Is the zoo some place you would visit in the winter where you live? I do visit a nearby zoo in the winter, because it has lots of inside exhibits. I particularly enjoy the tropical rainforest building.

right now it is dry weather, and we have a membership to the zoo. so yes, I would visit, it isn't too cold yet. It also has some indoor exhibits. Our zoo also has lights out for christmas too, someday we'll have to go to that.

depends on the city and the weather. most zoos are, but I would call ahead just to be on the safe side

For me, in this hot state, the winter is the best time. In the summer, it is too hot to walk around, and too hot for the animals, so they hide and you cannot see them.
