Yes one of my fave veggies is cucumbers. Today I planted 4 bush cuke plants and last week I planted some pickling cukes for making some dill pickles this year. I pant the cukes along side the house next to the driveway. They get sunshine almost all day and have thrived in this spot for many years. Do you pickle your own cukes at all? If so do you wish to share a recipe for them at all here with me and fello myLotters? Thanks in advance.

I usually just make refrigerator dills - but growing up my parents canned the most wonderful pickles in so many varieties. Of all that they did though my favorites were called
"Paprika Sticks" as a grown woman I wanted to make these myself - but no one could locate the recipe (folks stopped canning a few years prior) so I have searched in vain online for Paprika sticks.
When my father recently passed away and I was going through some things with Mom, we came across the recipe! it is no wonder I could not find it online, there is absolutely no paprika in the recipe (unless it was copied wrong)
This was originally my great aunt's recipe and likely her own creation....
Wash 18 med cukes, cut into sticks.
cover with boiling water, set aside to stand over night.
In morning pack into jars solidly (aprx 9 wide mouth quarts)
-----
syrup
3 3/4 cup cider vinegar
6 cup sugar
3 TBL salt
4.5 tsp celery seed
4.5 tsp tumeric
3/4 tsp mustard seed
----
Boil 5 minutes - pour over the cukes
seal in hot water bath for 5 min after coming to a boil.
another recipe you might enjoy is one that I think I originally got from Country Magazine
Cucumber and Radish salad
peel 2 cucumbers - slice in half lengthwise and scrape out the seeds (I use a grapefruit spoon for this and it works great)
slice into discs - stack and cut into julienne slices.
clean and julienne slice radishes to equal 1 cup
add in some diced red onion
place inside medium glass bowl and add in a teaspoon of kosher salt (or sea salt or your preference) stir together
in a separate small glass bowl combine 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1 teas sugar and 1.5 teas of olive oil (add some garlic and black pepper or other flavors that you like) stir together and mix into the cucumber/radish bowl.
chill and enjoy
This is also good with some shredded cheese added and placed on a cold sandwich.

Thanks. Now in the Paprika Sticks what type of cukes are used? Different types have different taste and as well as different consitency etc when boiled like this is why I ask?

I like them any way I can eat them. Some nights when they are fruiting I will go outside at like 1 a.m. and just pick one and slice off chunks eating it in the darkness of my front deck.

I was wondering what a cuke was.
I planted some this year in our garden and are hoping they grow well. The plants are growing, but I don't know when to expect to see the 'cukes'. I've never thought about planting some for making dill pickles. Is there a certain kind you have to plant for that?

I fins it funnt that a lot of people never knew what a "CUKE" was. It takes about a month or so for them to start showing I think. But it depends on the variety also.

Cucumbers are very tasty and good during hot summer.
I have to start my gardening. I am very late.
My strawberries are almost ready. I guess I will have some in the beginning of June.

Here in my country Grandpa Bob, we are just not into pickling. If we want pickles, we buy them straight from the market. Our palate also is not into eating pickles and they are more of a garnish for us. 99.9% of us could or would only tolerate a little pickle. However, 99.9% of us also would eat cucumber by just peeling it & then slicing them thinly. We just add vinegar and maybe a dash of salt and that's it.

Another good way to eat cucmbers is peeled then
sliced. Add a little sour cream then a little sugar.
Mix it covering all the slices. So tasty.

I love pickles! I love cucumbers too! My mom used to make her own pickles and still does (just not every year). I have tried to can pickles a couple of times and they never seem to work- It's like th lids seal- then you can still pop them with your finger- and the pickles are mushy- I have given up-
We still plants cucumbers- as we all love cucumbers! right out of the garden- peeled - washed- and eat!

My daughter loves cucumbers. I like them but only as a pickle. I have never heard the called cukes before though. We planted our garden in a new spot this year also because it will get more sun and we are doing some landscaping also. My husband doesn't get into landscaping and yard work like I do. He doesn't really care what everything looks like but I strive to make it do and look the best as possible. I was raised that way and he wasn't. We have come a long way in 16 years but he still has no interest in things like that, really. He tries to act like he does because of me, but I know better.

I'm not doing cukes this year. I asked hubby if he wants me to plant a couple when I saw the plants at Wally World this past weekend but he said no. I like to make relish out of them but have no recipes to share being I lost the only one I had. Have no clue to it's whereabouts at all.

I love cucumbers! I like them when they are still pretty small and they do not have a lot of seeds. I have never pickled my own cukes before. I do like to put slices of them into a mixture of vinegar, water, salt, pepper, and sliced onions and let them sit in the fridge at least over night which is kind of like pickling them. I will sometimes add a little sugar to the mix and make them more like bread and butter pickles.

Yes that is a shorter version of pickling. The best
bet is to use sea salt or coarse salt actually as
it helps in the pickiling of them.

Last year we pickled our regular cukes. they were straight 8's. And they did turn out pretty good. We used a little too much vinegar though. My wifes boss gave us a mixture of middle eastern spices and they were great for the pickles. This year we bought a pack of pickling spices as well as the pickle cukes. We made 4 jars and they lasted us about 5 months and were still good. So that is no problem for you. I have about 300 cukes total all year and give many to the neighbors as well and they love them.

Okay I'll fill you in how much I love cukes. Did you know that the area where cukes grow is usually about 10 degrees cooler than right beside them? This is due to the amunt of moisture they produce. neat little bit of info. I can find one this week and send it to ya. Gotta write this down as well or I'll forget it.
