Car alarms are noise pollution

I am incensed by car alarms that go off because someone breathes near the car all day and night. Lets have a law that if someone's car alarm is going off for no reason it is permissible to to take whatever action is necessary to stop the alarm.

We have laws regarding noise pollution here, but whether or not car alarms are covered, I couldn't tell you. Now days, apart from annoying the crap out of us, I don't think people even care if the car alarm is going off for no reason or if the damn thing is being pinched. Usually if I hear a car alarm going off, I don't go racing out for a look to see what's going on, I just shake my head and think 'another flamin' alarm'. And yeah, if the alarm is going all the time, there should be something you're allowed to do with it.

While I fully understand your frustration, as I hate these alarms myself I don't think I would go as far as wanting a law that will allow anyone to do anything in order to stop the alarm and here is why:
Say you just bought the car of your dreams and you are at a party/movie/opera, in a place where you cannot hear it going off and it does, for no real reason, like someone was admiring it too close, and then that someone, who is aware of the law breaks in to stop the alarm...and drives away with it or worse, leaves you a wreck!!!

If you couldn't hear the alarm then it served no warning purpose, the only function therefore of you leaving it on was to annoy people. Put another way, if you choose to leave your alarm on then you accept that you must make yourself available to check it and respond to it. Yes, you might argue you have the right not to have your car damaged but I think my right not to have my peace and quiet damaged is greater.

I beleive a car alarm is intended to scare away the intruder as well as attract the attention of anyone around - now, in countries where you have easily accesible parking facilities that are guarded is okay not to use one but in places where there is no proper parking (have to park on the road) and the chances of your car being vandalized exist, I feel you should be allowed to use a car alarm. Just my opinion :)...

Go for it, Urban! Try to get that law passed here, too. I hate car alarms. They're so annoying.

oh...the problem is...how do you know if a car alarm is going off without any reason? Unless you were there when it started, you cannot say it....however, i don't think that alarms are very good at keeping thieves away..maybe be they are useful only where little thieves are concerned, not the smartest ones...alarms that blocks the wheels or the fuel, I think these are far more useful...and they keep us from going crazy because of all the noise!!!

It's hard to be real but, good idea that you're talking about.
It makes me going crazy specially I perfer calm most of the time.
Let's say start by yourself and make control on your car alarms.

They annoy the hell out of me too. I've lost count of the number of nights I've been woken up at about 2.00am by a faulty car alarm. I must admit I have often wanted to "take the law into my own hands", and go and go and disable the damned things, so I would definately support the law that you suggest.
