Jonestown, Heaven's Gate, The Order of the Solar Temple, Charles Manson Family, Branch Davidians adn the list just goes on....How is it that so many ppl get caught up in the lies that Cult leaders spew? Jonestown is the one that really stands out since over 900 ppl died in that mass suicide including Jones himself...We were watchign a documentary on Jonestown last night (LOL after the secret society doc) and I said to my husband, "how desperate would one have to be to fall for that?!" and he replied with, "I guess everyone needs to believe in something"....but I mean to this scale? Jim Jones moved his "ppl" to the jungles of South freakn America for crying out loud! What would possess them to go? They gave up everything for that man who was NOT right in the head and obviously so...which came out towards the end, however he wouldnt let ppl leave at that point..How could one not stop and think of that being a possiblity though?? I dont get it...
any thoughts on the topic?

I agree with your husband. Sometimes people are so desperate to belong to a group and needing to believe in something that they somehow get sucked into these occults. Sadly, they are not healthy. I wish they were discovered and exposed before it got to that point...but sadly, they still exist.
My question is...What makes a person create these occults?
Do they have a gift of persuasion? What is so special about the leader of these occults that makes those begin to follow them?

I think part of it is that our society is so fragmented that people don't have a sense of belonging any more. Another part is that our society presents the wrong kind of challenges. People crave having to do for themselves what technology and money does for them. Consider the uprise of crafting and "homesteading" to see that people need hands on living.
Couple that with the failure of the organized church to meet the real needs of the people and you have a people searching for something they can throw their heart and soul into. People like Jim Jones find a ready following when they present strong beliefs and a community of like minded others.

First off I want to say that it really upsets me that this type of thing even happens. I know this. A dear friend of mine's family was in a cult when she was born. They raised her up and she went through a great deal of torture. Now to say that she believed that crap is another thing. She didn't and doesn't. She is away from her family because of all the stuff that they put her through. My heart goes out to her for all that she has had to go through. She now is alone and without family all in the sake of being sane and being safe away from this total craziness. There is a great deal of brainwashing that goes into getting people to believe the stuff that they toss out. You really don't know a lot about how the brain works and such unless you have experienced things like this. Just think of the little kids like my friend who is being taught that this stuff is right and that they deserve whatever is being done to them. Sure there are a great deal of cults and they all do their own thing. I know that my friend was abused and tortured more than I think anyone will ever know. She has more strength and courage than anyone I know. Don't judge people until you know the whole facts and truth about the case. Some of these people could of easily been brainwashed and gone through the same things my dear friend did. I know my friend was born into this type of thing and now lives free of it. There is a lot of hate and abuse in this world. Some people might feel that there is no other way out of it. I don't know the whole picture and never will with all these different cults. Some are less violent than others. I'm not saying that it makes it right. I am really upset and I should end my ramblings of this. All I can think about is my dear friend who has suffered so much in her life and still suffers to this day due to what her family has put her through. It isn't right that parents do this to their children. It isn't right that anyone does this to anyone else. Just total injustice. That is my words for now.

LooneyToons, you said everything I would have said and probably much better than I ever could have said it. I also have a very dear friend (for almost 3 years now) who was born into and raised in a cult. My heart goes out to her the more that I learn about what she had to endure most of her life. How parents and "friends" could do such horrible things to their children or anyone else, I will never be able to understand. I know what I'd like to do to any of her family that is still alive, but they'll get their "reward" one day...in Hell!

Thank you so much Claudia. My heart is breaking for her more and more as I think about this. Trust me I wanted to say more words than I did and things that probably would of gotten me kicked of off mylot. I try to bite my tounge and not say things that would get me into trouble. Sometimes it is very difficult. This is such a touchy subject and will be hard for many I suppose.

Your husband is right. People are trying to find the true religion which they can hold on to. We always tend to find the truth. And once we find one religious cult which seems to appeal to us very much, we tend to hold on to it for good.
I really don't know either why so many cannot see the folly of a cult. And they go all the way with their leader even if it calls for them to end their life with him.
Duly registered religion sects do not practice what the cults do. However, it is highly noticeable that members of religious cults are so brainwashed that they are very hard to dissuade from it. There are a lot of religious cults in my country, too. I have talked to some members and tried to point out to them that their leader is not really showing them the whole true picture. Yet, they are very difficult to shake. They have received all sorts of favors, promises and had seen their leader perform 'miracles' of sorts. All these have convinced them to the bone.

I just replied to a discussion that you left on one of mine that I enjoyed very much. This is just my opinion and I could be wrong. To me some of these cult leaders pry on the lonely and the people like to lable as rejects. The ones that just want to fit in somewhere. They will do anything just to be accepted. It is sad for these people and I feel so sorry for them. If this world would just accept people for who they are, what color they are, how they act, etc. there would not be no Jim Jones. I watched the same show.

I've got to admit that I can't really explain it mainly because I am not one of those people that would get caught up in a cult. But saying that I guess the time a cult gets hold of you, you are at your lowest and most desperate or indeed are just searching for 'something' that you can not find anywhere else. It is a form of brainwashing, it has to be despite what they may say to the contrary, it's starts off in such a subtle way that people don't realise it's happening. They then get so caught up in it all that they don't even realise when things are getting bad. The leaders are always such mesmorising characters they have such an influence over others, and that's when they can get the followers to do whatever they are told. The saddest thing of all, I think, is when children are involved because they are the innocents and should not be involved in these things but I guess it's either that or take them from their parents but realistically we all know that wouldn't happen and so it goes on. There have always been cults and there always will be, because there are always people looking for something, some answer or whatever, and some people are never satisfied with what they've got, they have to search for more.

Gullibility and ignorance are the reasons that i believe when people believe such fancy cults. The leaders were very influential but never productive.
