A hamburger and a shake: The American 1950's Food of choice

When ever I watch a movie about the 1950's and teenagers, even tv series like Happy Days, the teenagers are sitting down eating hamburgers and ordering milkshakes to go with them. Here in Canada I don't think that combination was ever popular. Just the thought for me of grease and milk combined in one meal, I would imagine would curdle the stomach. Here in Quebec it has always been hamburgers and french fries, grease and more grease lol. Did you have the burgers and shakes as a teenager? What do you prefer shakes or fries? or if neither is preferable to you, what do you prefer to eat with your hamburgers?

When ever I went out for a burger, it was always burger, fries and swamp water (a mixture of different pop)..I don't eat this food that much any more..But when I do I still go for the burger and fries, no more swamp water ewww it makes me wonder how I drank it when I was a kid! I don't care for milkshakes at all..

Once a week my brother and I would go to town at the one diner with our dates and have hamburgers, french fries and a milkshake. I didn't go on dates without at least 1 brother. Most people on the board think its old-fashioned, but teenagers didn't get pregnant in my area unless they married young. Its sure a lot different today; however, my daughters couldn't date without another couple when they were teenagers. I still believe its better to wait for the right man.

I recall as a teen we would visit the local A & W drive in with the waitresses on roller skates and the jukebox blaring Chuck Berry or Elvis tunes. Cheeseburgers and coney island hotdogs were the mainstay it seemd back then. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Yes, I did even in the sixties. My boyfriend at the time and I would go to the A&W drive through, The Dairy Queen or Harveys and have a burger, fries, onion rings (we shared an order of those) and a thick milkshake. The Dairy Queen was the best, it had a brazier burger, oh it was so good and the milk shake was the best. If I ate anything like this now I am sure I would die on the spot. I find that burgers and fries are still popular in Quebec and poutine gets ever more fancy. For those who are strangers to poutine, those are french fries with cheese curds drenched in brown gravy. You can even get it in Toronto at Union station. Needless to say I don't eat anything like this now. I am into frugal healthy living with lots of veggies and salad, very rarely fast food.

I liked burger and soda, sometimes fries I never cared for most shakes if they weren't good shakes at an ice cream place and then not with food.

We had this all of the time. My mom and dad would take us out to eat and we would order a hamburger, fries and a milkshake or a soft drink. It all depended on what we wanted at the time. My mom would also fix us those types of foods at home also. I used to lve to eat that stuff. I have not really ate a whole lot of it as an adult though. that is just way too much on my stomach at once.

I always order chicken sandwiches at fast food places. At Wendy's I do order a small Frosty to dip my fries in though! My husband thought it was repulsive until he tried it!

I am not a burger person although I did try one the other day when I was out and had that with fries but when my friends used to go to a certain burger bar I would always have a thick milkshake whilst they were eating and found that filled me up just as much as a burger and fries would have done. As I am not too keen on burgers my answer would have to be just a shake on its own. Ellie :D

Oh yes, burgers and fries, yum yum! When I was a teenager, every saturday without fail me and my friends would go shopping with our pocket money and indulge in either a portion of chips (fries) or macdonalds and have burger, fries and a coke. We never did milkshake. I still do like a burger and fries if I go out, of course now it is only an occasional treat when we can afford and not every weekend but it still tastes just as good as it did back then!

I agree grease and milk doesn't seem like a combination I'd want my stomach to contend with, I'll take the grease with grease please lol but seriously tho one day I might just try it and see why all these good people loved it so much. Besides I'm sure some people would be turned off by Quebecs poutines I mean grease with milk and sauce for good measure. I guess thinking about it now that is hardly different ... something to think about.

we never had a dairy queen brazier burger yet, and we could get the milk shake right there as well. But it just seems too filling and it would probably make me sick, but poutine and a hamburger doesn't

Well I must say I am a grease and grease girl myself,Could be why I am almost as wide as I am tall..Never was into drinking milkshakes with my burgers. I love a big mac and fries it is just so good and tasty but also fattening as all get out. So I doon't have it very often once every few months maybe. Love Happy Days and the movie Grease is one of mine,my moms and little sisters favorite movies.

Ugh, your making me hungry. I could go for a fully loaded burger right about now. It doesn't matter when I have a milkshake it doesn't settle to well with my stomach. So I would have to say I prefer fries over a shake. I love the fries to be hot lightly sprinkled with salt. We place our fries on paper towels before serving them to the kids. I love fries, but don't like the greasy taste. Growing up hamburgers and fries was something my mom didn't make a lot of it.

I think that hamburger and fries is a natural combination - for a beverage I think most (at least these days) go for a cola... I usually just have water. I do like a shake, but it is usually filling and I treat it as a meal or between meal pick me up when I do have one.

I eat hamburgers with coke. I have not tried it with milk and other beverages. Oh well, I tried it though with ice tea. Here in our country hamburger, french fries and coke are the best combination we have for the hamburgers. I think it is still. Although not very healthy.

I like shakes well enough but if I am easting hamburger then I prefer to have some fries. But if I really want to make my meal then I will switch out the fries for some onion rings.
