Alternatives for Chronic Pain  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 98/100. emeraldisle (8959)   ranked 2 out of 72 in chronic pain 5 years ago

I'm on the search for alternatives for Chronic Pain. I do not have insurance and very little money. I also have a lot of allergies that prohibit many over the counter medications. So I'm trying to find other ways to help with my chronic pain.

Right now I have injuries in my neck, upper back, lower back, hips, hands, shoulders..just about everywhere from my head on down to my hips. Thankfully normally my knees and such do not cause me a lot of pain. I also have degenerative disc and joint disease which just adds to it all.

So I'm looking for something that I can use to help with the pain. If anyone has any home remedies, herbs, right now if you told me standing on my head I'd probably try it but anyway if you know of something that works for you can you please share it?

I feel so sorry for you. It can be very difficult with no insurance. Have you tried a rice pack? It is easy to make and you heat it in the microwave or freeze it in the freezer. Take a tube sock and fill it about 1/2 to 3/4 full of rice Tie the end shut.
There are many ways to make them look nice. I think I did a discussion on them when I firt joined mylot. Anyway, if you need heat, put it in the microwave for about 2 minutes.

I have used hot and cold packs and they can work I agree. Never heard of a rice pack though. Will have to try that. I'm willing to try anything to be honest. The pain can get bad. Bengay helps with some but I get tired of being stinky as my neice calls it :)

The main thing that seems to help me is when I hurt so badly I just go get in the shower and let the hot water run on me
I want to get a better shower head
Ihave bought 2 thinking they would work better but guess I am not going to an expensive enough place LOL
I have a spa massager that goes in the bath tub I got it at a resale shop for 3.50
I used it for quite awhile but in the last year I am not feeling good about getting in and out of the tub by myself so now I don't use it.
Sometimes just drinking a hot cup of tea and sitting with my crafting (I cross stitch) will take me to a pleasant place cause I am not dwelling on the pain as much as I am working on my project of the moment
If you want add me to your friends list and we can talk anytime privately
Much love to you sweetie
I have cervical and spinal disenegration as well
as the Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Osteoarthritis, and I was told I had Rhuematoid arthritis but now they say I am a carrier of it...and I have asthma
So I have good days and bad days
Just depends on how active I am one day to the next

myLot reputation of 98/100. emeraldisle (8959)   ranked 2 out of 72 in chronic pain  5 years ago

sounds like you and I have a lot in common. The good days can be very good but oy the bad days are ones where I just want to curl up and make the world go away. Right now I'm using a heating pad. They can do wonders at times.

Hello, maries1952, please read my reply to this discussion and see for yourself first before saying no to what I have written there. Since we are on the same boat as regards this pain thing, I am sharing the way I have been coping these past few years with as many persons.

I wish it was legal because then I'd see about getting it. I've thought of trying Salvia but not sure where to buy it but also the cost. I don't earn that much money and so I have to find really cheap ways to make things work.

I myself suffer from pain everyday. My doctor told me one time to use magnets. For some reason this reduces pain. I have no idea how but he says it does work. I myself thought he might of been smoking his own.

Heheh oh there are a few I thought were smoking some home grown. Glad I'm not the only one to have dealt with similar.

I use epsom salts. Here is what Wiki has to say abou their use with pain: "Epsom salts are also available in a gel form for topical application in treating aches and pains. Intravenous use is broadening, as magnesium sulfate reduces striated muscle contractions and blocks peripheral neuromuscular transmission by reducing acetylcholine release at the myoneural junction, as well as other effects."

myLot reputation of 98/100. emeraldisle (8959)   ranked 2 out of 72 in chronic pain  5 years ago

Thanks :) I wish I could use that though. I'm allergic to sulfates so have to be careful what I'm exposed to but for others I bet it would work great for them. For those I'm really glad you posted. Hopefully they will get some relief.

i am very sorry i will not recomeend you to stand on your head when you still can get relief from all pain.first of understand what is a disease .believe me all diseases are not your enemies all diseases are natures way return to health, for eg:if you take castore oil you will have faster bowel means to expel the castor oil which is a toxin to the body the body will try to remove it as fast as possible in this eg it expels through the diarrhea.like that pain in joints means there are toxind in the joints and the air in your joints is not been able ot move freely ,these theories may bore you.
but try this change your diet ,have diet only 3 times a day eat leafy vegetables and raw vegetables ,if possible try to live on fruits of 2 weeks ,(dont mix sour fruits with sweet fruits )this will defenitely take care of your problem.
or if cant change diet try to learn yoga pranayama
vist www.divyayoga.com .watch t.v programmes listed inthat site. do if for one hour .100%cure guarentee with in one month, may be two month
learn naturopathy ,self heal ,be your own doctor ,be proud of yourself,
visit websites on nautropathy www.drbass.com etc
try fasting
now stand in your head

myLot reputation of 98/100. emeraldisle (8959)   ranked 2 out of 72 in chronic pain  5 years ago

Heheh I think I'll wait to stand on my head. Not sure I'll ever be able to do that :) I'll look into the yoga can't hurt to try that one.

Boy, do I understand!
I have Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and stage 1 H.S. I have gone the past four years without insurance so that we could afford to keep the kids on insurance. Sucks, but such is life.
Since we have moved I have demanded that my husband and I get insurance. It has to be a priority now. Without good health we are pretty much useless.
The rice bag DOES work! It's one of my favorite things. If you microwave it for a minute it will hold moist heat for about 45 minutes. I haven't tried freezing it, but I think I'll go ahead and try it. (My kids steal my rice bags all the time. It keeps the feet warm on cool nights!)
I also take 1 teaspoon of Extra Virgin olive oil everyday. It taste like crap, but it does lubricate the joints and has anti-oxidents that we could all use. It's cheaper than Glucosamine and Chondroitin and works just as well.
Also, every state has a program for people who do not have medical insurance and do not qualify for state insurance. I don't know what it would be called in Florida, but it's easy to look up.
Drug companies are also helping to pay for medications when you can't afford them. There are some really good programs. Each drug company has their own, so it's a bit of research there too but well worth it.
Home remedies only go so far when it comes to chronic pain. See if you can find a doctor who will let you pay out the bill.
The kind of pain you are in is going to require a doctors help, I'm afraid. You're going to have to make it a priority.
Mom is always last when it comes to just about everything. We put ourselves in this position because we think "The kids need shoes, so I'll wait" or "My husband really needs this, so I'll wait".
Then we wait until we can't function and everything around us falls apart until we have a "good" day and put it back together again.
Make it a priority so YOU don't fall apart. Your' family and your' friends here at Mylot don't like the idea of you being in pain!
If you need me, I'm here.

myLot reputation of 98/100. emeraldisle (8959)   ranked 2 out of 72 in chronic pain  5 years ago

The only Florida one I know of is for kids only and not for adults. There is medicaide but I have to apply for social security first and then hope I qualify. It's a mess and of course since I haven't had insurance almost all of my records are ancient so social security is going to be a big uphill battle, not that it wouldn't anyways.

I hadn't heard of the Extra Virgin Oil for it. I can't take things like Glucosamine due to being allergic to Iodine. Right now since I was in the hospital (yeah had to do that due to bronchitis and they will bill me oy) I have some meds to help for awhile. At least for the month. I'm hording them too and only using when absolutly neccessary. So gives me time to try and get everything else in order and maybe get medicaid.

I'm none too thrilled with medications of any kind myself...for a good long time, I've been suffereing from a lot of joint pain just about everywhere--my feet, ankles, wrists, joints, on and on and at times honestly I feel like a decrepit old lady--LOL--I've been reading up on that Glucosamine/ Chondroitin/MSM combo, plus the benefits of Omega 3 and fish oils...so giving it a go...it says it takes a good month to really kick in for benefits, and I've only been taking it for about a week, but I swear I feel a tad better..can actually walk now...yes that's how bad I've been. A lot of pain...as for pain itself...I usually just rely on good ole aspirin. As for standing on your head...mmm....could work...that is one of the Yoga postures you know--LOL

myLot reputation of 98/100. emeraldisle (8959)   ranked 2 out of 72 in chronic pain  5 years ago

Believe me I do understand the feeling of being a decrepit old lady. I'm 38 and I've been told my back is what most expect in an 80 year old or older woman. I wish I could take the Glucosamine and many of the others but they have Iodine in them which I'm allergic to. That's what makes it so rough for me to find anything that works. I'm glad to hear though it's working for you. I know for some it does.

Hey at this point I'm willing to try the rack. Actually I think that might feel a good in some ways :)

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)   ranked 8 out of 72 in chronic pain  5 years ago

Oh yes I'm a decrepit ole lady--I've been going to a foot doctor for awhile npw--he's says I have a lot of trauma to my feet..that it's a wonder I can walk--and I absolutely hate that since I love to walk..but there HAVE been days I can hardly walk

myLot reputation of 98/100. emeraldisle (8959)   ranked 2 out of 72 in chronic pain  5 years ago

Isn't it miserable to feel far older then our years? I could understand it if I'd led a life full of danger and such, you know where I put my body through a lot of trauma, but I've led a fairly boring life. It's very irritating when I should be able to do a lot more.

Hi I suffer from chronic pain too unfortunately I am not as brave as you and take over the counter medicines, but some alternatives I would recommend is aromatherapy (lavender is good as a relaxant) Reflexology and any natural tablet for relaxing the muscles. Deep heat is good as well as is tense machines and might be worth investing in.

myLot reputation of 98/100. emeraldisle (8959)   ranked 2 out of 72 in chronic pain  5 years ago

Oh trust me I do take medication when I can I just have to becareful on what I take. I'm brave but I'm not that brave.

I use BenGay a lot. He's my best budy and I go to bed with him and wake up with him all the time :) It does work with a lot though. Deep Heat is also good and so is Icy hot. I've alternated between them but I usually end up back with Bengay (or the generic of it anyways)

Actually, calcium and magnesium and flaxseed oil have been helping me quite a bit lately. It may also help you to take glucosamine and chondroitin if you're not taking it already. The magnesium helps especially with nerve pain.

myLot reputation of 98/100. emeraldisle (8959)   ranked 2 out of 72 in chronic pain  5 years ago

I'll check into those. I can't take glucosamine due to allergies but will check to see if I can take chondroitin and hte others.
