Long hair email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. Trace86 (3407)3 years ago

I have almost shoulder length layered hair and I am starting to get very frustrated. It is getting so tangly and snarly. I just don't understand. My hairstylist says that's normal. My friends at work with long hair say they have the same problem.
There is a large knot underneath that I just couldn't get out. Yesterday I cried while trying to detangle. I have tried every detangler known to man.
If bad tangles are normal for long hair, why does anyone bother?
Is there something I could do or put on my hair that would work? Not another detangler. Is there a leave-in that I could use in the shower that would minimize this problem?
I am so close to just cutting it all off.

I have long hair, about down to the middle of my back. I braid it at night to keep it from getting tangled (or wrapping around my neck!) while I sleep. If I'm wearing my hair down, I try to brush it a couple of times during the day to keep ahead of the tangles. I also don't use a comb, I use only a soft bristle brush on my hair. I start brushing near the bottom to work the tangles out gradually. This makes it easier to get them out and doesn't pull as painfully. I don't use detangler at all, just conditioner and Garnier Sleek and Straight serum on my wet hair. I do have very straight hair, though, which probably helps keep it form tangling too.
Hope this help you out some.

I have long hair that snarls easy. It's baby fine and I have a ton of it, always have. I use conditionar after I wash it, that does help although some conditioners are better then others. Now for a leave in Infusium is very good and I have used that. So is The Conditioner by Paul Mitchel and Nexxus by humectres, both can be bery good but expensive. There are a couple of generics of it though so that might help.

I also use a brush, not a comb. I use a vent brush to get the snarls out. I find a bristle brush won't penetrate and then I end up with the knots underneath.

Don't cut it off! Have you tried leave in conditioners? Joslyn has the same problem and I get them too. I think it is just the pain of having long hair. Don't give up there has to be something that works. You might also want to ask Miki considering she works with hair products.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Trace86 (3407)  3 years ago

Mik's girls have serious snarl issues too. I used to have a great leave-in but can't find it anymore. I need to find a new one that works well and doesn't make my hair look greasy and dirty.
I tried something different today. I combed my hair in the shower and detangled before rinsing out the conditioner. It's not dry yet, but seems less tangled than normal.

Roland my friend, you have no idea how I looked with short hair.
My mom forced me to have super short hair for the longest time and let my sister have long hair.
I hated looking like a boy. I have wanted long hair forever!
I am going to give myself a deadline. I will find something that helps my hair by the end of the summer or I will cut it off.

When my hair was almost down to my waist I used to use that children's brand "No more tangles." That worked excellent! Now my hair's only to the bottom of my shoulder blades and I still have the same problem, just not as bad. I bought one of those hair picks. They're like a comb and have wide teeth with gaps between and gently tease the knot out. It's hard, I know:-)

A good conditioner or reconstructer should help. You can also us e a shining serum. When detangling you hair you should always start at the bottom and work up. Is your hair layered? If not getting some long layers may help also.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Trace86 (3407)  3 years ago

I have long layers in my hair, but it still doesn't seem like enough. I may opt for some more layers, since the topmost layer seems too heavy. Or I could just toss it into a ponytail and keep it there until it is really long and then find a real style.

My daughter has hair down to her bum, so I feel your pain, I am the one who has to brush her hair after a shower and such. I always braid her hair so it is easy to do in the morning though. Forget the commercial detanglers and the leave ins, make your own, get a spray bottle put a little bit of regular conditioner in it then fill the bottle up with water shake and apply.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Trace86 (3407)  3 years ago

Any recommendation on how much conditioner to use? Like an inch in the bottom and then water? Or less? Will this work much better than the detanglers?

myLot reputation of 91/100. Myrrdin (1641)  3 years ago

Well I would start out with very little, even less then an inch, depending on the size of the bottle. But yes it works MUCH better then commercial detanglers. And it is cheaper too LOL.

Oh, do NOT cut your hair just yet! You'll find something to help, I"m sure.:)

I have hair past my shoulders as well, and have almost always had long hair.. so I understand the problems associated with it.:)

This might sound odd, but do you think that something in your wardrobe is causing the tangling? I know for myself, in the winter, I have a lot of problems with those big knots at the top of my neck. I notice that when I wear a certain headband/earcover thingy it gets really bad... and sometimes with a specific turtle neck I wear as well.

I also make sure I brush my hair fully a few times each day... especially just before going to bed at night. Yes, conditioners help too, a lot. My hairdresser introduced me to a Joico product called "integrity"... it's AMAZING! It doesn't weigh down my hair, and a little goes a long way. I'd suggest using something like that, and concentrating on the back of your neck... flip upside down and get it under there... not just on the top.

Good luck.. I hope you find something that works well for you.:)

myLot reputation of 99/100. Trace86 (3407)  3 years ago

Thanks for the suggestion. I will google that product and try it.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Hmmmmm (1687)  3 years ago

QueenKaren, your point about the clothing isn't odd at all. I have two turtleneck sweaters with stiffer necks that make my hair tangle so uncontrollably that I end up pulling out a good chunk every time I attempt to de-snarl it - to the point where I was surprised I still had hair back there. I realized this was my problem so I always wear my hair up when I wear those sweaters.

I use Aussie 3 minute conditioner. It's not a leave in, but you leave it on for 3 or more minutes after you shampoo your hair. Use their shampoo too. Otherwise, have your hairstylist recommend something. They usually know. Most of the leave in conditioners will leave your hair looking greasy. Don't cut it! One thing I do is always start at the ends of my hair when I brush it, and work my way up. Just something I remembered from cosmetology. That way it's less painful, and less damaging to your hair, when you brush it. I use a finishing shine spray also, which is very light. This helps tame the hair.

I get such bad snarls underneath by mid-day. It is so frustrating.
