How to avoid doing what you should be doing!

1. Start by rearranging furniture that was just arranged a week ago. 2. Go to the store and spend a half hour visiting with the clerk. 3. Eat mini-tootsie rolls and make a ball from the little individual wrappers. 4. Sign up for some more PPC sites and play with them. 5. Get involved in a TV show you've seen a dozen times already. 6. Respond to discussions on myLot and then other's responses on those also. 7. Oh and then start a discussion of your own to which you can spend all kinds of time commenting on the responses. So what should I be doing? 1. Crochet 2 baby afghans with matching pillows. 2. Write posts for 2 blogs (my own and one paid for job) 3. Submit comments on other blogs promoting a 3rd blog job. 4. Do research for a friend/business partner on a new project. 5. Work out marketing plan for Angel pins/magnets/ornaments I make. My heart just doesn't seem to be into any of them this evening and believe it or not the house is actually quiet except for the noise I'm making :( What do you do when you are procrastinating doing something else? Do you stay on target and do what needs to be done? How long can or have you managed to put off jobs, duties, or tasks that you don't want to do?

wow! byfaithonly ,you seems to be very busy and an organize person .I can't plan to anything on week day because i am working ,except after work. But after work i kind of tired and i don't have a strong desire to do anything unless it's very important or urgent that needed to be done on time. To be honest with you ,i do have a procashtinate nature for the stuff that not so important.I will probably delay for a month or so depends on how important it is. But i will never procrastinate to clean up my house because i hate dirty.

Well having that nature is not always good when I'm my own boss and work from home. Watch I'll be down to the last wire with deadlines and kick into overdrive staying up all night and all to get things finished up - so far I've always managed to pull it off but I keep thinking one of these days it's going to come back to bite me :(

Very true and afraid I've been battling this problem for years and years - I actually have gotten better though and writing out lists for myself helps. Don't know why though today it just all went out the window.

LOL - I went from planning to write all day to setting up 60 gallon fish tank, filling my water bed, and mowing a half an acre of yard (I just did the front - on a riding mower).

...yes, there's a short list on my kitchen counter right now.. which I wrote last night, or rather early this morning, when I thought of them in the middle of the night.. realized I should have them done by now, so wrote the little list.. I manage to get things done.. but how.. I'm not always sure.. I do pray about it a lot as I'm sure you do too.. I count them all as jobs for Jesus, and try not to worry about it too awful much! Godspeed to ya!:)

Yes, I do pray alot that I will get the things done that I need to but for some reason I am begining to think there is something God wants me to learn in this. I think this alot when God doesn't answer my prayer - there must be some reason He's not answering it and I need to learn what His plans are for me.

What I been postponing to do is clean the refrigerator and the range, I hate doing those tasks, but somebody has to do it, though! So mind us well do it without thinking!

LOL - I noticed this morning the fridge needs cleaning but didn't even remember long enough to put it on my list :( Great idea though just do it and don't think about it - after I posted this discussion I decided to 'get busy' on my list and don't you know the house went crazy and have had so many interruptions now I feel like giving up until morning. Blessing is everyone else in the house sleeps later than me so if I stay off mylot I can get a good 3-4 hours writing work in before anyone wakes up.

:) Sometimes I procrastinate too. But I figure it will only make me run to meet a deadline after so I tend to be very careful and avoid procrastinating. I have noticed that lately I have been avoiding doing a few thing that I know need to be done, but I have been really tired and this last month at school was way too busy. This time as school was over I decided to dedicate the first week to just rest and relax so I"m fine to work on what is needed after with more energy. Of course this can be taken and a plan of action or more procrastinating LOL But my poor brain really needs some rest before I tackle anything else.

Oh when I had 'breaks' from school or work I would say the same thing - going to take a week off which turned into a month or months. One summer the company I worked for closed for several months my routine was 'go to the lake' everyday - ended up getting none of the things done around the house I had 'planned' on doing...

:) sounds like a good plan now put it into action :) That's where I have my biggest problem and greatest case of procrastination - planning, I'll spend days and days planning and run out of energy before it happens :)

I had to laugh at this....It's not so much that I'm a procrastinator but I sure as heck wish there were at least 60 hours in a day to do everything--I'm probably as guilty as you about how much time I spend here...not that I'm complaining as I do love it here..but then I realize all those other things I should be doing as well--Like spend time on my own crafts..writing..both articles that maybe I could write over at Helium or Gather or Associated content AND my own short stories...then realizing I need to do more photo work--and then realizing that maybe I should tackle organizing all the tons of paperwork that has accumulated..and on and on One thing I do find helpful though so it at least sets some kind of "target" of goals...I have one book, than at the end of the month I map out what I want to achieve and accomplish for the next month..I break it down to photo goals/writing/crafts, and what I call my "freedom" from obstacles goals..like going on the subway hehe--Then another book where I map out what I want to do for that week, and then another book for what I want to do that day--it's then amazing how much I will do...but still....I just wish I had more time each day---and then of course are the days where you have all things nicely planned and something unexpected comes up and will throw me off track

LOL yep writing (for others and my own), crafts, and photography (which I really would like to get more involved in)... I love your idea about the books. I make lists but the next day I lose them, accidentally on purpose. With the book thing they would be in one place and could look back at past days, weeks, months and see what progress I made. I am going to try doing that... maybe at least manage 50 hours in a day :)

Preaching to the converted lolololol. My routine is the usual writer's routine. Clear out all the stationery, make lists of what I need, notice that there is a bit of dust and move that, make a cup of tea as I have made myself thirsty, read the post, even the junk mail. Play on Mylot. I would do the marketing plan next though. You need to have a few days to think about it after it is done, so get the horrid job out of the way and then back to mylot to see what other ways people have to be busy doing nothing lol. Oh, for fun, here are the lyrics! http://www.lyricsbook.net/lyrics/116748.html (yup, more procrastination by me there, I should be doing something else too lol)

I have my uses :-) I didn't spend my whole life procrastinating without picking up a few tips lol. Glad you are able to get some of the stuff done. Half the trick of a "to do" list is to put some things on that don't need doing, then when you have crossed off what you have done you have the satisfaction of leaving something until tomorrow. Yes, lyrics, I shall be a good girl and not put any more appropriate ones in, but I do love that song :-)

oh great list idea - include things I've already done then I'll get a feeling of satisfaction to boot :) Just look at all I've done :) Ok plans changed already this morning, just spent over an hour trying to get the seats back in the mini-van :( removed them to haul stuff when we moved but they've been sitting outside and we're expecting storms this afternoon... Opps may lose power then I will have an excuse for not getting work done - again :(

Oh dear you have me laughing so hard I'm crying - move the dust :) too funny. My goal today is to do the blog stuff first - actually those are the least time consuming so can accomplish 3 things fairly quickly (have all my research done already so just need to WRITE). I'll get the one out of the way with the comments and that'll be done and is $75 in my pocket. The other two blogs I should be able to write a week's worth of entries in a day so that will free up several days starting tomorrow to work on the marketing plan - that will take at least a day with setting up web page, testing meta tags and keywords, and submitting to search engines and directories... Then I should be able to switch gears back to researching for the friend's project, playing with web pages for her, and going through same marketing as for the angels. Don't even get me started on lyrics and music sites :( great procrastination for me too - I am writing for blogs NOW, really, honestly, as soon as I ......

1. Some one would help you rearranging furniture? I have to arrange mine when my furniture finished. 2. Found a good company. I have not found yet at this time. 3. I ate spring rolls I will have some more. 4. I have already signed up some PPC.They are just a few bucks. 5. I have never got involved in the T.V show, it sounds interesting. 6. I response to mylotters at the discussion too. 7. You should start your new favorite start discussion. You sound busier, I just do daily work outside, and come back to myLot when I am free. Just work and work....And teaching ....too

I can always avoid what i should be doing by sitting here at the computer. I either go on my myspace, or on mylot. Easy to do. Too easy. I am a stay at home Mom and I make hair bows and sew. I'd get my orders completed a lot more quickly if I didn't just putz around and sit at the computer. I often stress myself out thinking something's going to be difficult. I worry; then, I do unnecessary things. So easy to procrastinate.

Oh yes, the computer is a great distraction and so easy to spend an entire day just on here rather than doing more productive things.

Hmm, I know the feeling. Your avidance tactics are similar to mine. 1. Spend a lot of time on My LOt, not earning much. 2. Have a coffee, whilst reading my latest novel. 3. Delete emails. 4. Download infacta group mail. What I should be doing: 1. sorting out the dishes 2. washing the floor. 3. pulling up weeds out the front. 4. More vacuuming. Notice that everything I avoid is housework. PS. I put your blog link up on my blog.

LOL - I didn't even put the household chores on my list - ignorance is bliss? If I don't see it maybe it'll go away. And e-mail - oh goodness I've checked it a million times today - like someone is going to send me a million dollars on a holiday weekend yea right sure NOT. p.s. I added your blog to my list also but ment to message you - what do you use as a 'title'? For the moment I put Music - MySpace but wasn't sure - I can change it no problem if it's something else...

I wish I were more like that - I would have such a list of things to do if I had shorter or more defined deadlines. I do like one of the ideas here of keeping a sort of journal of projects and such that I need or want to do.

It sounds like you need Calgon to take you away! I too am a procrastinator. It's hard to stay focused some days. I'll get on the computer or watch movies, when my Sims game worked, I would spend hours on that, I usually did that at night after everyone went to bed, then I'd check the clock and it would be 3 AM, time flies when you're doing one thing when you know you should be doing something else. Then there's no time for doing what you should have been doing the whole time. I try to get it done as soon as I realize that I've wasted too much time, which is usually right before I go to bed, I'll finish up the laundry, straighten up or run the dishwasher, that way maybe no one will notice that I was fooling around instead of working.

Oh Solataire is a huge problem for me - I am amazed I didn't get into that yesterday, I will get stuck there an entire day. Just keep saying, "one more game, just one more game, ok this is the last game". LOL amazing what we can accomplish in a short period of time when we put our minds to it - or want to cover up :)

Hi Faith, We all have days when we just arent in the mood for doing what you should be doing. And of course when your not into what your doing its real easy to get sidetracked into doing something less monotonous. Actually the things you have on your todo list sounds kind of like the things my wife does in her spare time. She does some crafts and sewing. Take care, Terry

thanks twils I certainly hope this only lasts a day :) I used to do 'crafts' in my spare time, crochetting particularly was relaxing for me. Then someone suggested I sell some of my work. Normally I just sell 'what I have on hand' but a lady ordered and paid in advance for 2 baby sets (she's a repeat customer) and she always pays very well so 'need' to get these done - my hobby has turned into work :(

you're right, mylot is great for procrastination. well, work is always less fun than entertainment... even a favourite hobby can become a chore if we have to do it for a living and have deadlines. i put off cleaning my bathroom for quite a while now. it's really gross to clean the hairtrap. maybe i can pay my hubby to do it heh.

Depending on how badly I want to put off the task at hand. I can occasionally put off tasks for days at a time, much too long. Usually I don't put them off quite that long before I end up having to get busy and get to work on them, but every once it a while I just can't motivate myself and I put them off for longer. MyLot is one of my main distractions when I sidetrack myself from doing what needs to get done.

Oh I'm usually all over the place LOL. I tend to be involved in a bunch of things at once. It is really easy for me to just grab something I would rather do! I am selling my crafts so even if I am just playing around rather than seriuos crafting I just tell people "I'm working". I can even convince myself of that sometimes LOL

Thanks for a good discussion. Ok. First of all I don't get time to do procrastinate. I know it sound very odd, but from last few months I don't get time to do thing which I want to do apart from my daily duties and responsibilities. But, when I feel that I am doing something, which I should not do I just try to stop it. It is very hard to stop as it is part of refreshment from boring daily duties. We all need such activities in our daily life which allow us to recharge ourselves and refresh us from daily responsibilities.
