Why are the Powers That Be Saying...

United States

I have been hearing for the past couple of days that a new video of Bin Laden is about to surface just in time for the anniversary of 9/11. I do not understand why our government is saying that there does not seem to be any credible threat to the US on this date and no extra precautions are been planned for our country. I think we should be more alert and definitely be more diligent not just brush it off or are they being sneaky and saying this to fool our enemies? I am afraid this would be just daring them to try. What do you think. Opinions please I am really interested in what your think.

It is possible that they are trying to draw out specific terrorists (that may be closely linked to Bin Laden) by saying that we are not going to take any precautions, who knows.

That was also one of my thoughts.

They may be saying this to keep the public calm; not get people in a panic. It's hard for me to say, as I am not 100% up todate on threats to America. I do know that the not so long ago bombings, & attempted bombings in England, were linked to Australia. This suggests to me that the terrorist threat is widespread. By no means shoukd the US government be casual about anything Bin Laden says. At the moment, the biggest risk to Bush are the protesters in Australia!!

Well there was a plot uncovered that they were planning attacks in Germany fot the anniversary! I do think it might be the powers that be being sneaky and I have to say that if they did anything else they would probably be decried for it! Also remember that so far no attacks have taken place on the anniversary! xxx

And yes I include that in my part about schemes being diffused. Still I do believe security could be better. Then again, maybe I'm too paranoid or perhaps I'm just too much mother hen when it comes to the liberty and safety of the people.

. I live on base as my husband contracts to Customs/Homeland Security (he's taking classes to change his career), and I wonder if this is safer or not. Kirkland is pretty secure and in the case of a biological threat it would be shut down - no one in or out I'm told by my friends husband who is a flight instructor and still in the Air Force. He said each house would likely be given special air ventilation units. On the other hand, there are nukes inside the mountains on base and we would be an ideal target. So living here could be even more dangerous. The scariest thing about 9/11 was the feeling of security most of had just stripped away in such a short time. The really scary thing is that President Bush has the power to invoke Martial Law as of this year. So in a way it would be a good thing for him as he would remain in presidency for the duration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iG6pJUCQfg http://world.commongate.com/post/Bush_Signs_Bill_Enabling_Martial_Law/ http://www.rense.com/general74/onestep.htm http://www.rwor.org/a/093/martial-law-update-en.html

artemis your statement waving a flag to a bull is the same idea as my daring them and that prompted this discussion. Thanks for your interesting links.

I too wonder about the same thing - how us saying we're secure is maybe like the red flag in front of the bull - egging him on to attack.

I think the martial law was already invoked (May Coup) but yea either way you are right it is a scary thought. There's also some suspicious crap going on in the southwest and some weird nation merging talk on some government websites (particularly transportation). Arte, I do think you and the other posters have a great point about declaring safety and security basically being a "come get us" call. Anyhow, I wish you and your husband happiness and safety. Everyone, take care, be safe and watch yourselves and your politicians.

Totally agree with you on this. The US isn't as secure. Sure we've busted some plans and attacks, but there are still several vulnerabilities, gaps and inexplicables, that have sprung up in recent and current events. Part of why they say things like you stated Heather, its just common statements for the public, just so they can feel safe and assured. A good number of people know to look beyond that however.

I am just glad that day passed quietly and in remembrance.

I think that is just the "party line" and I am hoping that they are on top of things. The public denial may be viewed as a taunt, and make them more determined, but I do not think it would be any better to be getting everyone scared by issuing warnings without details.

There was an attack planned for Germany on that date, which looks like being foiled. It would be absolutely stupid to think that there will not be any plans for attacks on other countries on that date (or any other one) either.

I think they should just stop talking about it. Either way it encourages or informs the enemy. Why do we want to do that?

I think it's a way for the media to create more news interest in the anniversary (as if we could forget) Some of the reports I've heard do not come from the government, but reporters that speak Arabic and can read these web sites set up for recruiting. That's where the announcement is coming from. Some of these same reports state that some of the footage in the video shows OLDer pictures of Bin Laden in the footage. There have been other videos released in the past and nothing happened so I guess our government is not relying on these new reports as credible information, or they believe our security is so good nothing will happen. I really don't know what to think, so I will be careful and keep away from crowded areas, the airport, bus terminals. However, if something is destined to happen then there is nothing we can do but help one another in the aftermath.

Because Bin Laden doesn't go out publicly and announce he's going to attack but is under ground with his resources in how he works. We never know when exactly he will TRY and maybe even succeed in doing so again so it's much better to be safe than to be sorry.
