Why is God a he?

I'm not religious but I consider myself spiritual. I don't believe in the bible but I do believe in a God, Supreme Being, Intelligence, The Source, whatever you want to call it. I actually get a little bothered when people always refer to god as he. I have to admit that when I was growing up I was conditioned to sort of believing in that but as I questioned and searched my beliefs I feel "god" has no gender. Why do people need to identify God as a he?

Hi dreamy1,first of thanks for discussion of this topic.I think you are right,I belive the same.I would like to share my beliefs as:- I feel, there is only one super power who controlls the universe. It has no shape, but for our convinience we try to see it in shape. So few people called him as Alla,Yeshu or Rama..etc.If you close your eyes and try to see this all images then you will realise that all images will get disappear after 10-20 secs. And you will see only darkness or different shades of colour. This happen with everyone so it may prove that god has no shape and gender as well. Thanks once again for discussion and have a nice day.

I think its probably due to most religions referring to god as a he (Buddha, Allah, etc) so it puts people in the mindset that if there is a god then it's got to be a guy. On top of that being an authority figure society has a preconception that it must be a guy even though theres absolutely nothing to say either way from that perspective. Of course there are religions that refer to god being without gender but seeing as I mentioned some of the major ones you can see how it might get skewed a bit.

God is beyond gender - we call Him he because it is impersonal, while God is not. We don't call him she simply because of convention, but God refers to Himself in the bible as mother, father, jealous lover, mother hen, amongst others.

In the english langauage many times entitys even those without a gender or whose gender is unknown will often be known as a he. So instead of calling god an it they call god a he.

I can see that reasoning.

You don´t have to have a religion to be a believer. You have already admitted you believe in "God". Only your definition is in other words. You can also say, God is Energy, everywhere, all the time. Energy is Love. There is no gender. There are some men that like to believe God is a man. That way they feel like a God.LOL. Thank God, not all men are the same. We wemen would all be locked up if they were,LOL! Take care, have a nice day.

Here is my take on why God is a "he": In the Christian/ Jewish bible God is considered the Father. The reason is that in the biblical days women did not have as much power and influence as men did. Thus, in order for God to have the respect he needed he was equated to a father. In the family unit a father was the one that was most looked up to. That's just the way I see it. I'm not a religious expert, but even in the evangelical Christian churches today they still teach that men are the head of the household and are the spiritual leaders.

Yes this is probably the reason.

God is not a he. That is someoneelses preconception and your preoccupation. God is before all divisions, all seperations, all differentiations. Nothing that we know can be applied to understanding God. Only questions and notions can guide us.

Nice question !!! but the answer is still convention !!! But in Hindu religion ... loads of GODs are 'SHE' .. mother Durga is one of examples !!! look some countries are addressed as she .. Like India !! or some as He .. Like America ... is there any valid reason for that !!! no I think !! answer of ur question is clear I think !!! Or may be there are some other reason !!! In Sanskrit all the abstract objects are addressed as He or She !!! by that may be GOD is HE !!!

Great question! I said that to my mom once (she's almost 91) and she got almost offended and said that of course, God is a man! I said I didn't think he was necessarily any gender but she didn't seem to "get" that but that's my opinion. I'm like you, I'm not deeply religious but I think I believe in something. I just never want to stop asking questions. I think it's like some of the other posters have said, it's been accepted that males are somehow superior to females so therefore God must be a male; I say that's bull! The bible was written by men so of course the God they wrote about would be a man. Annie

he's not a he at all. he can be she. its all social definition.God isnt a he or a she.because when you use he or she it refers to a gender and God doesnt have gender.i think he was called a he, father, because the male being is higher than a female.so instead of a she its better to use he.

she will love you, she will help you, she will call you My Child, if God is a female.

to what ever faith u follow, does not matter.u have faith on god...,it is enough.he is the supreme power,he is the creator of this universe. he is the source of all power, all souls.it is the desire of that supreme authority prevails and all things are false. right, god has no gender and he prevails in all souls including animals. some people identify god as 'he', some identify as 'she' and a few say 'it'.in whatever form u call it will reach him.

Great discussion you have placed here. bbsr13 did a universal truth. However prior to answering, let me know….when you talk about bbsr13, what pronoun would you like to use?

You say god has no gender but why do you keep referring to god as he? "he is the supreme power,he is the creator of this universe. he is the source of all power..." I just say god is the supreme power, god is the creator of the universe...
