Exercise Before or After Sleep?

Will exercising tire me out and make it easier for me to get good sleep, or will it give me more energy and keep me awake? Should I exercise before or after sleeping? Thanks

I think exercise should help you to sleep. In my eyes, appropriate exercise can made our body tired to help us to go to drem.So before the sleep is the best way. PS;have a good drem.o(n_n)o...

hehe That is a “either way” question. Just like "In the world, chicken first or egg frist".I hope you can understand my means.(I come from the China,my English is poor.)SO forget it. Just tell yourself:"who care about it,just sleep well that`s enough"... PS.Happy new year.

I see that you have both answers from a number of people. However, having studied sleep problems as well as exercise, I can give you the answer the doctors and researchers in both categories say. You should exercise after you wake up or sometime during the day. It should be three hours (or more) before bed time. Your body's natural response to exercise is to boost your metabolism and start burning calories. This gives you a boost in energy as your body does its thing. Exercise will make you more tired, but later on in the day, because you have done more and burned more calories. Hope this helps!

I think it actually depend on what time of the day that your energy level is at its peak. There are morning persons and night owls. So the morning persons are energetic in the morning so its advisable that they take their exercise during that time. As for those night owls like myself who is very energetic even during evenings, I take exercise in the evenings and it does make me sleep better and more quickly.

Well i work night shift, so I sleep during the day. But the treadmill is most likely going in my parents room, so I won't be able to exercise at night, because they'll be sleeping. But I can either exercise before I go to sleep or after, most the time anyways. I am trying to talk my mom into moving it down in the room with te computer.

It depends on your preference. But it is advisable to exercise before you sleep. If you do exercise after sleeping, be sure you are fully awake. Happy exercising!

Exercise does promote better sleep. Regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and give you a deeper more satisfying fulfilling sleep. A late afternoon workout would be best. The natural dip in body temperature 5-6 hours after exercising might help you fall asleep faster. Check out www.mayoclinic.com for more info on the benefits of sleep!

I think it varies greatly from person to person. I find that I'm at my best when I exercise in the morning as it tends to give me energy. This is really strange because I'm a night person and hate mornings. I really don't think I could sleep right after exercising myself.

I would say that exercising in the evening would make you more tired. I have more energy when I first get up but if I exercise first thing, I am too tired to do alot of other things that I need to get done for the day. It drains me.

Far better to exercise after sleeping, because it'll get your blood pumping and your heart rate up &, while you are physically tired, you body won't beable to rest properly. Wereas, if you exercise after you get up, it should actually start giving you energy, help wake you up and get you blood moving. The best would be to exercise say, about 4 hrs before bed....

Now this is a wonderful question because I go through periods of time when one works and then the other. Right now if I exercise early in the day, I'm done. Since my accident, I have zero reserves, so if I exercise and hour or two before bed that's perfict. Used to be, I gained strength from exercise and energy, so AM was the best because it really carried me through the day. Waking up and staying awake were hard without exercising. When I'm normal (and it can be sucessfully argued that I never am, but normal for me), sit ups and light weight lifting an hour or two before bed don't interfere with sleep, but aerobics like dancing, walking, and faster walking (my knees are anti-running, esp. now that I've hit the half century mark) would get my adrenaline too high for too long and I would not be able to sleep unless a few hours before and I had time for it to get used up. So the answer to me would be that it depends on you. It also depends on the type of exercise. Take care and good luck.

for me, i like to exercise before i go to sleep, just so i know i wont get interrupted. it doesn't keep me awake or make me sleepy, i just feel relaxed and peaceful. either time is fine, just not convenient for me.

That makes a lot of sense. I probably would most likely not get interupted exercising before I sleep too. Thanks for responding! =)

It depends on your state of body.If you have not been doing anything physical throughout the day then you wont get sleep at night generally. So,in that case an exercise would be a good choice so that your muscles do some work and get tired and you would get sleep. This works fine if you work out at night. But if you work out in the morning when your muscles are are fully ready for the day, it would definitely help you to keep active throughout the day and you would be able to sleep very well contrary to your fear. So it is the time of the day when you work out that determines everything.

Personally for me exercising before bed is okay as long as it isnt cardio. I might do crunches and and weights.Just before bed is okay. Cardio is best early to get the blood pumping. And maybe an afternoon walk to get you your second wind.
