I don't know about a fashion accessory but they can be jolly useful.
We had a queen in our company and he was unbelieveable in a bar room fight - the sort of happy passtime soldiers have on a night off. He would fight like a woman but with the strength of a man!! So he was a friend to us - at least at arms length in the showers!! haha

This very much reminds me of something from the 1960's when the phrase,"Some of my best friends are Negroes." was a cliche one heard all the time.
Just as this phrase from the 60's was uttered to convince others one was not a racist, I suspect having a gay best friend is mostly to convince others one is not a homophobe.
Funny how things change, yet stay the same.

I have a best friend who happens to be gay, the reason I put it that way is that he is my friend first and foremost.
We met and became frinds when we started primary school (aged 5) and 30 years later we are still friends, so him being gay has nothing whatsoever to do with us being friends but I do know what you mean, over the years I/we have come across quite a few people that only seem to want to be friends with someone because they are gay.
I think he would actually fall about laughing at the thought of being classed as a fashion accessory.
