I use this one at Christmas alot, because it's the right colors for that season. But, it's great any other time too. Take a quart jar. On the bottom, put 3/4 cup of small dried red beans. Next is 3/4 cup dried white navy beans, and then on top of that 3/4 cup dried split peas. The last step is the seasoning. I use: 2 tablespoons of dried minced onion or onion flakes, 2 tablespoons of beef boulion powder, 1 tablespoon of garlic powder, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. black pepper, 1 tsp. paprika, 1 tsp. chili powder. The instructions are to empty the soup mix into a pot with 3 quarts of water and cook on low heat until beans are soft, about 2 hours. This makes a great 3-bean soup. Hint: You can also advise them to add a pound of ground beef, and it makes a wonderful chili!

I love making gifts ina jar. I do them all the time. I make them as gifts and for my own pantry. Thanks for the wonderful recipe. We dont purchase commercial mixes so I make all my own. We dont eat MSG or preservatives. The only way to avoid them is to make mixes yourself. Thanks again.

What a neat idea. I love making bean soups at home. I never thought of giving it this way as a christmas gift. Although I'd suggest bacon rather than ground beef. I love bacon and bean soup. These wouldn't be too expensive to put together either. I like it. Thanks for the information carpenter.

I too love bacon..in any way, shape, form or fashion. Have you ever had bacon wrapped green beans? I had some at a party this week. They are an appetizer. I'd love to have the recipe for them.

I don't cook them much in the summer. I try to use them in things, because they are good for you.
