I love stories that include psychic abilities, or magickal powers, but when those qualities aren't included in the story, I like suspense and or mysteries that show people surviving by being very smart or shrewd. I wonder what other avid readers enjoy, and how many share my preferences. Also, are the books you read similar to your favorite movies and tv shows?

I love Christian allegory and stories about someone dealing with their face and doing the Lord's work. An example of this would be Arena by Hancock (I think that's her name). Also, the Chronicles of Narnia would be an allegory. I also like stories about Joan of Arc, the Left Behind books, and novels about the early Chrisitan church.

I'm not a christian myself, but I reada book by CS Lewis called why I Am A Christian. It was beautiful, and while that is a path different from mine, it describes spirituality in the human experience so well, I cherished his work. So,I read the Chronicles of Narnia. which I thoroughly enjoyed. It opened me to fantasy supposedly for children, so I've read other books in that category. I have yet to see the Narnia movie(s?)- but I want to. I suspect when you said "dealing with their face"you meant fate?? I do it too, typo! augh!

Oh good, on other posts I'vereferred to Phil Rickman's books, which I think you would really like. The featured character is a devout CHristian and a natural medium, and a clergywoman. She's always seeking to know what the important issue is (to God) in her involvement in a mysterious situation. Lots of good eerie stuff in the novels, but the point of view is what holds my attention. Let me know what you think of all that- my attempt to describe a book is very good.

I love reading romance novels that are centered around the paranormal, magick, psychic abilities, curses, and mystical legends. I really don't like the vampire or the lycan books all that much. But I have read some that were very interesting. I am currently reading the "Dark" series by Christine Feehan. It is about vampires...but with a twist the vampires are the soulless creatures that have fallen to the darkness from the Carpathian species. The Carpathian male is a very dark individual and the female is the light. Together, they give balance. The male after so many thousands of years, looses his ability to feel emotions or see color. And only one true life mate can bring the emotions and color back into his life. If the male Carpathian does not find his true life mate before the darkness consumes him, he becomes a vampire feeding to feel the adrenaline of a kill...because that is all he can feel. Maggie Shayne is another good author or the paranormal romance. :) The Immortal High Witch is a good series. Other than that, I also like to read Dean Knootz. Not as freaky and scary as Stephen King...and Knootz is more the paranormal. :)

I will give Christine Feehan a try. and Maggie Shayne. I'll be at the library tomorrow and can look up an author you may enjoy. She writes about a woman who is having a love affair with a vampire, is surrounded by werewolves and vampires, etc, in the modern world, and she's comic but is teeling the story straight- a sort of occult Stephanie Plum. For dark and stormy night romance I like Phil Rickman's series on Merrily Watkins- I like it on many levels and really think you would too. Merrily is a natural medium, raising a daughter alone, a clergywoman who lives in a Welsh town where mysticism, the Old Ways and conservative modern events createa tug of war. Her lover is a former rock star who is making a comeback slowly from - well-if you give it a try I'd be interested in your comments. Thanks for the good lead here.

There are so many different kinds of novels that I like. I have gotten into paranormal stuff like vampires, gods/goddesses, dark warriors, dream warriors. A ot in the Dark Hunter series is what I like. I also read some of the classic novels and new age by Paolo Coelho. I pretty much just love to read anything I ca get my hands on.

I like a good who done-it-once in a while. I also like books about people overcome adversity with a lot of courage. I don't think that my taste in movies match my taste in books. They all keep changing. I do like a good mystry movie and I guess thats why I like most of the CSI series and Cold Case. I enjoy the way that the crimes are solved. James Mitchner is a favorite auther as is Leon Uris

I really like CSI, too. I have to say I 've had trouble getting into Mitchner's books. I remember being so profoundly affected by Leon Uris's Exodus. What a writer Good choices.

I love science fiction and time travel & psy are my fav topics. I discovered science fiction when Star Trek (classic) came on & I discovered what I was doing in my head had a name!! My fav tv show is Doctor Who. I do read other subjects, and like mysteries where you see the same people. I like the Hillerman Navaho mysteries, Lilian Jackson Braun's "Cat Who" books, and just anything by Janet Evonovich - both her Stephenie Plum books and her funny romances.

Yeah, the psycic stuff, sorry, letting the sf lingo get the better of me. Those of us active in fandom do have a specialized language. For psycic stuff you can call it psy or esper ablities. FTL = faster than light travel. A generation ship or sleeper ship for slower than light travel. AHhh, life is good.

Rosemary Edgehill wrote three novels featuring a witch (modern) who had a job in a large city (NY?) and attended annual gatherings of pagans and druids etc, and solved MYSTERIES- so of course I read them. Her fourth book was a collaboration with Andre Norton-the title is on the edge of my tongue (keyboard?)and it was really really good. So I wanted MORE. No more from Rosemary (sadly, sigh ) so I read Andre Norton. I almost became an SF fan. But never truly- time tracvel and magic were as much fantasy as I could manage- and as you demonstrated there'san entire lexicon of SF concepts and words that were just too difficult for me to navigate. I thank you for your good comments. And look forward to more, here-or there.

time travel is so provacative a subject. I kinda think we can do it,it feels like a real possiblility. sure is a fun theme. Peggy Sue got Married was a good one. By psy do you mean psychic stuff or psychology or psychos?? Or all of them? lol

I also love novels of mysteries and methaphysics, I think sometimes, hidding into a "fiction" tag or appearence, they reveal some inconvenient truths that are real but not welcome in realistic writings (such as news) so they are difficult to spread out otherwise.

I think that's a good observation- I always felt that in well written fiction there's a lot of truth.
