The Strangest Things We Inherit From Our Family Genes!!

February 1, 2007 8:41pm CST
When I had my kids I was amazed at some of the traits they had inherited from my side of the family and my partners. My son would always walk around on his toes, which my mum said she used to do as a kid. My son stays up really late which both myself and my partner used to do when we were young. My daughter used to have sudden outbursts to sing out loud-opera style, which is something I always used to do as a kid. These have not been learnt by my kids but something they have developed genetically. I must admit I find it fascinating. As well as the good genes we past down through the generations, there does seem to be some odd ones that come along for the ride. Do you experience the same within your family?

My mother was an opera singer when she was young and I remember her singing all the time but I never started singing myself until I was older. She didn't teach me and I didn't take classes. Now, I'm far from being an opera singer but I do have a good voice and love karoke but it's been a while for that as well...My husband likes my voice when I do decide to sing something. But it's funny. Our son, CJ used to and still does on occasion, walk on his toes. We thought it was just an Autistic trait but found out that my husband used to do it when he was a kid...Hey, wait a minute...perhaps my husband has Autism...lol And this part is very embarrasing; I don't think it has anything to do with genetics but I grew up watching my mom pick her nose. Thought it was disgusting, but guess what? I do it today (not out in public) and my grown daughter does it as well...I know, yuck. Sorry.

What is it with walking on toes? I find it quite fascinating that they actually come across it. I'm glad to know other people do it as well. With the dreaded nose picking, I think that runs in my immediate family as well. My partner is a driver who has a good rake, while I am sitting next to him complaining with embarrassment and my son, daughter and alas myself do it on the sly!!!LOL Thanks for your comments.

I can't think of too much except I have always sweated out of my nose. Like I'd have beads of sweat on my nose. Well when my son was born he did the same thing and my friend was freaking out she couldn't believe it. I inherited premature grey hair. I hate it but what can you do except call on Nice'n Easy. I can't think of anything else off hand.

Here is one for you. The ability to curl your tongue or fold it in half is inherited. I thought that was a funny one.

Many people in my mother's family, including my mother and my sisters, think with their tongue just protruding from the left side of their mouths. I think it was because this was noted at a young age, that I refused to do the same thing and broke myself of the habit. This isn't quite the same thing, but it is related. In a family I know, the son has never had contact with his father. The father was a very violent Spanish man who shouted a lot at his wife in Spanish. He left just before the son was born. The boy, from babyhood, would scream at the sound of foreign voices, even though he was a placid baby. This continued through his young life. Any foreign talking, especially male and most especially Spanish, would freak him out. The only time he had heard his father was before he was born.

That is really strange although I remember years ago when the programme Neighbours was really popular over here, alot of babies being born would become alert to the theme tune when it came on. Obviously this boy must have had it so ingrained into his brain before he was born, it has stayed with him. Poor thing!! Thanks, that was interesting!!

Funnily enough I used to walk around on my toes when I was a kid too, so I'm told - maybe I am related to you:-)) Only thing I can immediately think of is my total hatred of bananas, which is something shared by every single woman on my Mother's side of the family. I was first given something banana flavoured when I was a toddler, and far too young to understand about inherited traits, and I evidently screamed and threw it across the room, which is the same reaction as all my female cousins had at a similar age, and I still have a similar reaction to the nasty things today - LOL! OK - I don't throw tantruns now, but you know what I mean!

That is a strange one, especially for all the women to be like this! Thanks
