Actually i prefer to go to both and find great deals at all of them..I used to work at an antique store and learned how to spot the great deals..when it comes to clothes..I love thrift stores since people have a tendency to throw out great stuff..which becomes my treasures. So off to shop i go!LOL

There is an old saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure", and that is so very true.. I prefer both of them as everyone in an antique mall isn't as knowledgeable as they should be.. Some people just sell what they think is older or antiques, but they do not always know the true value of the item, so you can still find good bargains in an antique mall.. But on the other hand, thrift store worker sometimes think that something is old or an antique and they also put a very high price on it.. They do not know about antiques, someone might have told them, "Hey, that is old" and then they put a very high price on it.. You are going to find bargains everywhere, someone might just want to get rid of "that old outdated dress", someone else is looking for vintage, retro clothing and then you get a great deal on the dress.. I have sold on ebay for quite a few years, 1599 feedbacks, before I got tired of it an quit.. I have bought items at yard sales for 2.00 and sold it for 100.00, I can give so many examples of items which are put out for almost next to nothing at yard sales and then sold for really good money by someone else.. So back to your question, I believe that I would pass up an antique or thrift store in favor of a yard sale anyday.. But of the ones which you ask about, I believe that I would go to the thrift store first.. HAPPY hUNTING, dONNA

antique stores to me are like museums beautiful to look at but usually pricey everytime I go to a thrift store it's like a mini adventure you can find some very high end items in thrift stores for a fraction of the price especially when the stores dont know what they are selling lol I personally am a thriftstoreaholic lol

Jasonwallace. I am with you. Thrift store shopping can become very addicting. Just reading and posting to this discussion is making me want to go thrift storing, as we call it. And antique stores are wonderful but as you said too pricey. What is great if you can find a small town with a thrift store there, a lot of times they will have some really great antiques also. Happy Hunting to you.

Actually I like both. I have found some great deals in thrift shops, especially those that are run by charities. I go often to antique shows that are events in a nearby mall but I have rarely bought anything. I find some items are really overpriced. I found the best deal in little hole in the wall shops that are totally jumbled and sell a mixture of antiques and junk. I found a great chandelier for my dining room, not antique but practically brand new for $ 60. It looks great. Sometimes though I have no luck. I went by this narrow totally jumbled shop at least once a week for about two months. It was always closed but I had my eye on a little metal wind-up duck (a small toy.) Finally last Saturday the store was open, but you can't really walk into it it is so packed. The owener was outside putting stuff on disply on the sidewalk. I told him I was interested in that little duck. Immediately he said that it was a collector's item made in Germany and it would be $ 30. I would happily have paid $ 15 but I left. I bet you this little duck will sit there for a long time to come.

Hi Lindalinda Just goes to show that some people have high prices on things that they think will fly out the door and it sits there forever..just wait maybe if you are meant to have it..it still will be there

I love looking around in the charity shops, you can find some wonderful bargains and some real treasures too. I have found some great vintage clothes in my town, purely by chance in the back of a local charity shop. I can't afford antiques but I can happily indulge in the charity shop

I love browsing both. You never know what treasures you will find. My mother gave me part of her china collection which can be found at the antique shops. We sometimes find great birthday gifts there also. A sister in law loves western style things and there is always something cast iron that will fit right in with her decor. Also, we love old knives and swords. We even bought some college memorabelia for my mother in law. Have a blast Rose.

I like to browse thrift stores because I don't usually need to buy antiques. But, at thrift stores, they have things that I can use everyday. I don't really buy a whole lot, there, though. But, sometimes, I can't resist buying something there. I also donate to thrift stores, too.

Either one.. Add flea markets, swap shops, yard sales, and sidewalk sales to the list. If I come across a good deal or see something unique, it's mine. LOL! I've come across so many treasures that way. You're right, people do donate/get rid of awesome stuff, especially when they're moving and dumping their entire houses into thrift stores around here.

I love both types of stores. I also have found great furniture and other items at estate sales, consignment shops and some garage sales (if I'm there REALLY early.)
