Chop, chop, c-h-o-p. OUCH! You just cut your finger. Blood begins to ooze out like cherry-flavored toothpaste. What do you do? Alright, you stay calm and clean the wound under running water. It's just a "small" cut and you will probably heal given some time. Even if you see a doctor, he is likely going to think you are crazy - but he won't really mind since he is going to charge you $30 for that plaster that costs only 20 cents. Let's assume you are at home. Will you go get a plaster and fix it on the cut so that it won't keep splitting open? A plaster is not some miracle pad, but it will at least keep the cut close and help it heal. But I do know many (guys especially) who like to shrug it off as a small thing. Who cares if it is exposed to the elements? After all, it is just a small cut and people will laugh if they know that's the "secret" the plaster is hiding. :P What do you think? Would you use a plaster if you cut yourself? Or find some alternatives if you don't have a plaster? Or shrug it off like a macho guy? Or... ? Do share your thoughts. ;-)

Oh, Wiz... what a wonderful description. I had to chuckle at that! If I cut my finger, I will rinse it under a cold water tap, dry and put on a plaster, just until the bleeding stops, because when you cut a finger, it doesn't stop bleeding for quite a while, and every time you put pressure on the finger, it bleeds again. So, for hygiene's sake, I adorn a plaster to stop the bleeding. After all, if you're preparing dinner, you don't want to bleed all over everything, do you? Once I've finished doing dinner or whatever I was doing, I will take the plaster off and leave it to the fresh air to heal naturally.

The cherry-flavored toothpaste? You like it too? :P And I thought blood in soup makes for good tonics. No?

I would use a band-aid if it's bad enough or won't stop bleeding. Usually, I run it under water and then hold a wet paper towel on it until it stops bleeding. If it won't stop, then I'll go get a band aid. Once I was walking with no shoes when I was younger. I stepped on something that felt like a rock. I paid it no mind. When I got to my friends house I heard her mom screaming from the living room. We walked back out and discovered blood all over the carpet. On closer inspection, I had sliced my foot open, probably on something metal and very sharp. We rinsed it in the tub and put a large band aid on it. About a week later, my foot was hurting so I showed it to my own mother. She nearly fainted ! The tissue from inside my foot was growing out of the wound. We went to the doctor, they had to cut excess tissue out and then give me 25 stitches. Said if I hadn't come, I could have lost my foot. Some 20 years later, I still have the scar. The moral of the story is: Sometimes it's better to look like a fool with a band aid or go to the doctor, or you might lose a body part !!

I never heard the term plaster before but I figure from the discussion it means bandaid. Yes, I am a whimp. I use a bandaid. I don't care who laughs, I hate blood and cuts. My husband on the other hand makes me so mad. He is a labourer. On several occassions he has cut him self so bad you can tell it needs stitches and it is still bleeding by the time he gets home. He is going to get an infection or something one of these days.

I'm bleeding, I need to get on with what I'm doing, so I slap on a plaster and carry on as usual, job done :-)

I think it depends on how deep the wound is and how quickly you stop bleeding as to whether or not a plaster is needed. Generally I don't use plasters because I think it's better for the air to get to the wound and for it to heal with a scab. I tend to find plasters keep the area moist rather than dry so not my preferred option.

Actually, why would air be good for the wound? (I really don't know.)

Geez, I never thought of that. I just usually wash it out, and use hydro proxide to clean it, and then wrap it with gauze, or bandage. I never thought of using plaster.

If I am going to be around something like cooking juices or dirt in the garden, I will seal the cut, because there are things like tetanus in the soil, and e-coli in the meat juices.

I cut myself frequently Wizzy, what with all the metal work I do. I dislike plasters as they tend to fall off. So when I cut myself and after i've cleaned it up - I use a "spray on bandage" - this stuff is soo cool! It seals the wound and won't wash off for a few days. Solves the problem. lol

Hi Lord, When i cut myself, i immediately wash with cool water and if and i immediately apply turmeric powder , which acts like an antiseptic agent and after some time after an hour , i again clean with cool water and then i apply band-aid and i presume my work normally :) Nice discussion....Bye and have a nice day.... Keep smiling... Thanks, Vani.

If it's only a small cut, then I will just leave it, or just use tissue papers to wipe off the blood. Otherwise, I'll apply some medicine so that it won't get germ infection. Unless it's quite serious cut, and I'm afraid when I'm working, I will make the wound worse, then I'll use a plaster. It's not very good if we use the plaster to cover the wound, and it's more difficult to recover, isn't it?

whenever you plaster a wound, you will have to put some bandage first. a bandage is a must between the plaster and the wound. it is the bandage which provides the needed aeration for the wound so it will heal fast. i had done, as a child yet, plastered a wound thinking that that is it. only to find that the wound worsens because, according to my mom, i hadn't allowed the air to take its needed action in healing wounds.

LOL "cherry-flavored toothpaste" lol yuck. I may never brush my teeth again now. LOL acturally we have some butterfly bandages which is exactly what they would use at our local hospital. My husband is a EMT-M and he also teaches American red Cross Standard first aid and CPR. So we are pretty welll ready for most emergencies. I hae never heard of "plaster" for a cut.

Another post of wizzy that I know the answer to!! I have never believed in using a plaster. Why? Not because I believe in portraying myself as a macho guy or whatever, but just that the plaster, apart from its ability to keep the cut closed, has a very unpleasant trait. It tends to attract a lot of dust. It just gets that much worse when it gets moistened when it invariable comes in contact with water. (People, including doctors tell you to keep away from water, but God knows it's the stupidest thing to say, ever!) The plaster, once wet, gathers even more of dust and grime and what not. Even if you keep it on for just a day, it gets dirty and even smelly!!! Worse, if you try to take it off, it pulls the wound open. Ugh! No plaster for me. Let nature take its own course in healing the cut. No man-made sissy stuff like plaster for me!

No I can't say i do use plaster when I cut my self. In fact this is the first I have heard of that! I just use a regular old ban daid. Cuts on the fingers are painful; they seem to take longer to heal than the rest of your body because they are always moving.

I usually don't use a plaster, it takes just a couple of minutes for the bleeding to stop anyways in normal circumstances with a superficial wound so not worth putting a plaster on, by the time the plaster is cut and applied the bleeding pretty much stopped already anyways.

But don't you feel the cut will heal better over the days if you keep it protected by a plaster? Or are you just too macho for that? :PPP

I avoid plasters at all costs, if its just a small cut i will just wrap it in some tissue paper and get on with everything, it will close itself up after half an hour or so. Why bother wasting money on plasters? plus they hurt more taking them off than the cut does

Plasters are not very expensive where I live. But I guess a tissue paper may be an acceptable alternative... :/

yes. i do use plasters/band aids. especially when the cut is bleeding, the plaster helps put pressure on the cut to stop the bleeding. Also, the plaster serves as a barrier to prevent infection by covering the wound from other dirty things that i might be holding (given the fact that i change the plaster every so often, lol). I even like using plasters with different prints. my favorites are of the disney characters by 3m. lol.

I will put loads of cold water first and press the would down firmly with cotton wool. If it is deep and doesn't close straight away then I put salt on it and lift it upwards so the blood runs back..Within minutes the salt blocks the hemorrhage and I re wash before putting on iodine and then the plaster over it. This way I have disinfected the wound. These are old Greek remedies I picked up from my Mother and they work. I hope if ever you need, you may use this method. It really works.

You kidding me barbie? Rubbing salt on cut? I know it would hurt but it works? And besides, why use it unless the wound might be infected?
