My son just called me to tell me that he volunteered to take an iguana home and take care of it during Spring Break. Ummm...yeah, I know nothing about iguanas. ha ha So, I sure hope he knows all he needs to take care of this animal. And I sure hope it is not too big!!! So, if anyone has any words of advice, it is welcome. Otherwise, I am going to have to do some searching and reading when I get back from taking my little Lilly to the vet's office for her shots and check up.

Iguana's are usually pretty even tempered. They like certain kinds of food, but you'll want him to make sure and find out what he's been receiving already as you don't want to mess up his diet. if he's coming with an aquarium make sure he's got a heated rock or a heat lamp, and a large bowl (large for an aquarium) of water. that's about it. LOL don't let the dogs eat him, and don't pull on his tail, and you should be alright!

OK, don't pull on tail. Got it. LOL :) And I am not letting the dogs anywhere near it! LOL Bailey is already sitting in front of the cage for hours staring and periodically barking. It is really funny!

When my wife was little, her brother had gotten a Skink lizard. and her brother one day told her she could pick it up but only if she picked it up by the tail. well, she picked it up by the tail, the tail came off, and kept wiggling, and she started screaming. LOL it's funny now but i think she was seriously traumatized at the time. LOL so how's the spring break with the iguana going?

I used to have an iguana and the main thing is to make sure you keep him warm enough (ie the hot rock stays plugged in, or pig blanket, or whatever the heat source is). Ih he isn't warm enough, he won't be able to digest his food. Unless it gets away from you, it should survive anything else over that short period of time. Good luck and have fun!

Yeah, the cage has turned into a nice night light that brightens the entire down stairs area. LOL Definitely no bumping into the couch down there in the middle of the night. ha ha

Iguanas are very cute and would love to have one as a pet. I am sure that your son has information on him on how to take care of the iguana. I can not imagine anyone giving a person a creature like that without giving them on what to feed it and other necessities for its survival. You should probably do some research as well, just in case. :-) Enjoy your new friend. :-)

My daughter had one. It was interesting. It would bite, and it was a loner. Nice looking though. It liked greens, like alfalfa and collards. Check with the vet to make sure of a complete diet of yes and no's. They also like warmth, so the cage will need an ultrviolet light. Good luck dear. Hope y'all enjoy it. What's it's name?

I don't know its name...my son just keeps calling it The Iguana. LOL I thought about that today when he was at school and the little thing was walking around its cage....that I didn't know what to call it. :) But now that it has bitten my daughter...its name is now, Don't Touch. LOL

I see you already have some good ideas but I have to add my comments. I had an iguana once. He was a lot of work but I really liked having him around. We fed him escarole, mustard greens, and other things that for some reason I am drawing a blank on. I knew before I started typing.lol. And we gave him bananas and apples cut up. Not a lot of fruit. We used it as a treat. Also, we got a spray bottle and filled it with warm water. We sprayed him once in awhile. He loved it. If I can be of further help, let me know. But I will ask my boyfriend as he was the one that did all the research on it.

www.iguana-news.com This might help you. I would love to have an iguana for a time. Might prove interesting with a new pup. I think that warmth is key with those guys. Well, hope the veterinarian trip goes smoothly and the iguana survives your busy household! lol

good luck with your research. I know nothing about iguanas either. Thanks for giving me a heads up though about animal volunteerism. I hope neither of my daughters do that to me!

Haha. Aren't kids great offering our homes for the class pets all the time? Thank goodness our class pets are usually a budgerigar so they aren't too hard to get along with. Hope it all goes well.

That sounds like a whole lot of FUN! I've never had any real contact with one but it seems they'd be fairly easy I guess to take care of. Good luck and have fun with your new foster pet :)

Isn't it so nice when our kids volunteer us for something? Personally I'd call the teacher and double check with her/him on what special care the iguana needs. That way if you are following the teacher's instructions and something should go wrong you can blame it on them. Besides the teacher should know specifically what the iguana needs and should supply any food and other supplies for you. You just need to know what to do with it all.

Ohh myy .. don't they need lots of specialist attention and equipment .. and don't they carry salmonella .. ?? Not sure I would want to try and look after a reptile ... I think I'd have to pass if it were me and suggest he brought home something a little warmer and furrier ...

Oh my. I'm glad its you and not me! I would be a nervous wreck! I looked at the picture of the iguana ...it is very stately looking! I would be so afraid that it would die while in my care! Do you have other pets? We have a dog and a cat who would likely claw at the cage continuously too! I learned a lot about iguanas from reading zukeper's comments. Thanks ladies!

You're a brave woman,LOL! My daughter loves things like that. Last year we had to keep 2 salamanders she found in a little fish tank. 2 turned into 8 and she wanted to keep them in her room. I told her that the garage was as close to being in the house as they were gonna get,LOL!

Iguanas can make great pets, I'm lucky, I have a very friendly and social one. I usually pet it once or twice a day, so it's used to human contact. Here's my advice: 1. Make sure that you wash your hands. You can get a nasty stomach bacteria from the iguana, but otherwise, it's generally safe. 2. Make sure the iguana has a cold spot and a hot spot. People always worry about the iguana being too cold, but really it needs a place to chill out. If you can, make a little iguana hutch, where the iggy can hide and chill out. 3. If the iguana escapes and hides, PLACE A BLACK T-SHIRT OVER ITS HEAD BEFORE YOU PICK IT UP. Iguanas are a bit like birds, they will be calmer in a dark enviroment. I've had a couple of times where the iggy crawled under a table and he freaked out when I tried to pick him up. They can lose their tails if they are afraid, and that's just messy. Hope this helps and thanks for being a friend to reptiles. Sumi --- Build A PC From Scratch http://www.helium.com/tm/325308
