I love rats. I got my first one when i was 9.They are clean animals and are happy to see you when you get home. They want to be played with!I already wrote this whole thing out but it didn't post the first time for some reason. So again would you get a rat as a family pet?

I wouldn't mind so much, maybe a white or black and white one, not totally black though wouldn't want to mistaken it for a wild rat if it had to run away and I had to go looking for it lol. I think they are cute, but I don't think my parents or grand mother would agree on having it at home lol, I had lab mice once though and hamsters.

there are rats specially bred to have no tail. not cut off, but born missing the offencive tail and look a bit like the hamster. rats are also less inclined to have the hamster's attitude problem.

i don't have pets as i rarely have the time to devote. my sister had rats as pets all her life and her eldest daughter continues the tradition with her pet rat. yes, they are great pets and as 'caged' critters they often slip past the 'no pet' clauses set by landlords.

I woudln't buy a rat as a family pet now, because my cat might eat it. LOL I would not buy a rat, at this point in my life, for the same reason I wouldn't buy a bird of a guinea pig. I don't want it near my cat. If it wasn't for the cat though, I'd consider it. It's just another animals, and since it's in a cage in the house, I would be able to keep it clean, and there'd be no problem.
