I didn't know raisins and grapes were bad for dogs. We rarely give our dog table scraps so this information is new to me. Just never gave it any thought since all our dogs have eaten dog food. Am I the only fool that didn't know this information? lol http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/raisins.asp

I did not know that until recently and I saw it on TV. I told my sister in law about it and she said she used to give her dogs grapes, said they loved them and no more of that. I did know that chocolate and I think onions were bad for them. I guess animals are the same as us, one day something is good and the next they say it is bad for us. haha

No kidding. I sure didn't think grapes were bad for animals. I did know chocolate wasn't good for dogs to eat. Thanks for responding.

I had a wonderful dog, that just passed at 17...and he ate grapes almost on a daily basis, because I am a grape-aholic (grow my own, too, and prune them sothey are seedless.) I did not know about grapes, they didn't seem to cramp his lifestyle as 17 is getting on! He sure loved them!

I never heard that. I knew that babies/little kids can choke on them so you have to peel and/or cut them up first.

I rarely have either in the house so no chance the dog will get them. I did give our kids both but did cut them up as a precaution. Thanks for responding.

I didn't know that either. I always knew chocolate was bad for them. My pomeranian really does not eat his dog food unless we hand feed it to him. It scares me anymore with all of the recalls also. I hate to see him starve himself so he gets table food sometimes from us. Thanks for this information though.

Your welcome. I want my dog to be healthy for a long time but he also deserves a little treat here and there also. We have had our dog for 10 years now in August.

I did know this but not for many many years - same goes for kids. I always thought raisins were a great snak for kids: raisins come from grapes, grapes are fruit, fruit is good for you. NOT the sugar concentration is raisins is out of this world and they are sticky so stick to kids teeth - dentist say "No raisins for little ones".

Wouldn't take much for a younger child to choke on a raisin either. Thanks for responding.

Particularly if they put more than one at a time in their mouth because they do tend to stick together. I don't give kids or animals raisins anymore.

Yea I didn't know until I think I saw it on the news, and I checked it on snopes. This was after our dog had already eaten some raisin bread, but she is still young and vibrant so I think we were lucky. The kids know now not to give her or the cat any raisins or grapes. Tink

I didn't know that either. But I'm beginning to learn that a lot of "people" food is pretty hazardous for doggie's health.

People food isn't good for a dog. Maybe because of the fats or preservatives. Thanks for responding.

you are not supposed to give raisins to poultry either. I thought it was because they swell up in their system... I gave my baby boy raisins for finger food once and he had diarreah with grapes in it - because the raisins rehydrated!!! I did not know that grapes were bad for dogs though... also chocolate is deadly to them.

It's hard for little ones to digest raisins. After having kids I noticed the same problem your son had once upon a time..lol Not fun! Thanks for responding.

That is quite scary! None of my pets have ever attempted to eat raisins or grapes thank goodness! How sad for this dog and his owners. You are not the only fool who didn't know this. I just recently found out myself by doing some research on dog illnesses when Miko was alive and ill. That did pop up but I didn't really know to believe it. I knew chocolate can make a dog seriously ill, but didn't figure grapes!

I always understood never to give a dog chocolate but had no idea about grapes or raisins. Although my daughter has a Bassethound and she got ahold of Easter candy last year, all chocolate, and ate it all. She was "sicker than a dog." She lived through it and once it was out of her system, all was well. Thanks for responding.

I hadn't heard it either, then your topic came up and a lady at the store where I'm a guest vendor for a product also mentioned it. Until recently, I never thought about giving a dog fruit. But many dog and cat foods provide berries, esp. cranberries in them now. Take care and thanks for the topic, you probably saved some dogs.

Hopefully I saved a few dogs. That would make my day. The vet also told me to be sure the dog doesn't eat the cat food since it's terribly fattening to dogs. Thanks for responding.

I just recently received an email on this very topic myself. It really surprised me. from now on I will research before giving anything to my dog.

A good idea is to research dog foods or ask your vet. Our vet always advised us not to give our dog table scraps. I follow his advise. Thanks for responding.

Well I knew that I had heard somewhere tha if you give a dog grapes that whenever he swallows it it can swell inside their system and kill them or something like that(not sure if thats the way it goes or not its been along time since Ihave heard that)but I have actually fed my dog raisins before and what i didn't think about and i am a little embarrassed to say this but what I didnt think about is that raisins are actually just dried up grapes that have just been laying in the sun or something...yea another blonde moment lol

Don't feel all alone. I didn't think about it either. I thought raisins were dried up prunes or maybe it's the other way around. I really am a blonde so my brain is conforming to my hair color..lol Thanks for responding.
