At 3 my children were in bed by 8 pm. They could lay there awake if they could but there was to be no noise and their eye must be closed. It is hard to stay awake under those conditions! I believe that it is important for children to get at least 10 hours sleep a night. Mine were early risers so they went to bed very early.

Forgot to add this. I did not ask them to go to bed, I told them to.

I appreciate that every child is different but 9.30 seems very late for a child of that age. Most of the 3 year olds I know are in bed by 8pm at the latest. I suppose a lot will depend on what time you all get up though.

Hello youless! I have a 2-year old nephew. As much as possible we let him have a routine time to go to bed. I believe it is not only good for his growth and development but also would help in teaching him discipline. But my nephew is so very hyperactive, I have to dance him to sleep most nights just so he will be lulled by the swaying motions hehehe. He sleeps usually around 9pm. Thanks and good day!

Before my oldest started school, bedtime was pretty flexible. With a large family and most of them now in school, though, we've had to get a little more structured. My kids are allowed to take books to bed and read as long as they want, but they have fairly early bedtimes. 2yo, 5yo and 6yo go to bed at 8pm. 8yo goes to bed at 8:30, but she may be ready to move back soon. 11yo goes to bed at 9:30. They have to get up at 6:30 for school. The 2yo is still home with me, but has to get up and ride with us when the others go to school.
Besides their own need for sleep, we send them to bed so that my husband and I can have some time alone (well, in theory-the younger ones still get up several times for one thing or another).

I've just started letting my 2year old stay up a bit longer because he doesn't ever seem to get tired! He now goes up between 7.30 and 8pm. My 7 year old goes up at 8.30 or 9pm on school days and he's allowed to read in bed if he wants until 9.30. When it's not a school day, he can stay up until 10 if he wants but then he has to go straight to sleep when he goes up.

He is too young. He will go to his bed, when he will feel tired and sleepy mood. Kids are kings of their own mood. They use to play and enjoy. No one can order them to sleep. No one can make them awaking all the time. You are doing well. You are providing him a chance of training. It is very good habit to sleep early in the night and get up early in the morning, but it all depends on the mood and will power of the person. Asleep can reach every where to catch a person and take him or her in the dreaming valley. No third person could order one to sleep soon.

One must not allow or compel the children to keep awake after 8.30 pm.
Especially the Tiny kids of 3 years of age or so, needs nearly 12 hours of rest...for getting rid of their tiredness that they accrue while playing all day long.
It is said a young kid while playing in the house, walks more than 3 kilometers a day during his/her playful activities.
So there is nothing wrong, i feel.. when your boy goes to bed by 9.30 pm.
Take care and happy mylotting.

My kids are early to bed and early to rise. they are used to it. Yah, I trained them that way. So they will have a healthy sleeping habit as they are growing. If in their adulthood they change it, then it is up to them.

You have a very nice son and you are a very lucky mother. But your methods inspired me, thanks. As to Three Pigs, I read it for thousands of time for my son. I think most parents in the world choose the similar stories for children:)

My two children, age eight and two go to sleep at about 10 every night. That is rather late and I would very much prefer them to go earlier at around half past nine or even nine if possible. However, my daughter ,the older one , is not able to sleep that early. She will be tossing and turning in bed until after 10 pm. Sigh!
