I bought some the other day and it tasted horrible. Is that stuff for people to eat? My god, if I had a pet rabbit, he could have all of it. Yuck! Not even mayo, whole wheat bread, salami and sweet pickles can kill the taste...

Cilantro is best used like a spice. I chop up a small amount and put it in soup or in salsa. I guess maybe you could compare it to Parsley, matter of fact I think sometimes it is called Chinese Parsley. But the taste is way too strong to be using it like lettuce on a sandwich, try some spinach on your sandwich, it has more vitamins and is not that bad. #:)

Yes, it is very strong! Wow! Yeah, I can actually stomach spinach. I think spinach has an acquired taste to it, but I know if I eat a lot of it, I'll get really strong! I really couldn't stand spinach when I was younger.

I usually use cilantro as an herb. It's great with tomato sauces like the ones you use in spaghetti or pizza sauce. I've really never heard of anyone eating it straight. I'd bet if you ate a whole chunk of it by itself it wouldn't taste good. I would try using it as a seasoning instead.

Cilantro is meant to be used as a spice in stuff. Its used in like salsa which is the best. It is not intended to just be eaten to strong.

lol! yeah cilantro isnt a "vegetable" that you just eat straight out. like the others have said, its an herb. chopped up its fantastic with steak tacos, chop it into salsa, chop it into your chicken and verde (sauce) enchaladas!! cilantro in chicken enchaladas is very tasty..just make sure you use the verde (green) sauce and not the red sauce..it doesnt taste nearly as good with the red. i really cant think of any sandwhich that it would go good in though...but give it another try in almost any meat based mexican dish!

Marcola you and I seem to be in the minority but I just cannot stand the taste of cilantro.I think I am actually allergic to it as my throat closes and its hard for me to swallow. I really do not like the stuff at all.

I don't know about being in the minority since it seems most people here don't eat it raw. It's not very edible that way.

Cilantro is commonly used in mexican food. It is usually chopped up into salsa. You don't use a lot of it. I have had it before and it didn't really taste like anything, so I'm not sure why it tasted so horrible.

LOL Yes it is bad isn't it. I had tasted it on occaision mixed in things like salsa. I have always hated it but never knew what it was. Then one day I figured it out. Cilantro seems like it would make a better pesticide than herb. LOL

I use cilantro as an herb. As mentioned above, I use it to make salsa. Also, I put it in rice with a little lime juice. Have you ever eaten at the Chipotle chain? This is very similar to how they make the rice they put in their burritos. I would hate to have the taste of a bite of cilantro in my mouth - strong stuff.

Never heard of the Chipotle chain. I don't think we even have one in this town. Thanks for the reply!

Hi Marcola, Cilantro is called as Coriander in India and it is used extensively here in our cooking. It is not a vegetable but only a herb. It has to be used as a herb would be. It is very healthy too. Just try out this recipe. You can use this chutney as a paste for sandwiches also. Just apply butter , this paste and then out in sliced cucumbers, tomato slices or cheese or what ever it is you like to add to your sandwich and try it out. Coriander Chutney Ingredients Coriander leaves 1 bunch Coconut 3 cups Green chillies 10-12 (as per your taste) Asafoetida (hing) 1/4 tsp. Lemon 1 medium size Salt as per the taste. Method:Clean the coriander leaves and chop them and keep it aside. In a blender grind these coriander leaves, coconut, chillies, asafoetida and salt with limited amount of water so that the paste remains in the thick consistency. Check the taste of chutney and add chillies and salt as you want. Sqeeze lemon juice in the chutney and refrigerate it. http://www.bawarchi.com/contribution/contrib1564.html

Hi Marcola I think none will eat cilantro as food or vegetable because of its very strong, kind of peculiar flavor, it is used as a herb in some food items to enhece the flavor only.. Thank you so much for this discussion. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . God bless you. Welcome always.
