Have you ever thought about renting from a rent a center or other rental store?

A company I do business with - rent a center

For years I've rented my computers from either Rent A Center or Colortyme (which the one I'm on now comes from). It does end up costing more in the long run but they will have a man at your house within hours if you have a problem with your pc and if he can't fix it they take it back and give you a loaner until it's fixed. Since you're paying for it they never let you go without it. In the last 30 or so years I've actually purchased 2 computers, a camcorder and a beautiful bedroom set from Rent A Center and have always been very happy with everything. Have you ever rented furniture or an appliance from a rental company such as Rent A Center, Colortyme or Rainbow Rental? If not would you consider doing it? If you have what were your experiences?

I am definelty a rent-a-center fan. It helps those of us who don't have the cash on hand have all the nice things they would like to purchase. The laptop im using now is from rent-a-center, the 34 inch flat screen tv and surround sound sitting in my great room is also from rent-a-center. I just recently purchased a new HP desktop from them- haven't taken it out of the box yet and had it a month ....lol...im getting to it. I have also bought a washer/dryer combo and stove from them. I appreciate thier services and you are absolutely right about anything that goes wrong- they have a man out to you in a heartbeat.

Amen to that! I definitley love thier personalized service for "good" customers like me (so they say when I walk in...lol). There have been times that they may not carry what I am looking for- and the manager is so cool that he actually goes out and finds them when they do thier purchasing! For instance I am writing to you on a Toshiba laptop with a 17' screen w/ cd/dvd burner. My first laptop from RAC was a toshiba- but only a 15 inch screen and no cd burner and I told him what I wanted- the next week he called me to tell me he found what I wanted and it was ready for pick-up or delivery- now how is that for service!

If you've had the desktop pc it must be paid for by now right? I've never had an appliance from them but they always seem to have the best in brand names.

Both the desktop pc and the stove are already paid for.

i have thought about it, but the only thing that bothers me is when they take the furniture back from people who could not pay for it, they then resale it. i am not comfortable with sitting on someone elses farts

lol.....you have to look around when you go into the stores because a lot of times they have brand new furniture that has never been rented before. That's another good part of it.

no, I have never been inside a rent-a-center. I don't know why exactly, I guess I just figured the prices were outrageous. It did not occur to me that they would have computers. I find this very interesting. So if you rent it for a month or two and bring it back to the store, will another person now rent the used computer? or are all rentals intended as rent to own?

They do hope you end up owning the item but there are times when people will rent only for a few months for whatever their reason may be. Most times the computer or whatever you are renting is brand new and never been rented before. Sometimes they have sales on things that have been previously rented and the monthly payments can be very cheap.

Yes, I rented a table and chair set. the chairs all fell apart about 1/2 way thru the agreement. I had already paid more for it than it was worth and so just finished the payments so at least I own it now. Now if I want something, I will just save aside the weekly payment and go out and buy it for far less than it would cost to rent. you could pay 600+ on a bed and then end up sleeping on the floor if you ran into financial problems.

If it fell apart didn't you call them? It's been my experience that they would give you another one in it's place if they could't fix it.

Before I got married to my husband he had a stereo thought a rent place. He made all the payments but by the time he made all of them he had basically paid for the stereo twice. I don't think I would do it again.

Oh, you are right there we do end up paying almost double the amount but depending on the item and if it ever needs to be serviced I've found it to be worth it. I could never come up with the money to buy a computer outright and my credit isn't that great either...lol...

I have mystery shopped some rental centers and have been suitably impressed. If I needed to I would rent from one, and if they had exactly what I wanted. It is also a good way to get a good mark on your credit. They do not report to the credit bureaus but they will give a letter of good standing if you need them to when you apply for credit elsewhere.

Good point. I've been trying to get them ON my credit report for years and for some reason it can't be done. It would definitely make mine look better since I have been doing business with them for years.

I would never do it. The price of the item ends up being way too much. There are times when I've been tempted becaue I really didn't have the money to buy something. I do my best to save up for something I want. So, no, I don't think I would do it, but, never say never.

I have personally not ever did that, but my son and his wife did,and they were very happy with all their purchases..They got a living room set and a big screen Tv and i believe some appliances..I think you might pay a little more but they are there to fix your computer if you have a problem and that within itsself is a big PLUS..It cost a lot of money to take your computer and have it fixed.i think that is a good way to get things for people who have not built up their credit or rather pay a small amount each month to pay for their items...I see nothing wrong with that,it seems that they are doing a good job for you..i did not really know that they rented computers, thats great...

A big screen is next on my list and believ me that's the only way I would ever be able to afford one. Being on Social Security it isn't very easy to put any money aside every month for big purchases.

I have never really thought about renting computers and furnishings from a store. Is it expensive to rent as opposed to purchasing an item yourself? hmmm might be a good way to go if you know you are only here for a short period of time i.e a year at the most!

Personally, I don't think the monthly payments are bad and it's especially a great idea if you will only have whatever it is for a certain period of time. That way you don't have to worry about moving it around.

I didn't go to RAC, there is a local rental store here which I have used to purchase my daughter's bedroom set, which I recently paid off, and my living room furniture. I went to the local place because after shopping around, their furniture was a better quality than RAC. My daughter's bedroom set is solid wood, not that fiber board garbage which seems to be the norm these days. It was my only option at the time, since she desparately needed a bed, and I am very pleased. Years ago I did rent a computer from RAC, but it was so costly and would have ended up costing me over 2 grand for it, so when I got my tax return I returned it and bought a computer for around $800.00. Since I had the available cash it was worth it, and I am still using the same computer. Renting things is a good option though for some people, we don't always have cash available to purchase things, and we don't use credit cards. Now I am working on paying my living room furniture off, one benefit is the low weekly payments, it's a lot easier than one big payment a month.

I bought a washer and dryer from Rent-a-Center a few years ago. It ended up costing more in the long run, but it was cheaper and more convenient than going to the laundry mat all the time.

It usually does help in the long run. I don't know if you ever had a problem with either of them but if you were to I'm sure they would have taken care of it right away.

My ex-roommate used to work there. He says they make the payments within that time frame you're given, equal to about twice the value of whatever the item is. And that is only if you make all the payments on time. If you take longer than the alotted time, then you end up paying up to three or four times the value! My ex-roommate also told me that people got away with stealing stuff pretty easily as well because rent-a-center has nothing to do with you're credit and they can't go to a collections agency or something weird like that, so all rent-a-center would do when someone just stopped making payments would be to write it off and ban them from the system. It was really weird...But it does not seem like a good system.

It could be that different stores have different policies. I know a man who was brought to court by a Rent A Center because he moved out of state and took his rented tv with him...he stopped paying them and they found him. Maybe some stores just don't care. Who knows.

Love your avatar!!! You are right about that. Renting is great when you need something fast and don't have the money right away. To me it's a great convenience.

I haven't used a rental service to get things for our household. I know many who have and found they were paying outrageous prices for items that if they saved up for could be purchased for much less. I would rather buy used and save for the new item we needed. We have purchased directly from Dell in the past and haven't had a problem with them. We will do the same if we need another one. My son has rented items from Rent a Center for many electronics that he has purchased. He prefers that method.

I have never done it, but did look into renting. The price you end up paying in the long run was to much for me to get items that way. I did consider a computer because my computer skills aren't the best; however, the added cost would mean my computer was going to cost to much more.

We've rented from Keller's here. It was a situation where we pretty much had to. We've gotten a deep freezer, a washer and dryer and a nice set of living room tables. We were going to get Hubby's pc from them but decided to just save up and get it. We did and are glad we didn't get back in with them. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I got my beautiful bedroom suit there and I also just bought a dryer from a rent a center. I paid cash for it and they only charged me $90 which was excellent as it looked new! We are currently buying a big screen tv and you are right about them fixing it if something breaks as we have had the tv fixed a couple of times due to different problems with it. I It does cost more but if it is the only way to get it,then I say it is worth it.

No they charge way to much if you really stop and add all that up when my friend got done paying for her fridge she could have bought a stove and maybe a washer too. Id rather put it on layaway or just buy it if I can.

No, I personally haven't although I do know of some people that have. My son's friends, two brothers, rented all their furniture from one of these places. It turned out to be a nightmare for them. Their washer and dryer went on the fritz long before they were paid off and they ended up paying for them and not having them working. They called the place and they were told too bad, it's your responsibility to get them fixed yourselves. They called the repair man and both of them, the motors blew. It wasn't worth fixing them, financially. So they were stuck paying for them for a couple more years and didn't have anything to show for it.
