so my kitten, a tuxedo cat, lovesssssssss to play fetch. he has an obsession with pony tails and if there is one laying around, he goes to get it and brings it to me, but he's not bringing me a present, he wants me to toss it for him and then he pounces on it... only to bring it back and start alll over again.. i've never had a cat before so i'm wondering if this is normal.. its frigging adorable!!

A long time ago, there was a toy that came in a cereal box called "Wacky Wallcrawlers" . It looked like a small, rubber octopus and when you throw it against the wall, it moved like it was crawling down it. Well, my old cat, Jespah, would take it and bite the legs off. We would then toss it down the hallway and she would bring it back every time. Even when we ignored her, he would jump up on us and drop the toy on our lap or stomach (if we were laying down). She could do this for hours. It was funny. We would buy that cereal just so that we could play with her with that toy because she kept loosing it under a heavy piece of furniture. And, when she lost it, she would look for it over and over for days.

i'm so happy when he plays! he's adorable.. we got him from a rescue and he is just tons of fun. we were a lil sad since he had 4 brothers that we couldn't take but he's adapting well. he's sitting right here freaking out on the computer cursor..we buy him all kinds of toys and he loves shoe laces and crumpled up pieces of paper...

Do U remember those little RC cars that were popular 'bout 5 years ago...
My Cat "Kitty" was afraid of it at first, but once she realized it was a toy, she would chase it, play hockey w/it & bring it to me when it ran out of juice so I could recharge it. Eventually she would wind up throwing it under the couch, (It was a sleeper, so it was heavy) If she could C it, she would meow & paw at it till I moved the couch & got it out...They R remarkable creatures...
Mine used 2 sit across my lap when I was on the computer or she would sit up on my right leg & track the cursor, occasionally pawed at it... I do miss her...

That's adorable. I have had a number of darling cats in my family. Only one (who likes to sleep in my room often) plays fetch. We were thinking we had a genius kitty! So, it does take brain to do that. It's also great exercise, which our cats need!
Keep it up. And hey, all of us should videotape that!

I saw a special on the Discovery Channel...
Or was it Nova? Or the science channel on domestic housecats...
many curious things about them, one of which is the reason they like 2 sleep in the sun or w/their owners is their temperature drops 3-4 degrees when they sleep...

Hi, glad you saw a program on domestic cats. We still know so little about them. But yes, they love heat like crazy! At least my kitty does. Whenever I turn the little heater on in my room (portable), she'll quickly come onto my lap (only if the heater is on there). And the rare, dreamy nights when she actually comes ONTO my bed (instead of the bed she claimed that is on top of a high shelf), is if it is a colder night. :o)

I have had cats that fetch. One of them used to play fetch with Qtips. Another one did it with a chewed up cat toy.
Right now the weirdest thing one of my cats does is she runs on a mirror. She stands on her back legs and with her front legs she runs, like she's pawing at the mirror. I call it "kitty treadmill time".

The cat I had as a child played fetch. We had these little foam balls that i would throw for her and she'd bring them back. i don't know if its normal or not but there other cats out there that do fetch. I miss my kitty.

I've had many cats who would play fetch, its just a matter of teaching them as a kitten, and if they do it once, reinforce them positively and keep doing so. Of course, the first cat I ever had who played fetch, also liked to play a game we called "spin the kitty" where he'd get in one of our kitchen chairs that spun on its base and would beg us to spin the chair while he hung on to it for dear life. This was hilarious, he would get dizzy and fall off the chair, then jump back up and demand to go again. It sort of reminded me of the scrambler ride at the fair, lol.

that sounds adorable. right now, hes only about 4 months old, he's still exploring our place and his boundaries. the only problem he seems to have is scratching our poker tables (to my girlfriends annoyance).. beyond that, he's the perfect kitty

Yes, completely normal! Our tuxedo cat, Tubbles, loved to fetch aluminum foil balls, wads of paper, and rubber bands. He also liked us to pitch a balled-up piece of paper to him so he could swing with one paw and bat it back to us.
One word of caution: if by pony tails, you mean the elastic bands to tie hair back with, don't let him play with them when you aren't there. Hair ties, rubber bands, twist ties, all can be swallowed by a cat and cause an obstruction of their intestines. This can be fatal without emergency surgery.
He sounds like a great cat! Good luck and a long, happy life together for you both!

My cat izzy plays fetch with me sometimes. We used to play it every morning before I went to school. I think it is really cute when she does it.

oooh how cute and adorable, that your cat really has a thing for playing fetch. I dont know if its normal or not, but its definitely not common. It would be really wonderful if you could tape it, would love to watch it on youtube or something similar.
