How to chop wood

My husband is out of town for a few days and I have to cut wood for the fireplace!!!! My son is helping and he is better than me already. OK we use this one big round piece and put other pieces of wood on top of that one and hit it with the ax. He showed me how to slide my hands down the ax as I lower it and I know to bend with my knees. Some of it I can get pretty good. Its kinda fun, powerful,almost therapy, comming down hard on that wood and having it bust apart! lol But all the little ones are gone, and I cant get a dent in the big round ones. How do I get it started? Men, help me out here. What am I saying women too!
