Any advice for writing for associatedcontent.com?

I have heard a lot of about associated content in the past few weeks on various sites, and I went ahead and made an account there, but I haven't written or submitted anything there yet. I minored in English in college, and can write fairly well, so I thought I'd give it a shot.
I'm an artist, but I take alot of breaks from painting to do other things, mainly on the computer. I also like to have money coming in from various sources because some months are better than others with selling paintings.
Anyway, I was wondering if any of you who have been writing for them for a while have some good advice for me before I get started? Thanks!

I've found that you can write about whatever you want to write about, but they pay by how rare your topic is usually. Also, they send messages to you on the site from time to time with special assignments that they would like to see and will usually pay you $10 for unless the content is not very good.
