Would you let your friend borrow your car? email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 98/100. sweetgirl_k1 (3153)3 years ago

I was just thinking about this today. Our neighbor's car broke down and I was thinking well what if she comes and asks me to borrow my car (she is a friend of ours). I don't really know what I'd tell her. I would want to let her borrow it to be nice because I would know she needs it but then what if I had an emergency and then I was without a car. What would you do--would you let them borrow it or not?

I wouldn't advise it because of insurance policies. Most insurance policies don't cover other drivers unless you are in the vehicle with them.I would just tell her you can't because of your insurance policy.I doubt she'll ask to borrow it though. If she does, then I guess you'll have to go with your gut instinct.Heck I wouldn't even let my 17 year old borrow my car.Maybe your neighbor can pay for a rental car?I hope she gets her car fixed and that she doesn't put you in a position to let her borrow yours.Good luck.

If it is someone you trust, yes I would. Allow her to borrow it on a day when you don't have anything planned. Also, ask that she keep her outting brief in case you have an emergency arise. I would have her take a cell phone with her in case you need to contact her. Perhaps she could ride with you one day if she needed something while you were out.

I wouldn't think of "if there was a emergency" I trust my friend and she has borrowed my car when her car was out of order as well as I have borrowed hers. If there was a serious emergency I would call 911 or something I HAVE to do, I would just call her on her cell...

I guess I just worry about emergencies because I take care of other people's children in my home.

That's why they have rental agencies and Enterprise will even pick you up free. I would never even think of asking a friend for their car, it could end a good friendship FAST.

Yes if they are a good driver. I have loanedmine out many times in the past. Some people no I will drive them and tell them my insurance will not cover them. If they have never had a wreck and they are not wild I will loan it out with the understanding I have to have the same amount of gasoline put back in it.

I don't think I would be able to allow a friend to borrow my car sadly.. I've had bad experiences in doing this & I think you truly need to trust someone to be able to allow them to borrow your car.. Even though the person may be a good friend I think sometimes allowing a person to borrow items such as this.. Would end up costing you in the long run..

If the person was to have an accident or something with your vehicle.. I think that would be scary if you had to dish out money to repair an item for the accident your friend had gotten in to.. It not only would set you back, but at the same time.. What if an emergency suddenly had appeared.. What would a person do if this was to happen if they didn't have a vehicle to get to the place of destination in case of an emergency?! . .

I think if a friend had asked if they could borrow my car.. I would explain to them why I don't think it would be a good idea.. But I also wouldn't just allow them to have no where of getting to the place they have to go to.. Instead I would offer to give them a ride to the place they are wanting to go.. Instead of just allowing them to find another way of getting to there destination.

I would also recommend to them maybe taking a cab to the place they need to go to.. If they weren't willing to accept my offer in me being willing to drive them to there destination.. That maybe by taking a cab that it would be a good choice for them in thee end. I don't think it should matter what form of transportation they may take.. But how they get there is what should truly matter in the long run.. At least in my opinion..

I just dislike the idea of anyone for that matter borrowing my car.. Because if they we're to let's say hit someone with my car.. And drive away from the scene then I would be held liable for what had happened.. Unless it was proven that I wasn't the one driving the car.. But still sometimes you will end up being blamed in the end because you had allowed the person to use your vehicle.. Instead of denying them this right..

I know that I personally wouldn't want to go through something such as this.. And if I was to explain this to a friend you'd think if they we're a good friend.. That they would be more than willing to understand my point of view.. Instead of getting offended by my response or reasoning..

I think it's best sometimes to not allow yourself to get involved in situations such as these.. Sometimes lending items such as this helps to end a friendship in the long run.. Especially if something was to happen to your vehicle.. And the friend wasn't willing to pay for what damage they may have done to your vehicle.. I honestly would much rather try to avoid at any costs losing a friend to something like this.. I think it's best not to involve friendship in to these types of situations..

In conclusion.. Even though I may trust a friend or care for them deeply.. Allowing them to borrow something such as this.. I know would only end up costing me in the end.. I try to avoid situations such as this.. And quite honestly.. Just because I would be denying my friend the right to borrow my car.. That doesn't mean that I care for them any less or trust them any less..

I wouldn't honestly just allow them to be stuck when it comes to getting to there destination.. I would find a way of getting them to the destination they are needing to go to.. I care for the people around me & don't ever want to set them back in life.. But I think a true friend would be more than willing to understand my point of view.. And if they weren't it makes me honestly question there motives in the long run! . .
Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

I don't let my friends borrow my car. It is to much of a risk. God forbid they get into an accident and your car is totaled and you both are without a car. I only let my boyfriend and my sister borrow my car, that's all.

You are presenting here a no-no situation. Never lend your vehicle/s to anyone. All accidents and incidents that go with it, you are anwerable for it. Besides, when you bought your car, it is for the sole use of the family. Everything outside of that is therefore excluded in the plan. Stick to it and stay out of trouble...so, if this thing of having a broken car happens to you, you already know there's now way you'd be borrowing somebody else's car. Better to be on the lookout for a car for rent or something else to that effect while getting your own car fixed immediately.
