I Really Don't Believe This! Here Comes A Rant....

A few months ago, I posted a discussion where I had an unauthorized deduction from my checking account from the Disney Movie Club for $38.90 and naturally freaked out. This automatic deduction from my account by them was NOT authorized and when I kept looking at my account at Disney showed no reflection of WHAT was being deducted. So naturally I got in touch with my bank about this charge...They, the bank, sent me forms to fill out to make a claim about this unauthorized charge, which of course I filled out right away and sent back to them. You can see the discussion here of my original ranting... http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1370573.aspx Okay so in the meantime while trying to get this settled, I got the DVDs in question that I didn't order...sent them back pronto...About a week later I get an email from Disney saying they got the DVDs back and were crediting my account...and sure enough on January 25, 2008 the $38.90 was credited and posted on my checking account. Okay zoom up to today. These past few months have quite frankly sucked for me money wise..one of my financial sources for making extra money has fizzled out (I write articles for a company...no not Associated Content, but another)...there haven't been any assigned articles for me to write. So no extra green stuff. Since I'm on SSI disability I'm VERY careful with my money and am good at accounting for every penny...With the funds I had left over, I had enough to pay a little on my electric and gas bill this month, but not the full amount, and of which I just recently sent so they haven't gone through yet, plus I figured I had a few bucks left over for cash expenses. So I went to my bank today to withdraw $20...I get a notice to say that if I withdraw this amount it will result in an over-draft..Like WHAT?????? So when I got home, I checked in on my bank account...and...my bank deducted the amount again! Saying "reverse" credit in THEIR favor. WHY?? In the meantime I'm freaking out here, as like I said I only just mailed off my electric and gas bill, which now means when they go through will bounce and I'll be charged the bounce check fees..and since I couldn't take out that badly needed $20 I wanted to do today, I now have exactly $2 and some change I'm so furious...uh, to put it mildly....I did just email my bank again...and plan to go to the bank personally tomorrow...but this really sucks big time Okay to make this a discussion...did you ever have something similar like this happen? You thought something was settled months ago, and then wham you get hit with the same problem and you KNOW it's not your fault but the fault of say, your bank?

Actually it's not the fault of Disney this time but my stupid band who made the deduction--I found the email to me from Disney telling me they were crediting the money back to me,...then did a back track of my checking account as proof that the money WAS credited to me and printed everything up...even did a hunt for the original bank claim forms I had filled out..so have all these papers as proof that the money was credited to me and storming over to my bank tomorrow

Something similar happened to me a number of years ago, I had a direct Debit for £4.90, which the bank made a mistake and charged £49.00, tried to reverse it but charged another £49.00, then charged the original £4.90, then repaid the 2 lots of £49.00, however as my account showed deductions of £102.90 (even for a couple of minutes), this put me in the red so they charged me £10 for being overdrawn, even though it was their mistake. I did get the charge refunded, but had to go to the bank with my statement before they would consider it.

this reminds me of last Christmas when I depostied a hundred dollar check and my bank of america credited me with ten dollars instead and when I called the bank to protest she asked if I wanted to make out a complaint and blah blah blah fill out forms we will send you and blah blah I was furious but finally\ said send me the form. it took ten days to get the bank to go over my account and admit they had made a ninety dollar error at first the girl said we do not make errors and I said well you did this time and I am not going to let you get away with it. I did finally get it resolved and the lady who at last helped me could not have been kinder but allthe rigamorale I had to go through was enough to make me want to change banks.

To both Eskimo and Hatley Gee banks just love making mistakes don't they, such as adding an extra zero for a deduction, or as in your case Hatley not adding a zero so instead of a hundred only credited you with $10. Eskimo..did they ever re-emburse you for the over draft fees? They should have since it was their error not yours.

If I believed in luck, I'd say you have had some that was crappy. When you get back in touch with Disney, can you explain it in a way that shows them their second error, therefore 'making' them pay any over draft dues if any occur? Or is really and truly the bank? It would be easier to ream the bank if it was there fault, wouldn't it? Not that any of it is any less aggravating.

I just went through this once again. My paycheck is direct deposit and I have one payment through bill pay every week to the gas company or I don't have heat. After all was said and done I had a big $14 left from my paycheck. On top of that I have been very sick the last two days and could have used some medicine, but I don't dare even try to get it. Check your account because if the bank credited it back to you and Disney also gave you a credit then the bank will obviously take their money back. I would also ask your bank if you can either block the Disney Club from making charges or change your account number. When Disney did that to me I changed my account and wrote a letter to the BBB to let them know about the poor business practices. I am at present writing a letter to complain about my banks poor business practices. I have to wait to finish it because I have not been up to my usual writing elegance because I have been sick. It will get done though, and the title of that one is going to be How banking institutions hold low and middle income people hostage.

Sorry to hear you've been sick sumofalltears...these past two months money wise have been winners..I spent a bit of money last month getting some medicine type stuff for my kitty...he's better now, but yikes I spent more on him than I ever do for myself for any kind of meds I plan to go to my bank tomorrow...I have all kinds of printed proof of the credited amount in my favor...oh and yes, the title of that is great..as banks do hold us hostage. Yes and I'll ask if the bank can put a block on Disney..uh, but don't they charge a fee for that? I remember there was something..a stop payment for a check...this company hadn't put a check through in ages..and I didn't want them to surprise me one day by deducting whenever they felt like it and the fee was $35

I had to change my debit card number because a lotto company had made an unauthorized withdrawal from my online banking account I did get them to return the money and the bank to drop an overdraft charge so I had my bank put a stop to them trying to use my account and finally just had them change my debit card number completely. that lotto company had scammed a lot of people I found out afterwards.

I have had a situation that I thought had been settled and then found out it hadn't been settled but it wasn't with a bank account. I was in a car accident in 2006, a passenger in another person's car, and the person driving the car I was in was not at fault. We were making a left hand turn and someone from behind hit us at 55mph. We all had to go to the hospital for a general check-up to make sure that none of us were injured. Well the lady who ran into us gave the police department fake information regarding her real name and real insurance. So now we were all stuck with these hospital bills that were around $900 due to x-rays and some asprin they gave us for whiplash. We were furious to say the least, we called up the insurance company and demanded that it be paid for. They told us that the woman wasn't even covered by their insurance and never was and didn't know who I was talking about. At the time of the accident I had been at college which is 4 states away from where I lived when college was out. I didn't find out that none of the charges had been paid until almost a year later from the date of the accident. So I am at home calling another state trying to get things worked out, the police department said I would have to come to the police station to get the police report and I told them I was states away and that it was impossible for me to come in person. After making at least 30 calls I ended up calling my insurance company who then paid for the cost of the medical bills and called up the other insurance threatening to sue them. Overall it ended up ok because they then gave me $250 not to sue them. I would complain again to Disney, generally companies will work with you - especially if you have the proof that they said they credited your account and then retook it without product, you could potentially sue them and most companies would rather give back the $40 than be sued for $1 million.

Banks are problems! Ok I haven't had the same problem as you but other banking issues. Here's a synopsis: 1 - For 18 years I was under a joint account with my mom. For years when I was working and going to school, I would deposit checks and get money out. 2 - One day, I go to get money out, and they say I CAN'T b/c it's a trust fund! I say "what??? My checks are directly deposited into this account. MY CHECKS in MY NAME" They said they couldn't do anything about it til my mom came in. 3 - My mom and I go in and change it to a joint account (which it always was! I don't know where this trust fund crap came from) We made me the primary and her the secondary. I signed twice as many forms b/c I was the primary 4 - But of course, the stupid bank put her down as primary, so a few years ago when I was getting ready to move out and wanted to take her name off of it, they made another huge deal. She came down, and we had the accounts changed to my name only. That was in April 2006. 5 - May 2007, I had a name change due to marriage, went to the bank and they said I was all set 6 - I get 3 separate tax statements in the mail this January 2008 with different accounts on each. The first has my new name and address. The second has my OLD name and address. The third has my old name and address and MY MOM'S Social security number. Hello??? I can almost understand the naming issue, but I took her off 2 years ago and you're still associating her number with my accounts? 7 - I put a sticky on each pointing to the wrong and the correct info, scanned them all in, and sent to my banking online customer service. They quickly replied it had been fixed and they would send me new tax statements 8 - New tax statements came, and they are stilllllll wrong! Still in my old name, still coming in separate statements instead of being linked. Well, I paid my taxes already and accounted for all of my accounts, so I'm just gonna wait and see what happens next year. It just seems like banks do things so haphazardly that stuff like this goes wrong a lot. You're not the only one with banking issues :)

Yes... I know what you mean... life suck big time when you are short of money... and you have people screwing you on the top of it. What I have always done in order to prevent this happening is... that I do not allow anyone to debit my account automatically... no matter what. I will simply not deal with a company who insist on doing so. That way... I am in full control... and those things cannot happen. I pay everyone each month... when I am good and ready... and only when I have the money to do so.

Fortunately some time ago, I had Disney stop making any further automatic deductions by canceling out my card info. I always pay either on-line to the companies or send a check...the only one that makes auto deductions is my DSL service...they are kind of insistent about that...there kind of a bunch of smucks too...Verizon..yeesh

I've been through so many stupid things like this due to someone else's stupid mistake I could write a stupid book! (Sorry about the overuse of "stupid" here, but it really gets me going...lol) I've had double charges on my CC for airline tickets that I wasn't aware of until I was at the airport on the way to Florida and my CC was declined. I've had double mortgage payments taken out of my checking account, which of course resulted in other checks bouncing. I discovered my checking account had been debited for my father-in-law's phone bill. I had my phone disconnected because the check payment I'd made hadn't reached them in time so when I withdrew the money and sent them cash via Western Union they still attempted to cash the check, resulting in a NSF charge for me then successfully debited my account, although the bill had been paid in cash. Then, they wanted to simply credit my account instead of giving me the money back. I'm still fighting that one. The disgusting thing is, when someone wants our money they want it yesterday; if we make a mistake, we'd better correct it within seconds. However, if the bank, CC company, airlines, phone company or any other place like that makes a mistake we're supposed to be patient and wait for however long it takes for them to find and correct their STUPID mistake. If it causes us all kinds of grief and financial problems, that's too bad, I guess, because were just the STUPID CUSTOMER who used to always be right! I sure hope they straighten this out for you soon, Pye, because I know what you're going through having some money "shortages" myself these days but I hate to say it, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Good luck and don't back down. Annie

I can't agree with you more that if some company or organization wants our money they want it last week. I had done that other discussion too, where I received a tax earned income credit refund that was my mother's but because I'm her personal representative am entitled to...the jerks at the IRS made the check out wrong and had to send it back...I'm STILL waiting for the newly and correctly made check..but then the IRS is so swift in refunds...another place that if you owe them money they want it pronto

Things like this happen much too often, pyewacket. I recently went through a similar hassle with my financial institution. In my opinion, Banks are pure evil. They will deny to the end that they ever make a mistake! If it wasn't for being able to cash my checks free of charge I don't think I would have anything to do with them. I hope you will get everything straightened out with them but I guarantee it will take a lot of luck.

Bank - They can screw up too! After all, it's run by humans!
I pray that you were able to straighten it out Pye. It's hard enough to be on disability which is so little to live off of as it is and to have some company take such liberties with your account is a no no. I'd be giving them a call from hell if I were you.

Hi Pye, It sounds as if Disney billed you again, since your bank did a reverse credit. I don't understand how a bank can do this without someone wanting money, which in this case would be Disney. I don't think they can just authorize a deduction like that for no reason. How confusing. Maybe you can call your electric and gas company and explain what is happening, after all, you do have proof. I feel so bad for you Pye.

Nope did call Disney and it's not their end of it...they had removed my card info...in fact just confirmed this to make sure by looking at their website and my info there was deleted as far as card info. No I don't think calling the gas/electric will help...that's even more frustrating all you ever get is one of those Menu things..press 1 for this, press 2 for that...never get a real person..that's why I emailed them...and got that "nice" response back from the gas company...NOT

Good grief! Your bank is STILL messing you up on this? Something doesn't sound right there. It sounds like someone at the bank has made a major error, and that person needs to get things straightened out for you immediately. I hope you give them a piece of your mind when you go to visit them in the morning hon. I've canceled most of my accounts that try to automatically debit my account. If I can't send them a money order or something along that line, I don't have anything to do with them. Good luck with all of this sweetie.

I've never actually had this happen to me thankfully. I'm really careful about the places I allow access to my checking account with. I don't use it with anything strange that could possibly deduct random balances from my account. I do try to check my account balances frequently so I know what's going on just in case something like this would happen again.

One of the reasons I either pay my bills on-line or send a check is precisely due to the fact I don't want some deductions to come out I didn't authorize..so I don't like the automatic deductions monthly for my bills..I rather wait to make sure the money is in my account...and glad I did as one time the bank was late in posting my SSI money in...it should have been in the first of the month, but wasn't credited to my account until the third. If I had automatic deductions that would have caused real problems

Hi black cat, sorry to hear about this. Can Bunny be of any help to you? I had this situation with my mobile company that went for 5 years. I was their regular and loyal subscribers for 2 years and then one day, I received my monthly billing statement. I was befuddled to see that they charged me $125 for International text messages alone. I personally went to different branches of the company, talked to about a hundred customer service staff (no kidding here), wrote a letter of dispute and yet, nobody deigned it important enough to help me settle the problem. I refused to pay the questionable bills unless they gave me a valid reason. Before I know it, I received a letter of Attorney demanding payment. To make the story short, I kept receiving Legal letter every year and I need to keep on explaining to them about the real score. Thankfully, I didn't receive any more of those letter last year and hopefully forever.

Can't help wonder if that $125 was some scam thing...Some months ago, I all of a sudden got a really high charge on my phone bill from some company I never contacted or used..many times these scammers get hold of your phone number if say you sign up on something on-line...then sure enough the scam company gets hold of the phone number and makes outragish charges on phone bills..the charges made on my account were a few hundred! I did finally get it settled and was credited...also...many of these collection agencies are also scams themselves

YES!!! Oh, yes, Pyewacket. You've no idea the horros that I have suffered as a result of a bad bank...well, let me tell you about it so that others are not roped in and taken advantage of like I was: Hubby and I decided it was time for a new account, due to the fact that our internet business was having a major dispute with a customer that we just did not want to pay. We attempted toclose out account, but the bank told us that while we were in a "dispute" over electronic undsm, we could not close the account. This is basically a poopoo from the bank, who refuses to take action. So now I will have either an account open forever, or I will be forced to pay the disputed amount, and never get my money back. But that's not the worst part. We went to another bank "Washington Mutual", who said that they could handle small business accounts, had insurance for electronic fund disputes, and excellent customer service as well as electronic banking, all for free. We were extatic. We got our personal and busincess accounts, set ourselves up to do everything (and more) than we had at our previous bank, and began doing business. The first week we got an email from the bank manager: we had overdrawn our personal account. No, we said, we had checked online and had enough money to cover our grocery and rent bills. No, said the manager, you over drew on it, and now we had to pay several charges of $26 per day until the amount was returned to the bank. We went into thebank, told the manager that the website did not reflect the correct balance, had the charges taken off, fixed the account balance, and left. Next day, the account was overdrawn again. We had fits, of cousrse. What could be wrong now? Well, it seems, as we learned the next day while visiting the bank manager again: there was no "stop payment" on the account when we reached zero balance. In otherowrds, they were giving us carte blanche to spend anything, so long as we deposited the money to cover it before the end of the business day, in cash. What?! The website was never up-to-date - infact, it was two days behind most of our purchases, so there was no way to tell other than to keep an old-fashioned bank book (no good for two people sharing two accounts). We had the charges removed again, and told the manager to put a stop payment on the account when it hit zero. That way, we've never be charged like this again. In between, we suffered greatly due to lack of finacnes, lack of budgeting, and lost work hours. THen came the real blow: the same thing had happened to our business account. We freaked out, went back to the bank, and closed our accounts. We were heartbroken. Not only had the bank ruined our small business, but they had put us in the hole to the point where we couldn't crawl out. The manager appologized and said, well, if you'd like, we can add credit insurance for both accounts, for a price of...OH MGD. So the lesson is, no matterif it's free or not, don't take itunless you ask a few people about it first. get some reviews. Don't justget a credit card or a bank account with any bank. Some are our there to defraud you with kindness. As a result of Washington Mutual's fraud, we had to move out of our apt, get a much smaller one, live with Mom for a month, live with sis a month, give away our cats to relatives and then have to relocate all of them, be jobless with no prospects, and even starve. I cannot express the hardship that I have gone through this past summer, all because a bank decided it knew what was good for me and didn't deign to even ask me before acting on my behalf.

Thank goodness I don't have hassles anymore with credit cards anymore..got rid of them...My bank is a good one though, at least it's one of the top three...My one friend was telling me I should switch banks and get an account with Washington Mutual (WaMu)..there's one near me too, but yikes..read what Darling Girl wrote here..and her horror story...makes my problem seem really small compared to hers
