well, everyone always asks the question - do you wash your hands after using the privy - my question is a little different.... do you wash your hands PRIOR to using the privy. I do - whenever I use a public restroom - because I have either been shopping or out and about doing things and I do not want dirty hands coming into contact with sensitive areas - not even my own. II sometimes do at home, depends on what I was doing just prior.

Guess I'm a little off track on the answer to this one! BUT I NEVER wash my hands in a Public Washroom. I carry pkges of "antiseptic" wipes in my purse or pocket. Public washrooms are not sanitary! You wash your hands, turn off the taps (dirty) with your clean hands, get paper towel from a dirty dispenser, dry your hands and then touch the filthy door knob to get out. When I am out of the washroom, I use my sanitary wipes & dispose of them in a zip-lock bag I carry in my purse or vehicle.

this is my routine if I must use a public br. I grab paper towel and wet and put soap on it - scrub the toilet, and then dry it, if I have purell in my purse I will apply some... after using the commode I do not use the first few squares of paper - but go beyond that a bit - when done I flush with a piece of the toilet paper instead of my hand - a foot sounds good but the poor people who might flush behind me will touch where my foot was... I turn the sink on after getting the towel ready to be torn off (pull lever thing) I then wash my hands with soap - I take the towel and turn off the water, I then take the towel and dispense the next dry towel for my hands - I then use that towel to open the door with, I hold the door with my foot and throw towel into receptacle. voila now I can go back to shopping and promptly place my clean hands on the filthy shopping cart handle. oy vey

Aha....but I have been caught with my pants down, literally speaking, too many times, the bathroom had not been serviced (lately) & towel dispenser empty. I don't leave home without my "handy-wipes." And you are so right, dirty shopping cart, then how about all that dirty money?

you are so right pergammano - and I always carry the handywipes when we are on a road trip - but stupidly do not always have them with me on a day to day basis. I ought to start because using wet toilet paper to clean the seat is not very efficient. hair dresser I do not usually even use the liners some places have available because they hang the dispenser right next to the commode and those industrial toilets will spray a fine mist several feet away! oh gross.

Oh wow, and I thought that I was the only one who washed PRIOR! Washing prior to using the toilet started for me while working at the hospital. Needless to say, almost everything at the hospital is contaminated. Even though nurses should be wearing gloves when touching obviously soiled areas on patients, there will always be those who don't follow this simple standard and therefore, most items (computers, phones, charts etc) when cultured have numerous bacteria. When I go to the restroom at the hospital, YES, I wash prior to using the toilet and then again after using the toilet! I surely do not want any of the methacillin restistant staph or any other superbugs that are going around to be placed on my body by my hands!

exactly! my son acquired an mrsi infection through his pic line which settled in his lungs - causing double pneumonia, he was so sick. then he was allergic to the ventamycin (sp) the infection was likely caused by improper washing of hands of either the doctor or a nurse.

Well, this is new. I have never washed my hand before using the bathroom but like everybody else, I do wash it after. I guess you are one in a million and I laud you for such consideration. Keep it up!

Yes most of the time. Especially in public. I do not like public toilets and don't use them any more then I have to. At home it depends on what I was doing....cooking or something then for sure!

That something I have not done. Well its kind of interesting and worth pondering. You have a point there. As what other usually do, its only after using and not before. Though, with your concept and thought right now, I might start doing so.

I never really thoguht about it like that...about being out in public and washing your hands before you use the bathroom...I mean i guess you make a good point about touching your private areas with your dirty hands(germs)but honestly I had never even thought about it...I would just go in...do my business..and then just wash my hands and then leave the restroom...

Huh... it's hard enough to get a guy to wash his hands aftwards (my wife makes SURE I do and I've pretty much gotten into the habit of it now) much less before. I can't say that I do before unless my hands are REALLY dirty and I wash throughout the day so it is very rare they are that bad. Thanks Zelo

Wow, that is something I never thought of, but you definitely do make a point there. I will have to reconsider.

Yes, like you, I always wash my hands, if I am go for privy. To maintain hygine, it is always better to wash the hands, because so many invisible germs get attached to our skin and we do not come to know.

I do also because when you are out shopping you have your hands on the shopping cart and I have often wondered how many people before me have used the shopping cart I am using. As bad as it sounds we know that not everyone washes their hands after using the toilet. I also want my sensitive areas protected and not catch something because my hands were on a shopping cart and maybe the person before me or any number of persons who used the cart before me had not washed their hands and figure how many germs are on that one handle of that shopping cart. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Well, well, well .. just like everyone else, I've never thought of washing my hands before using a public comfort room. Besides, I always have my wet tissue pack in my hand bag to wipe my private parts, so basically, I never let my bare hands touch any of my sensitive parts. I ALWAYS wash my hands after (of course) and as a force of habit, I also wipe my hands with wet tissue or alcogel.

I don't think to do that on a regular bases but I have to admit there are times I do think about it and do so. You make me think what a great idea though to make it a habbit just as we do with washing our hands after we go to the bathroom. Thanks for that Modestah!
