Why do Catholics believe in statues?

There has been a lot of controversy why Catholics believe in statues and keeping them in their churches. Aside from that they also pray to these statues and walk with them in processions. Why do they do these?

whynot1268 just a comment on the response that jesus lived a long time ago. he is very much alive and well sitting on the right hand of God in heaven. and we will all find this out at the judgement day if we don't find out before. thanks.
