How can I tell?

I was painting my bathroom today and balancing on the edge of the sink and the ladder. The sink gave way and I bashed the inside of my ankle pretty hard against the step of the ladder. It broke the skin and turned bright and dark blue immediately. Now, 5 hours later, it is dark purple and swollen. It is seriously tender to touch. I can walk on it barefoot, I can't stand a shoe against it. Do you think I could chipped the bone?

I know you said that you could walk on it but that doesn't always mean anything. I got the crap beat out of me once and I went to the hospital because my head hurt really bad. The doc was more interested in my wrist. I couldn't figure out why. It was bruised but it didn't hurt like my head did. Well, the wrist was broken. Then another time, I went on an ambulance call to a motorcycle accident. The lady looked like she had a broken arm and leg. They just didn't look right to me. She also had a cut on her jaw that would not stop bleeding. She was talking to me fine and complained of no pain in her jaw. Turns out her jaw was broken and nothing else. Boy was I wrong. So I guess what I am saying to you is I think you need it xrayed. let us know how it turns out. And I hope you are keeping off of it and keeping it elevated.

It sounds to me like you could possibely have chipped a bone. Did you twist it in any way? I was also thinking maybe a sprained ankle but I don't how it hit.I do hope it gets better soon.

Well it is 13 hours after the fact (I just found the discussion). I hope that you took the advice of previous posters and iced the ankle, elevated the ankle and got it xrayed! Please let us know how you are doing! P.S. if the sink gave way, did it burst your pipes? Do you have water in the bathroom? I hope you are okay!

Well, it is still swollen and blue and sore. It doesn't really hurt when I walk unless I have a shoe on. I don't have a dr. I may have the nurse practitioner at work look at it tomorrow and see if she thinks I need an xray. Somehow, the sink didn't come all the way off the wall. The water is still attached, but that is about it. The sink didn't work anyway. My dad is supposed to replace it for me.

Get it elevated and get some ice on it and try not to walk on it at all. And get to the doctors on Monday

Agree, get ice-bag on it and ease the pain. If really unbearable; go to the emergency check-in doctor immediately. Do take care.

OUch. So sorry to hear about this. Hopefully it's feeling a little better as I am writing this. It could possibly be that you chipped a bone or fractured it. Did you know that sometimes a sprain can be worse than a break? If you have medical- I would go to the ER if you don't mind going there. They can get you a removeable cast that will help make it not move around plus give you some anti inflammatory meds and maybe some pain meds. Keep it up and don't let it hang down so the swelling won't get worse. Let us know how you are doing.

I seriously think you need to go see a doctor or something. That sounds really serious to me.

There's a possibility you could have chipped a bone if it's swollen. See how it's going by Monday, when the doctor's surgery is open, and if the swelling hasn't reduced, go visit him. It's also possible you've bruised the bone by knocking it against the sink, but the swelling should go down and it should start to get less tender in two days if that's the case. I would definitely go to the doctor if you're not sure or if you're in a lot of pain before the surgery opens on Monday, go to the hospital for an xray.

First I have to say ouch, that sounds painful to do. Second, it's better to be safe then sorry. If you can get it checked out do so. If it's just a sprain so be it but if it's more serious then you want to get it checked out. The fact that it turned colors like that so quickly makes me think it' more then just a bruise especially with it swelling up that way. If you can't get it checked out then please put ice on it and make sure to elevate it. That will help the swelling.

OUCH!!!! It's 12 hours later. How's it doing now? If this happened to me, I would ice it, wrap it and stay off it. If the swelling doesn't go down by the end of today, I would go to the emergency room. I don't know what they can do for a chipped bone, but it sounds nasty. I am realy sorry you hurt yourself. PEACE

Yep, as others have mentioned - go to the Doc as soon as possible and get it x-rayed. Go to the emergency room if you haven't a doctor. getting it x-rayed early will be better- again, you don't want them to have to rebreak something and cause you lots of surgery time and extended hospital stays if it doesn't heal right! When it comes to walking, you should be very careful of how you treat your joints. Only a few years down the road injuries of this nature take on extreme importance. It could hurt you in your later years, so get it taken care of ASAP. If it's just a tiny chip, and it's not floating around, you may get off with a cast and few days off work. That's better than being crippled! ;)

I'm sorry to hear about your accident. this sounds like either a chipped bone, or a serious strain. Strains can turn that way too. In either case, you'd better have that taken care of. If you wait too long, other complications can arise and you will be in more pain then necessary. For the moment, at least stay off it, elevate it and ice it down. If you have motrin (ibuprophine) take some of that. The key is to keep the swelling down.

Definately head into the doctor's. I snapped my pinkie toe on the edge of a chair and thought nothing of it. It hurt for weeks and when I finally went in I found out that I had fractured the side of my foot and it was already starting to heal. I should have just gone in and had an xray and dealt with it from there with some pain meds.
