Hi! Well, I got up this morning to find that the guppy I thought might have been pregnant isn't pregnant. It died overnight. Bummer! That makes four fish I've lost in the last week - 2 guppies, 1 clown loach, and 1 jellybean. I'm bummed! :-(

What are you doing for your fish? With the bloating, you could have a case of dropsy. We had a fish die off not that long ago. We never did figure out exactly what caused it. At the time the water coming out of the tap quality had dropped and we contributed that to the issue. We did have to do weekly water changes and change our filters twice a month. That seemed to fix the problem because the fish stopped dying.

With cleaning your tank that often you may be setting yourself up for a problem. Over cleaning the tank can throw off the biological filter as much as under cleaning it can. Have you check the PH and all that jazz lately? Even with new fish, normally if you get them and they are sick they die within a few days, not a few weeks.

Hi! I don't think I'm overcleaning it. I always mean to do a water change and vacuum the gravel sooner than I actually do! LOL I should check the ph, that's a good idea. Thanks! :-)

Guppies are just hit and miss in my opinion. They're so overbred, and usually way overcrowded at the fish stores. The loaches, I think I mentioned once before, they can be kinda sensitive to water quality, especially being scaleless fish. Could be a bad batch, most places get their fish from the same local breeders. Or, they may just not like the type of water you guys have their. I have a problem with keeping snails where I'm at. As for the jellybeans, they're usually pretty hearty fish, like most cichlids with the exception of German Rams. You said their tails were getting distoreted? Did they have other symptoms? There's several things, like a simple vitamin deficiency(be sure you vary the fish's diet), electric currents in the tank, neon tetra disease, false neon tetra disease, and even fish tuberculosis can cause the spines to become deformed, usually because the muscles are damaged.

Hi! Thanks for the response. My tequila sunrise guppies are doing great. They're playing like normal today. I think you're right, it's sort of a crap shoot to see if you ultimately got healthy fish or not. I've had the jellybeans since October, so I wouldn't suspect any diseases. The blood parrots and angelfish that are in the same tank are just fine. Basically, it just stopped swimming around and hid. Other than the tail distortion, it looked fine. To console myself, I just bought four neon tetras. :-) The store has had them for a while and the owners were really confident they are healthy! :-) They are acclimating to my 10 gallon tank now. I'm really hooked, I lose a fish, I have to go out and get a new one to replace it! LOL

Being as how you use well water I would test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and the pH because there may be things in the water from farms or factories near by that will affect your fish. If you do not drink the water why do you think that your fish should live in it all the time? Maybe you could get a whole house filter to get rid of impurities in the water so that the water will be better for your fish. Just a few thoughts and hopefully you will be able to avoid any more deaths in your tanks.
