Wicca...where does one begin? |
|
After years of battling within I've decided I believe that Wicca is for me. I took a couple of days off from life to really soul search about it. I now feel sure but I really don't know where to begin or rather what is best to begin with. I did just ordered "The complete idiot's guide to Wicca and Witchcraft" I've looked at and bookmarked many sites from links I've found here and on my own. Any and all advice would be helpful.

2. SpitFire179 (1421) | 3 years ago | Congradulations to you hun! I'm not sure if there's a right or wrong place or way to start, but for me, what i did was researched the belief system, the ideas, and see how well they conform with your ideas and morals, there's many millions of sites out there for wiccans, and it's just a google search away. One site, that was my favorite one in the world, it was purple pentacles, and one day, it just vanished, i was quite upset, Because it was where i began. But now, i've realized i slacked so much, and now i just want to get back into it myself. http://www.glasstemple.com/basics/ - I think this site is awesome, strictly because it helps by giving you answers that many people search for far and wide. Some of these may be off basis, but if you look at the similarities with others, those are mostly the ones that follow. I work with candle magic, especially when healing or trying to help others. http://witchonthego.com/wicca101.html also, i found so much really wonderful stuff right here at about.com http://paganwiccan.about.com/cs/wicca101/a/whatsnext.htm Hope this helps a bit.

3. jeweledbluerose (2176) | 3 years ago | Scott Cunningham has a book called Wicca: A Guide For The Solitary Practitioner which I found to be informative. Actually anything by Scott Cunningham has a lot of information about Wiccan practices.
I have heard many that don't like anything by Silver Raven Wolf, but I found them to be good books as well. Also Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland is something that my mom recommends a beginner to read.
I don't know many websites since I am bigger about reading books than I am websites. So I hope that the authors and books I have listed are of some help. Good luck and hope you find what you are looking for in the path you have chosen.

Cunningham's Solitary Guide and Buckland's Complete Book are INVALUABLE resources that I've read numerous times.
Sadly, I think Mr. Cunninghamd passed away some years back, but I could be mistaken--please, correct me if I'm wrong. But Mr. Buckland has a wonderful website that you can peruse at your leisure: http://www.raybuckland.com/

SpitFire179 (1421) | 3 years ago | Your right, silver raven wolf has a wonderful book called - solitary witch, i loved that book, read it every day, something new, or re read a part in it, i just loved it, so yeah, that book is a for sure, there are lots of people who don't like her books, but i think it's because it's a little deeper than most.

mtdewgurl74 (10456) | 3 years ago | Well since I was curious I just went and searched wicca and found some interesting things that you might like to. Here is the link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicca and towards the bottom is a list of books that you might find that will help you. And since money is tight I would recommend getting books from the library or a bookswap place.. That would save you alot of money and you can always check the books out or write down outlines of the stuff you want to remember.Good luck and happy reading...

mari61960 (3165) | 3 years ago | Oh boy do I have stuff to read now..lol I put a post in my local Freecycle and got 17 books from one man. Among them are, Wicca a Guide for the Solitary Practicioner, Earth Power and The Magical Household by Scott Cunningham
Power of the Witch by Laurie Cabot (I almost bought it years ago in Salem Ma where she lives)
Scottish Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland
The White Goddess by Robert Graves
Aradia Gospel of the Witches by Charles G. Leland
and a whole bunch more..but these were the ones that appealed the most...and will take me a long time to go through. Any opinions of any of them?

mari61960 (3165) | 3 years ago | Maybe we could get someone to start a club....Wicca for Dummies. I'de sign up that's for sure...lol

|
|
mtdewgurl74 (10456) | 3 years ago | I'd sign up too even though my dad would through his bible at me. My mom has been interested in such things also but since they started going to church they have changed. But my father is the worst you can no longer go for a nice visit because he is constantly wanting you to read the bible or something he has written about the bible for his bible study class and wanting me to go I hate being pushed into things and He would probably disown me if I became a wicca but I htink people should be able to pratice their own beliefs and still be able to get along. but dad is like a pit bull on a tasty t-bone steak he won't let up. But.. I would be there in line with you wanting to sign up the only thing stopping me is not having the knowledge I need to do this..........

mari61960 (3165) | 3 years ago | Well if this helps any...I've had my brow ring for over 7 years and half my family still can't get used to that....My father is probably making diamond out of his ash ... He was a Jehova's Witness...lol

010878 (161) | 3 years ago | well my mother was terrified when the first time I was practicing meditation:D She even ask her minister about that is it a sin or what LOL
I'm actually ecclectic so I combine christianity and gypsy magic. I know most people consider me very weird well mostly christian people LOL but personally I can't even invoke the goddesses in wicca religion without feeling guilty and it's like something inside telling me it's wrong so I change the goddesses with Jesus and it's perfect:D no more guilty conscience LOL
But after several years my mother actually calm down because I never wear something gothic to go with my appearances LOL
So I hope your family will accept you in time:D

|
Robyn28 (205) | 3 years ago | that's too funny I think my mother thinks I'm insane 2 it's all good she has never seen me meditate I've lite insecents and my mother or my dad think I'm smoking something they go a little crazy over the smell. I keep my books hidden, but I'm open about who I am if I lived on my own it would be a different story

mtdewgurl74 (10456) | 3 years ago | My sister in law is a Johovah Witness and I went to her church a few times I stayed the weekend with her so I know a little about them. So yeah they are possibly a diamond.. That is what I am I believe in god and I am a christian but I am interested in wicca and stuff. I haven't really done any spells because I don't know enough about it. I may have done a rain one silly stuff like that but nothing really serious. My niece is interested in it she is 16 and her mom blames me and is having a cow. So I don't get much contact now with my niece even though I have never given her anything or even gguidence about anything wicca I told her to go to a library that I'd just confuse her..lol Heck I confuse myself over it..

mari61960 (3165) | 3 years ago | Haha I have a lot of family members that would throw a fit. My Father was a Witness but thankfully I don't have to worry because he's gone. My mother would say "Oh please, that's nice"...lol

mtdewgurl74 (10456) | 3 years ago | I wish I had some people in my family that understands but really they are no one. Lord you should have heard them about the tarot cards I got..lol. My mom bought them for me and then decided she didn't like the idea of me having them I still have them and if I can say so myself in my own opinion they have been correct in a lot of things. Maybe that is what is scary for them..

6. liperoterachel (10154) | 3 years ago | I love the Wiccan relgion it is so often misunderstood by others. I like the respect for nature and the fact we are all apart of each other!
Many don't even understand that most modern relgious holidays came from pagen rituals.

Robyn28 (205) | 3 years ago | I agree also some people think so many different things like it's black magic or what not there are some that do follow that, but I know that doing things on people is not good it's called bad luck or karma I've been into since I was 18 it's 10 years now I've never looked back I love it

7. 010878 (161) | 3 years ago | Well congratulations I think it's a brave step to choose:)
I think everyone will be confused and excited at the same time where to begin. Internet has so many sites for beginners. My advice is collect as many information as possible and listen to your inner voice. Ask yourself do you want to be solitary practioner or join a coven? If you want to join a coven, try searching for local coven in the internet or groups at yahoo and google. If you decide want to be solitary practioner then there are so many options to begin with.
First you need to decide which path do you want to take. There are so many path in wicca such as egyptian magick, gypsy magick, celtic magick, dll. Or you can choose to be ecclectic which means you can combine egyptian and gypsy paths.
There are many rules in Wicca but for beginners you really must read the Wiccan Rede. Ain't Harm None Do What You Will. And that including no human manipulation so definitely NO Love Spell ( sorry dear:D )
Many exciting things in wicca religion and I'd advice you to start meditate. It's not a must but every path has their own way to synch their aura/ themselves with their surrounding especially peoples with Natural Magick paths such as Celtics.
Well I hope it's not too long to read and if there's any mistake I hope anybody can correct me on this comment:)
Btw you can check http://www.sacred-texts.com for more detail explanation about all religion:)

I can't practice it very open or get any books, since my born again hubby isn't too fond of me choosing that path, so the learning process is slow in the coming. Enjoy:)
