Judge orders O.J. Simpson to stop spending money | | Do you think this is fair? Will O.J. obey? How will anyone know if he is spendning money or not??LOS ANGELES - A state judge has ordered O.J. Simpson to stop spending money he received for his unpublished book, "If I Did It," about the slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Gerald Rosenberg's ruling on Wednesday extended a restraining order issued last month barring Simpson from spending any earnings from past deals, including books, films and sports memorabilia. The order, which was sought by Goldman's father, initially did not apply to the advance Simpson received from the book-and-TV deal for "If I Did It" because Fred Goldman had filed a federal lawsuit over the funds. However, the federal lawsuit was dismissed Jan. 24 by a judge in Los Angeles who said he had no jurisdiction over Simpson, who lives in Florida. The ruling is the latest in a decade-long battle following a 1997 civil judgment against Simpson that held him liable for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Fred Goldman alleges Simpson is trying to avoid paying the $33.5 million judgment, which has ballooned to about $40 million with interest. Simpson's book, which was spiked in November by the publisher, reportedly described how he theoretically would have killed Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Cook said the Goldman family remains concerned Simpson is shopping another book deal.

He should not spent the money, and he should start payments to Goldman. But I am happy with the fact that his book and his TV deal were cut off! He is trying to make money out of a crime! He should try and get a real job if what he needs is money to support his kids.

There's no reason why he should be able to get away with owing them that much money, and have nothing done about it. If he weren't famous, and he owed settlement money, the court would toss him in jail until he agreed to pay up, instead of just letting it drag on for years.

I don't get how you can just order someone to stop spending money that they are earning. And how could you justify not only telling him not to spend the money from the book, but from all past deals as well? It's his story he's trying to sell, so how can you justify stopping him?

I have no idea how they can keep tabs on what he spends from that unpublished book. I think the families should receive any money received for that book when published, not him.

Unfortunately, OJ's outlived 2 of his legal team and will probably outlive them all!
My personal theory is that OJ may not have been the person holding the knife, but he did orchestrate it. Death by knife is an extremely PERSONAL crime because the killer has to be right there in front of their victim. Unfortuntely, Ron Goldman was in the wrong place at the wrong time and therefore had to be eliminated as a possible witness. Of anyone living whose size and build somewhat matches him as well as have similar DNA, it would be his son from his first marriage. He overreacted during the reading of the verdict, whereas OJ visibly relaxed. But if the LAPD had thought about it, leather will shrink when introduced to ANY liquid, which is why the glove would not have fit OJ. Unfortunately, the LAPD bungled the case and now we have to endure this endless squabbling. OJ should consider writing his memoirs with the intention of paying for these judgements, rather than profit from the deaths.

smilekeith (143) | 3 years ago | While I think the evidence was botched in such a way that the jury made the ONLY FAIR DECISION possible, I think it is crazy to put someone else in the murder scene. I have to admit, I wasn't there, but I believe he was the perpertrator of the crime.
Due to the lack of UNTAINTED evidence, OJ is legally innocent. Hopefully, he will have to right to live like any other human being who is innocent. Assumptions should not be legal evidence and therefore, he should keep the money. However, If I ever had an ex girlfriend, fiance or even enemy killed brutally, I wouldn't not write a hypothetical book about how I killed her.... regardless how much money they paid. How do you measure the cost of pain.

I think the ruling is 100% right. If he DOES make any money, it should be given to the victim's families.

There's no IF in his "I did it." He did it! I think the fact that he's profiting from murder is conviction enough for me. He should be behind bars.

But the book should not of course affect the decision of the court which has the rules of court to follow. The book should be published and it's up to the people if they buy it. Da Vinci Code and other books taken from the Holy Bible which consist of blasphemies against God are allowed to be published and circulated. Simpson should also be given freedom to publish and circulate his book, spend his money as he wish, and let him pay his obligations to the government, people, and to all whom he is obliged to pay including support for his children. I really believe that he should not be stopped publishing and circulating his book.

scorpiobabes (1531) | 3 years ago | But Simpson has judgements that need to be honored...legal obligations! If he was anyone else, believe me, he'd be paying for them. Obviously a jury believed him to be responsible and awarded the Brown and Goldman families compensation.
In the end, all of the media outlets that were going to follow through with this got a lot of publicity (not necessarily good either). When the book and other appearances were canceled, the money should have theoretically gone back to the publisher; however, he had to use a ghostwriter (allegedly) and he was being paid to put his face and name on the book and to promote the appearances.
What makes his legal team's bills take a higher priority than a legal judgement? The decision of the court was that he was found guilty of the crime civilly and therefore is obligated to pay. He had to sell his home to pay his 'dream team'--why shouldn't any monies he would subsequently earn be paid to honor the obligations?
I'm not interested in making this a racial issue, but the fact is that he WAS found guilty in a civil court of law and all he's doing right now is teaching all four of his children how to sidestep the rules. THAT is the biggest crime of all.
