American Girl dolls

A few little girls that I know are just addicted to these dolls, looking at the website and catalogue multiple times a week, sometimes daily. I find that they are well-made dolls and the clothes and accessories are very good quality... but they are so EXPENSIVE! Especially for people that live outside the US and are ordering these dolls, paying the shipping as well as an exchange rate. I know of one woman who took her daughter on a trip to New York City so they could visit the American Girl retail store. They even paid something like $30 to have the DOLL's hair done. Maybe I'm overly frugal (sounds nicer than "cheap" lol) but I think that paying close to $100 for a doll (or more, if you buy the "starter collection") or $20 or $30 for doll's clothes, is a LOT. Do you know of these dolls? How do you feel about expensive children's toys? I love my kids to pieces but, had they wanted these dolls when they were little, I don't know that I could have bought them....
