Saved for something but as soon as I bought it something else came up

I am not talking about something coming up that I did not know about, like I know that I have to get birthday presents, I know that I need a new cutting board, or I know we are going to Florida in the Fall and need money, or I know that I plan to donate so much for a charity next month, it is something that just so happened right after I saved for something that I wanted, and now had enough money to pay for it. Like I finally had enough money to get that singing course and that good voice digital recorder with the mp3 player. So right after it, there is this notice in our church bulletin, that the seminary needed help, but it could also have been something else. Maybe my computer would have blown up, maybe someone stole my good shoes, maybe there was a flood, etc. It does not matter. AS soon as I save enough money to buy something i really want, then something unexpected would come. Do you find that when you buy something that you saved for, that another financial crisis happens, like maybe a car accident after you finally bought that high def Tv or whatever? Why don't these financial crisises happen before we buy that item? It does not seem fair.

It happens to me all the time.I get enough money saved for something big and i end up having to take the dog to the vet replace car tires, have the vet make a call for my horse. It drives me nuts! I feel like i'm always playing catchup.

At least it is before you spent the money. It feels worse if it is after you used it up. Maybe that is what made me a saver. Now I do have an emergency fund and all that. But I wish these things came up before I spent the money. Maybe I should start a "we are going to screw you up by saying we need the money desperately fund."

It feels terrible if you've already used it and suddenly need it for something major. I HATE spending the money ive saved though.

I can never save money because we always need it to buy food when we are completely broke so I have to transfer it to my current account and spend it. At the moment I need a piano stool and I've found one for a reasonable amount on Ebay I just need to save up for it. Hopefully my dad will be able to give me the money but he's broke at the moment too so probably not. I've just started piano lessons again and the chair I'm using is the wrong height so it's really important or it will effect my playing.

I was never able to save money until about ten years ago, rather late since I am not 65. My husband says I can now spend money, but I cannot. When we were first married, most of the money went to the mortgage, car payments, and then food. So I could not save. I stopped working when we wanted children, and since I could only get them from adoption, it would not be write for me to be a career woman when I really wanted children. Women who get pregnant have it easy. There is no impulse for them to stay home. They can chose to go to work. Us adoptive parents have to prove that we really love children and so we have to be home to prove we are real mother even though we are. It is society's view of us.

Yes and you cannot return the stuff, because if you really waneeded it, you start to use it already and if you did return it, you will get it later on or you will go down in the basement and scream, "Do I have to ask "who ever needed the money for something else' is it okay for me to buy that 'whatever I bought' Am I a little kid?" Yes they would like that. I remember when I had this telemarketing job, and I bought something later on, but he did not pay me enough to pay for that item, I felt like phoning him back and say 'What is wrong with me needed a book?' Do I have to call you everytime and say "please can I use part of my salary for chocolate bar?" I felt like that and I sometimes felt like saying "everyone in the whole world can get this, but not me."

I know exactly what you mean, suspenseful. Few years back, I sold my station wagon and planned on using the money I got from it to buy new tires for my Escort being they were bald. Well, on the way home from cashing the cashier's check at the bank, a friggin' buck ran out in front of my car. I seen it coming and slowed down but didn't stop. He bounced off an oncoming car that I tried to warn by flashing my headlights to slow down. Well, the driver didn't. Anyways, bounced off right into my path whereas I ended up running right over it. Did $4,000 damage to my front end and my a/c unit. I didn't have rental on my car either so the $800 that was supposed to be for tires ended up going to the deductable for my car insurance to have it fixed AND a rental car while it was in the shop. I was PISSED! I ended up driving most of the winter on bald tires being I had no extra money saved up for them. To make matters worse, the buck ended up being too destroyed to have it processed for meat. -grumbling- Causes me that much money and can't even feed my family.

It was rutting season and the only thing he had on his mind was a doe he smelled in heat. When they are like that, they run full tilt and don't stop till they reach the doe. That buck ran full tilt into that poor lady's car. She wasn't injured but boy was she shaken up. One of his antlers shattered the driver side window. She was darn lucky that antler didn't go thru her head. I ended up holding the lady tight in a bear hug, she was shaking that much. She felt much better after a few minutes of our hug and thanked me for it. I knew right then and there that she needed one really bad after what happened to her.

I know exactly what you're talking about!! That used to happen to me all the time. I decided that I would start an emergency fund now that I'm a homeowner. Once I saved a few hundred I started a "fun fund" that I'm still adding to. Now if some unexpected disaster comes along, I'm ready! I know it's really hard to save money, especially now that things are so expensive but tossing your change in a can every day helps and paying yourself first does, too. That means from every paycheck or other earnings, you pay yourself a set amount. It could be $5 or $50 or even more. But that's yours and not to be used for anything else. That way, you'll always be ready for opportunities or emergencies.

Are you obligated to fund the seminary? You can help by organizing a fund raiser or something, can't you? It's a shame to forego those lessons and recorder, they would bring a lot of joy to your life. I thought health care was free in Canada?

It is free, but this is for the stuff not covered by our medical insurance. for instance going out the province, not basic care in hospitals. AS for the seminary, they expect all of us to help, but I do not have any extra money to do so.

That happens to me too. There is always somethin to take away the money you save for something you want for yourself. I don't know whether it just means that I wasn't meant to have what I want or not but it is very frustrating and I begrudge having to give up something for me to pay something for someone or something else.

I have it happen after I buy the item. Now before I thought it meant that it would happen only when I bought a chocolate bar or a package of chips, something for someone like me who cannot have sodium or too much sugar should have, but I found it was also when I got something that I really needed, like those singing lessons and that voice recorder. Of course I could have not got them, but then I would not have been able to learn how to sing properly unless I took an hour or two extra out of my day (and not make enough money on myLot) to go to lessons that were at least a mile away.

Actually, for me, the financial crisis happens right when I finally get enough money for the item. So I divert the money. I think it would definitely be worse to have the crisis happen just after I had spent the money, though, so I can sympathize with your timing woes.

If only it were that simple. But because I have that crisis after I spent the money means either someone is playing tricks with me or I do not have that "oh something horrible is coming up" instinct. I do have an emergency fund, and I do plan what Church charities I will support and at what time, but do not have extra set aside if something happens like the building burned down and I do not like that the emergency crisis comes after I bought something that would have helped. After all those singing lessons and the voice recorder would help me singing solos at the Easter and Christmas concerts praising God. It was not as if I intended to sing in a night club.

Ours seems to be happening while we have enough money. We were just going to use it to catch up on a bill. I think they call that Murphy's Law.

That Murphy must be one rotten character. This does not just happen now and again, it is all the time. I am waiting for when I have enough money for my lap top and have already charged it and gotten read to write the check, if maybe a rare earthquake will devastate all of Winnipeg. We do not have to worry about bills now, just for the prescriptions my husband has to take.

Yet it is after we get something we need. And the thing that comes later, is it more important than what we buy first? If it had been more important it should have come first That is what is annoying. I mean we have the money and it is not as if we are little children who are going to spend it on smarties and potato chips, for us the item we buy is important. I mean if I need something that costs $120 I am going to save $120 plus gst and pst, I am not going to save $240 plus because something else will come up.

I also save for something special I want to buy but I also have a "rainy day" piggy bank where I have been putting all my silver change from my money purse. I do this once a week and have been doing this for a few years. I do not touch that money except in real emergencies never just for an "I want" item.

Need is a couple of big steps higher than just want. In fact I put new laptop in my emergency must haves and bought a new one 2 week ago while my other was being repaired...now I have two of them!

It's not fair is it? I have some things I consider somewhat necessary and I don't get to buy those either. It's usually something like a trip to the dentist that eats up the money or a car repair. It's hard to build up that account for these expenses when they pop up as you are saving for them! I'm trying not to think negatively as prices seem to be pricing at an alarming rate. Maybe we will all have to learn to live with a lot less. (But not without my computer and internet darn it.)

It happens after I buy those things and as it usually is, it is not just junk, the balance is for something I was planning to get but decided against it as even though it was necessary, I could not afford it. Then suddenly, like now getting my Old Age Security or someone leaves me some money, I can now buy it and have enough to save with. Then as soon as I bought it, something else happens. I bet if it were not the Seminary needing money, it would be my computer exploding, or my shoes falling apart. I mean somethings cannot be kept off forever, like in some places, a new stove, and in mine, singing lessons and a voice recorder.

Unlike you mine always happen before I get the item I have been saving for so it is never bought. An example of this was that for two years I had been putting away for a carpet for the house as I still have bare boards and every time I got close to the amount needed I would receive a car maintenance bill or would need to make a journey to visit a long-distance away sick relative. I have now nearly enough for the carpet again as my dad has helped me with a cheque towards it so as I cannot use this for anything else I will at last be able to get. Ellie :D

It does make your frustrated when you really need something like a new carpet. I guess even if you had an emergency fund, that would have gone too. At least you had a warning, me, the requests come after I buy something. That is why I do not buy new stuff that often. I fear that as soon as I buy something, some other needed that is more important comes up.

It never fails! I think that's called Murphey's Law, or at least its related. Murphey's Law says everything that can go wrong will go wrong. But I've added to it, that everything that could possibly come will come up, at the worst possible time. We had started a small remodel project in our basement. We purchased all the basic, big dollar stuff necessary. Then found out we had a black mold problem to deal with. That project more than tripled. So we worked at that, and getting everything needed. Now my fiance gets laid off, so I'll have two rooms with nice walls, and have to wait for paint and shelves. UGH....

My husband had his stroke, and so now we have to delay upgrading the basement, but to me, saving for something and finally having enough money to get it, and then after that, having this request for money for the seminary and having to upgrade my RRSP and put more money in it is really making it hard. And had I not been given wrong information, I would have upgrade the RRSP sooner, but then the computer went and I had to get a new one, and I had to pay it off in half the time instead of going for the whole three years. Everything comes at the wrong time.

Its called a challenge dear. If you look it as a challenge, instead of a struggle, it willbe easier to get through. Plus you will feel more victorious when you can look back and see all you were able to accomplish. Best wishes to you!

Yeah, that happens to me a lot. I wonder if God puts the desire or need for some things into me so that I will save up the money because he knows I will need it for something more important in the future. It's kinda frustrating, though, because I never get to buy anything for myself. And, when I finally do buy something for myself, I wonder what disaster could be around the corner that I should have spent the money on. I guess I should just have more faith in God and spend the money without worrying about it.

I thought it only happened to me. I wonder about God saying that, but I figure it is the devil saying, "heh heh heh. You should have put it on charge and pay all that extra interest, so you can also do something more fruitful. I love to see people being afraid of money!" I do think it is a matter of choices, and I do not think we should be punished for saving for something by having another request to come up. I could have put the singing course and the digital player on credit and still wrote a check to help the seminary, but then I would have had to pay extra interest charges and what would that say about my financial responsibility?

That has happened to me many times. Sometimes I save up for something and don't even buy it before something comes along that I need the money for. I think that's better though cause at least I still have the money. Thats the reason I try to be cautious and think before I buy. I often get money for my birthday and Christmas but I have a hard time spending it on frivolous things right away cause I know there is going to be something else I need it for.

If it happened before I bought the stuff, then I would feel better. I would have known there was something more important, but to me it happens after I bought the stuff. And it is not something like chocolate bars, chips, or large eye goggles. If it had been spent it on something frivolous, I would think "well I deserved this for being such a fool" but I have been planning to get those singing lessons and getting a better digital recorder since I want to be able to sing solo at our Church concerts and maybe do some sacred music for some time. Oh and I need to get a new printer, and a better computer. I hope nothing goes wrong.
