Starting seeds  email this discussion to a friend?

I'm so excited! I just started my vegetable garden. DH thinks I'm nuts, because the only decent window with enough light is the south window in our bedroom. So, now I have tomatoes (Yellow and red plum, bell peppers, onion seeds, egg plant, and spinach. They are all resting on a table in our bedroom happily. I am hoping that this year will be successful. I usually don't have luck starting seeds indoors. I invested some money in one of those Burpee starter kits, (with the self-watering mat, since that is usually my problem!) and am hoping for the best. Wish me luck!!
Yes, I know spinach doesn't take that long to grow, but if I start them now, I can transplant to a larger pot and have fresh spinach a little earlier. We love those fresh greens!!

Check out the wintersowing forum at www.gardenweb.com It makes it really easy to start seeds outside, no hardening off which is where most people fail. It's a cheap and easy way to get some plants.

Thank you for the link. Any little help I can get to keep these little buggers alive will be helpful. :) When the snow finally melts, I do plan on having DH make me a hothouse so we can start carrots, radishes, and the salad greens a little early. We've done that in the past with success.

Wow! I'm impressed! You sound like you are off to a great start! (I'm proud of you!:) I'll send the "garden fairy" your way OK? I can just picture that, but you're doing better than me so far! GOOD LUCK!

I'm hoping she hangs around a bit. I always seem to overwater my little seedlings and then they die. :( Fortunately, I have a MIL that always plants extra, and gives me what she does need. I'm hoping that isn't the case this year.
I had so much fun canning last summer (first time ever!) that I'm hoping for a big crop of tomatoes. My salsa didn't seem to last very long, even though I made 12 pints! (DH eats like water!)

You are an inspiration to me! I have just cleared off a large windowsill so I can start some seedlings too. I don't have much garden space but I think I may do a container garden this year just for fun. I have a large sunporch in the upstairs of my house that might just make an excellent greenhouse this summer. Good luck with your seedlings and send the garden fairy my way if she gets time.

I can really relate with you! I've been doing vegetable & flower container gardening for almost four years now and I still get excited every time I see a seed sprout! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that you'll have great year of gardening. It's really a joy and a sort of therapy to just plant the seeds and water them. And harvesting! That is just incomparable! Having a taste of your homegrown vegetables is just awesome!

I agree! Home grown is so much better than store bought. I just like the miracle of things watching something so tiny produce so much fruit!!! (The mighty oak from a tiny acron!) I've checked several times today, but no sprouts yet. Hey, I guess it hasn't been evern 24 hours yet. LOL!

Sometimes I do get a bit impatient to see the seeds start to sprout. Although, somehow, most of the time, they sprout a few days (sometimes weeks) earlier than what is stated on the package. That's really good for me! Fatse harvest time!
