How Do You Water Your Yard?

Do you use sprinklers? Does it have a timer? Or do you water by using hoses? Or do you use a watering can? Or do you use something else? Maybe you don't have a yard to water? I usually use some sprinklers attached to hoses to keep my yard watered. My kids even help me so that our trees and grass stay green. :) So, how do you water? Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

Well I live in England, where it rains pretty much every day of the year - so it really isn't an issue for me. The skies just open and do it naturally:-)) But if we ever do have a dry spell of a few days in Summer, then I will get a watering can for the flowers, the patio tubs, and the hanging baskets, and a hosepipe on the lawn. As I say though - English weather is notorious for rain - so we don't really come across this problem much!!!

You are lucky with all that rain. I have been to England & it is very pretty with all the "green".

The skies do it for me too...during the winter! LOL Okay, it also rains during the spring, but summertime it gets so hot and dry out that I have to keep my yard watered otherwise all the trees, bushes, and grass would suffer. :(

water's way too expensive here to have sprinklers going..my lawn usually doesn't need it,i couldn't kill that grass if i tried.but i do water the ornamental hedges and plants with the hose if they look like they're wilting at all.my hydrangea seems particularily subseptible to high heat.

High heat is normal in spring and summer here so I hand water almost every day to keep the trees happy, as for lawn, I really don't have much of one.

I have not really been one to water the yard. Whatever rain we gets suffices. We have had tons of rain this year. I do put a sprinkler in my garden, and we run it once or twice in a week or two. I carry water to houseplants if I cannot get to them with hoses.

Lucky you, I wish we'd get enough rain so I wouldn't have to water.

Oh, I'm glad I have a well and don't have water restrictions. I don't over water, but I would hate to be told when I can water just the same. My oldest son loves to help water and with being autistic I'm sure he'd go more crazy than I would if he was told when he can or cannot water our yard. :P

I usually water my front yard by hand. It's so small that using the sprinkler is a waste of time because I can't turn the water up very high or I end up watering the neighbor's yard too. Now the back yard is a different story. It's huge, so I put the sprinklers to use.

Oh, I don't blame you for watering your front yard that way. I certainly wouldn't want to be watering my neighbors yard, even if my neighbor is also my landlord. :P LOL They keep their yard watered well enough (even better than I water :P), so there's no need to water theirs too.

Living on a farm i tend not to water my lawn and dandelions actually most of it is dandelions or weeds...it takes six hours to mow with a push mower and I'm quite happy if it grows slow! The last couple years it seems to rain most of the summer so i dont have to water it. Just had to mow it lots! In the city with a "city" lawn i used to turn sprinklers on every once in a while for it to stay green.

LOL! How funny! What's even funnier is that my take on it has changed. I don't water like I used to, even though I'm still at the same place. My poor yard really suffered last year. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep it up this year as I like it nice and green. Happy mylotting!

This is a good question, as all watering of our garedn is banned here. last summer we had level three restrctions. This meant we could only use a sprinkler after certain hours, and only on an odd or even night. Sprinklers were restricted from between 8.00pm & 5.00am. We could only use hoses after 5.00pm. Now, we are on level four or five restrcitiomns. They have banned all watering, except with a watering can. This is very difficult with my big front yard.

I feel for you jennybianca. I have a big yard too and it is difficult enough to keep it watered as it is, I couldn't imagine watering it from a watering can. It would take my all day (and probably most of the night) to get my yard watered that way. :(

We don't water our yard, except for dumping out the baby pool. It's not worth it to us to water our lawn. I'm not really concerned about how our yard looks as far as the color of the grass. It just seems to be a waste of water to keep watering everyday. We let the rain take care of most of it. We do dump the baby pool in a different place everytime, but that's the closest we come to watering.

I don't have a baby pool for my kids anymore, but when I did I have dumped the pool water on the lawn in the past, though it only watered a small portion of the yard. My yard is a good size (close to an acre) so I would still have to water the rest of it. And with there being a lot of trees and bushes I have to keep my yard watered or they would suffer. All those trees help keep my house shaded which helps keep it cool in the hot weather.

We have to carry buckets of water and a deeper to water our garden. It's very hard to do it but it's a good exercise especially us employed. We do it thrice a week. For the previous two weeks we did not watered it manually because it rains and it's really a great help from the Lord.

ha ha... any plants that comes my way, if need watering, will always die at my hands. I always forget to water them. In fact, the only plants I have are those that can survive in a vase full of water. I have started to use those gel beads and they are the longest lasting flowers I have had so far. Sad. I dun have the green thumb, but I love flowers. My mum has a mini garden outside her flat and she has a bunch of really beautiful flowers.

I never claimed to have a green thumb. LOL I'm terrible with house plants and I always forget to water them. LOL Watering the yard is easier for me because my oldest loves to help. He's my little gardener. :)

Hi. During summertime the lawn and gardens to tend to get dry and start to look brown, we usually use our hose to water everything... Otherwise It could rain, that way everything everywhere gets watered...

I wish I could get away with watering every other day, but since my yard is big I have to water daily as I don't always water in the same spot.

I don't. I live in a development in the foothills of some mountains that is supposed to be kept natural. My big problem is that whenever we get rain the weeds and wild grassses grow very fast as happens in high desert country and need to be gotten rid of to avoid the hazard of fire when they dry out. I came very close to a fire getting to my house the first summer I lived in it. Fortunately the damage was limited to a fence and some boards on a patio roof and discoloration of some stucco.

Oh I don't like fires at all. We had two in the field I live on this past summer. The second one was bigger than the first, though luckily the firefighter and helicopter were able to put it out before it could do any major damage. Living on a lot of acreage is nice, but when there is a fire hazard like tall dried out weeds it can be downright scary.

We don’t water the yard- It gets watered by the rain- We do water the garden and all the flower beds and boxes- We do this with a watering can filled by the outside hose. We have 6+ acres of yard- I think we would run out of water!

Hi Sacmom, on a normal year I have a sprinkler attached to a hose. This year with all the long hours I've been working, I've kind of just let the yard go. The rain has kept it pretty well watered anyway. I have been mowwing it about once a month when it really starts to look bad. Its starting to dry out now but summers almost over anyway so I figure that I saved quite a bit on the water bill. Take care, Terry

I usually just use buckets of water that have been collected around the house. These come from either washing dishes and plates (only if they have been watered and no washing shampoo have been used) as well as whenever I need to clean the water in the fish tank. They go straight into the yard.

Where I live now you would never see anyone watering their grass. No sprinklers or hoses on it. It rain enough the grass is always fine. But in toronto I used to see lots of sprinklers watering the grass. Less rain there than Nova Scotia I think.
