Do you depend on the internet, or do you think you could live without it?

How do you feel about the internet? something you can't live without? OR can you say that if the internet was taken away from us tomorrow it wouldn't bother you? Personally I've been using the internet now for a long time. I still remember the old bulletin board systems we used to use with our dial up modems, remember those days? I could not at this point go back to not having the internet since day one I was impressed by it, sometimes even scared of it. It's gotten so much more vast in it's diversity and usefulness since the early days. Nowadays everyone is on the net, could you give it up? why or why not?

Well, I definitely need the internet to work~! I list stuff on eBay & so does my wife plus I'm also in the IT line - need to download & update stuff as a system builder ;) Going back to dial-up is really unbearable. Even going back to computers that are slower than my current 1 is also requires much patience. I guess I'm spoilt in a way :Þ

I think we have all been spoiled in one way or another due to technological advancement. I definitely agree dial up is a good option anymore, and I've never seen someone buy a fast computer then buy a slower one to replace it, so I agree with that too not an option. Good luck with your ebay listings and your work, I hope you never lose the Internet.

It would be impossible for me to give it up, I depend too much on it. I live in a small, provincial town in the south of Mexico, and I am a freelance language teacher. Now, I´m pretty good at it, but still, I do depend on the local economy. What happens if the market for some reason dries up? So the Internet gives me the opportunity to develop alternatives through online businesses and marketing. That's one thing. The other one, and probably more important one, is that it has became such an integral part of my life by now that I would feel a great loss should it disappear. I used to have problems with boredom, for example. But that was before the internet, and they are gone. I don´t like to watch movies, for example (I feel you have to go through 5 movies to see one good-one), so the Internet even takes up the recreational part of my life. (Just look at what we´re doing her, my fellow-myLoters...)

Well I depend on the internet for various activities. For example: paying bills, making money, getting directions, getting information about a business, information and knowledge about a subject, and many others. But I can live without it. It would just be hard. Like getting information on a business, I would have to get the number of a phonebook or 411 and call and ask questions. To get information on a subject I woukd have to waste gas and go to the library. Same with paying bills gotta go in person. I could give it up, anyone could do anything, but I would choose not to because it would just make everything more complicated and harder.

Yeah it would suck going back to the old ways of doing things. I guess anyone can do anything if they had to, hopefully it never comes to losing the Internet tho. It would be more complicated and time / resource consuming to do so. Good luck to you thank you for responding.

I depend on the internet right now and I know for sure I could not live without it. I earn my income online and I have to have my internet here at home to be able to do it. I would be lost if I was forced to go back out in this cold world to work again. I could give up the internet if we were more financially stable though. I would not use it as often for sure.

Hello there, I think everyone lives off the internet and breathes the internet, LOLz. The internet is the first thing I look for at home, at work and in fact anywhere and everywhere. I just couldn't function properly for the day if I don't log in. Even if it means just checking my email and then going out, I have to. The internet has become a necessity for me and I can't live without it; well not literally of course, but my life will certainly become bleak and dull. I am in fact going to save money to purchase the more high-tech laptop for my usage. A high powered one; I'm thinking the lines of COMPAQ OR HP. And put on a faster broadband connection because this one's getting slow, LOLz. And the internet has become a part of my life now that I'm addicted to mylot some-more..have a nice day there..;)

If my internet connection does not work for whatever reason then I am so miserable it is unbelievable. Its funny but I do not realise how much I love it until something happens and I cannot get on it! If I had to do without it then I would, but I would be miserable for a very long time and would miss it dreadfully, it is such a big part of my life now.

If I had to, I could but, there would be a withdrawal period and, I might need a little bit of rehab. Not as bas as others I know. I actually can get through a day without getting on the internet. In fact, until about a month and a half ago or so, I would go every single weekend without getting online. But, then I bought myself a laptop and, things have gone down hill since then. Now, when I am home, if I am sitting on the couch watching tv, if I think of something I need to look up, it is within arms reach. But, I grew up without computers. I only really learned how to use them around 8 or so years ago and, have really only gotten more in need of them over the past 2 years. But, if I couldn't have a computer anymore, after a little bit of withdrawal, I suppose I could survive. Just don't take my Tivo away! LOL!

Yes I remember those days when Dail-Up was the only way to the internet. You get booted off because of a phone call or not able to use the phone if you are online. I really don't miss those days though! I love my cable internet! I would really miss not haveing the internet. I could live without it though. I did it before like 3 months. I just have to call more people instead of sending an email or a message on Myspace. The internet is a big part of my everyday life, but I will find ways to deal with be able to use it!

I agree cable Internet is where it's at, I remember days before the Internet... when it was a big deal that some computers could accept connections from as many as 4 other computers, when most computers at the time could only accept one. And you had to call the computer directly not an ISP and it was not world wide but city wide unless you wanted to pay long distance for the call. Thank you for the response.

I depend on the internet to make my living since I have an online business, but even I didn't have a business on line, I would still go nuts if it were taken away. I am sure I could live, but I might be forced to do other things like clean my house till it sparkles, or lose some weight.

I absolutely think I would be lost without the internet. Yesterday my internet, cable (tv) and phone (voip) went down and was down nearly the entire day. What a complete pain in the butt! This isn't to say I did not enjoy my day, it was a great excuse to get outside, visit friends, etc etc but it really brings home how interdependent we are on technology we use every day and therefore probably take for granted. As an aside, I spent a lot of time on my cell, both talking and texting, have to find a way to keep in touch! When I worked for an employer, we were dependent on - what do you know - a computer network, employer intranet, web access, a phone system, and records/info only available on those systems. Without those and free and uninterrupted access to those, I couldn't work. I have made a lot of connections, friendships, and communicate freely and regularly with the use of internet. I would say that I depend on it, almost in the same way I depend on other 'essentials' such as running water, plumbing, electricity, heat. Supply does indeed meet demand, think of decades ago when a bathroom inside a home was a big deal. Now if you don't have at least one normal bathroom in your home, and you live in the year 2008 in a civilized society, there is something wrong. I believe the internet will continue to be a large part of our personal and professional lives and somewhere down the line, folks will be considered crazy or depriving themselves for not being a part.

i think i'll be able to literally live without the net. I mean clothes, food, shelter, water, money and (of course) God are all what we need to live. But it's a fact that most of the work we do today are dependent on computers and its networks. The convinience of using it and the great capacity of works it does are still undeniable.

As much as I rely on the Net for several things I could definately live without it...but I didnt grow up with it like the younger crowd..I mean I didnt have my own computer and at home internet til I was in my mid/late 20s so its not like I've always had it ya know....Sure beign here in the U.S it would be a bit of a pain when it comes to banking for example but i dont do alot of banking with my account back home anyway so I'd manage...it just wouldnt be as convinient..I could live without it though no problem

I do depend on the internet - though, I certainly can live without it. Infact I did live with out it for 30+ years :) I still have dial-up so I recall THOSE days quite well, hehe. I remember having to scroll on a chat forum, though. I used to frequent the M I R C channels.

Sure, I could give it up. We would all just go back to looking things up in the yellow pages, dictionary, encyclopedias, etc. I lived over half my life without it, and I could do it again. It is a thing of convenience, not a necessity of life.

I agree, but I do think it is a necessity for some people, my mother for example in her condition would have no income if it was not for the Internet as she can barely leave the house when it's absolutely needed for her to do so. Thanks for your response.
