Every day common items usually have come about by accident (such as rubber) or after many tries and failures (such as the lightbulb) but stories of inventions are facinating...
Such as the one about the invention of velcro...the man that invented it had noticed how a certain plant stuck to the fur of his dog and wondered if he could make such a product...
Or the inventors of the Canadian game, Trivial Pursuit...their first copy of the game was a failure...the second time, they succeeded and the rest is history...
anyone else have some interesting invention stories?

The invention of the ice cream cone. No one really thinks about that one. But the guy who invented it had a waffle booth at the St Louis world fair. It just happened to be located next to the ice cream booth. So he rolled up a waffle and plopped some ice cream in it. Imagine if his waffle booth was located next to the stir fryed veggie booth instead?

I read a story once about Alexander Fleming who invented penicillin more or lesss by accident when some mold turned up in his laboratory.
After the invention of penicllin, when he was knighted and world famous, he was taken on a tour of a brand new state of the art laboratory. His host turned to him and said: Just think, Sir Aleexander, what wonderful things you could have invented in a lab like this one". Fleming looked at the man and replied: "Certainly not penicillin".

Thanks for the info. It's been a long time since I read that one so the mistake in the telling was probably mine. For some reason I think I read it in Readers Digest.

I just saw a commercial this weekend that reminded me of this topic. If was about the invention of gatorade. So i went to the website to look it up and here is what i found. the abbreviated version.
In early summer of 1965, a University of Florida assistant coach sat down with a team of university physicians and asked them to determine why so many of his players were being affected by heat and heat related illnesses.
The researchers soon discovered two key factors that were causing the Gator players to ‘wilt’: the fluids and electrolytes the players lost through sweat were not being replaced, and the large amounts of carbohydrates the players’ bodies used for energy were not being replenished.
The researchers then took their findings into the lab, and formulated a new beverage that would adequately replace the key components lost by Gator players. They called their concoction ‘Gatorade’.
Since the University of Florida is known as the Gators, this drink became the "gator's aide"
