so many diverse accents among the British population that it makes very little difference. One of my neighbours is either Chinese or of chinese descent, but her english is better than that of most englishmen.

You are right it is difficult sometimes with them and with people from India. I think it is because their pronounciation is so different then what we are used to.

Interesting question. I am in the medical field and have dealt with many foreign doctors. Come to think about it, the nationality that is more often than not most difficult to understand is Chinese. I wonder why that's so. Does anyone have a theory?

It's not only Chinese , a lot of other nationalities in asia and africa have great difficulties pronouncing English right, I bet that Chinese will also laugh at me if i tried to speak Chinese and will find it very hard to understand me lol

most chinese can't speak english well. i have knows a lot of chinese people. and i do understand what is it they are saying when they speak to me in chopped english. sometimes, i read through their facial expressions as well. helps a lot.
