I just got dome talking to the social services office and my dad is being transg=ferred to an after care facility at 4 tonight. This is a big burden finally off my shoulders as I sat all weekend wondering when he would be trabsferred if at all. I went on a tour of the facility he will be at. Not really a pleasant visit. Not becuase of anything bad just depressing seeing so many old people dependant on others to lead a normal daily life. I hope things work out well for dad so he can come back home and get back to his normal activities even though they were very limited. he has not walked a whole lot for 8 days so that's the main concern. many other concerns as far as occupational therapy and physical therapy. he needs to get back to doing for himself as he is not an invalid nor crippled. Just wanted to let friends and others that have shown concern what is happening. I still won'y be around much as I don't want to tie up the phone line. yeah I have dial-up. Uggghhh! Hahaha! Thanks all once again for all the prayers and great support shown towards dad and the rest of us here. It's been great and heartwarming as well. I will try really hard to get on late at night though I think.

YAHOO!!! I can hear the excitment in your voice as I was reading your post. I'm glad that Dad is getting somewhere, and there are people there that can help him get where he is supposed to be. Looks like those prayers and well wishes are paying off. I'll keep mine going for a while longer, so he makes it home safely.
I used to work in a care facility like that. (I was a cook.) It was so sad to see those people just waiting for someone to help them get dressed or go to bed. I did find, though, that some of them were happy because they got to see their friends everyday! :)

iT WAS DEPRESSING JUST VISITING THE SITE FOR A TOUR TO SEE THESE HELPLESS PEOPLE. I prayed for each of them tonight myself as well. I am hoping that dad may get to know a few and maybe want to get out after he gets home even. Would be nice to see dad socialize with some his age.

I am so happy you have good news to report. I am also happy that you are keeping us posted with what has been happening. I have noticed that you haven't been on that much lately, gotta get the DSL, you will love it. One of the main things for your dads recovery, will be his attitude. If he wants to get well and strong and works hard to do it he will. He will get to go home in no time. Just don't let him get too discouraged and give up. Nursing homes can be sad for some of the patients, there are so many elderly that don't have anybody who care about them. Take care.

That's the only thing I am concerned about. Him giving up. he doesn't care at times. So I am hoping he makes some friends maybe. he seems determined to get about walking again etc. I can only hope for the best.

Thanks bunches. They had him up and walking a few times a day at the hospital this weekend. So he is prepared. But I think he will be stunned when they start with him at the home as it is going to be rigorous. Oh well. Hahahaha!!

Good news! Often long term care facilities can bring in or provide just the right services to help people regain their independence. It has to do with being willing to do what is asked of them, though, and not giving up. Hope your dad is one of those stubborn old coots who works the legs off the therapists so he can go back home.

He is NEVER willing to do anything on his own actually. The only way he will do anything along these lines is if he is told by a Dr that it HAS to be done. And that's the only reason he is there. Otherwise if they had "suggested" it he would have told them no. Im hoping for the best results myself. We shall see in a week or two.

This is good news. You have done the right thing in getting your Dad organised for care. It is too much to do it yourself. He will get the proper medication at the right time & services to rehabilitate himself, on site.
This is much easier on everyone.
I guess you can visit your Dad as often as you like there.
Do they know how long your Dad might be there?

I'm glad he is able to leave the hospital. I would have felt sad to see a lot of older people needing help to manage. Its sad to get older and need help to do simple things. Its good to hear things are looking up now.

Oh when I went for a tour this afternoon there was an old lady sitting on the deck huffing away on her smokes like a chimney. Grrr! I just hope he doesn't lose hope. I don't know if I can handle trying to tend to him if he is bed ridden etc.

Hi Grandpa Bob,
This is really good news, and what a relief for you too. It's so wonderful that you're willing and able to care for your dad at home. I've visited people in those facilities, and it really can be very sad. Some that are in there, are just totally abandoned by their 'families.' I pray he'll come along just great, and will be back home before you know it. Take Care.

I know a few people in the AA club that have put family into homes and forgot about them. IF I ever oput him in one I could never just leave him and forget him. That's sooo sad to do to another human. Thankx.

I personally know an older lady (in her seventies), who's been completely abandoned by her adult children. She's a member of our church, and some wonderful people pick her up, and get her out each Sunday that it's possible. She walks with a walker, and her health isn't good, as she's taken many falls etc. She lives in a lovely seniors facility, but if it wasn't for friends, she'd have nobody. I just don't understand how families can do this. I only wish I'd had my parents with me for much longer. You're such a good example, Grandpa Bob, of the way things should be, in this regard.

I am so glad he is getting better and coming out of hospital. He should be fine as long as he becomes active as you say and if he eats well and gets extra vitamins etc.
Does dial up not work out very expensive if you are on the Internet a lot?

I am hoping he does well as far as walking and going to the bathroom by himself. I can't handle changing diapers on an adult. YUCK!! Thanks.
