I feel like ripping my hair out right now. My youngest son is sick again. It seems lately he is getting migrains. The poor guy is seven and already has Autism and a Sensory Disorder to deal with and no it seems Migrains. And I am talking the kind that knocks him out forces him to vomit its not fun. I have some releif now he is asleep and singing its actually very cute. I dont know why he is singing in his sleep.
So I want to see if any of you have any advise for me. I have migrains myself but what do you do when it is a child who cant tell you when a headache starts?
Also he will not take his medicine easily any tips on that? And can you take junior strenth ibuprophin and disove it in liquids?

Hi dear
really sad to hear about ur son, migriane is really very bad and the intense pain can result in vomit, differnt people have differnt remedies which suit them, i would suggest instead of self medication go to the doc he is visting for Autism and Sensory disorder and he may help u in it. Self medication may not get along with his prescription
Wish ur kid all the best
Take care

My oldest gets a lot of headaches, some are stronger than the other's. She has never vomited over it, but it knocks her on her butt.
I scrolled down to see if anyone had different advice. Everything everyone said I agree with. As soon as he says his head hurts, make him lay down in a dark room and don't move. You can mash up his pills and put them in whatever foods he likes or is willing to eat at the moment. You can also blend it in with his favorite juice. Just follow his moods, if you see him rubbing his head, ask if it hurts, then go from there. Just have him lay down in a dark room with no noise and have him don't move. Then mash of the meds and add it to juice or food, and have him take it.

I do it all the time with my kids, when they don't want to swallow the pills. I even added the liquid meds to juice, just so I didn't have to deal with them hating the flavor. Mashing the pills are hard, I just put the pill in a spoon, then take another spoon and put it on top and press down. That way, I don't have mashed meds all over the place.

I read your other responses, great advice. My hubby used to have migrains, the only thing that helped him was taking some excedrin, laying down, with a cold cloth or an ice pack for his head, in a dark quiet room. Good luck, I hope you can find something to help the little guy. I feel so sorry for the little fellow, I feel sorry for th mom too. Its tough on us when the little ones are hurt or sick.

Poor chap, its feels sad when children suffer! When I was a child I used to have severe bouts of headaches which ultimately was diagnosed due to eating some food. I could never eat cheese, Pizza, butter...and all yummy stuffs. But now I am over it. Thanks God I am.
I think consult an paedtrician who would guide you through it. I am sure this is curable.
Love to your child.

Yeah we are thinking the sun may be the trigger with him. The sun and heat of summer have always been hard on him. With the sensory disorder he doesnt know how to tell when hes too hot and will over heat if not watched closely.

i understand your situation, i know how hard it is to deal with a sick child especially on your child's case, my cousin is autistic too and my grandmother took care of him since birth, i saw how hard it is too take care of him, although he is a good boy his defect makes it hard for him to express his feelings.

Yeah, that is best overall that you pray for the family whose kid is real sick. My concerns and cares go out to that boy who is real sick. And him and his family will be in my prayers, even I never met them at all. So hopefully that little boy will learn new stuff eventually. Right?

You're poor little guy seems to have more than his share! My grand daughter will get one once in a great while, and as soon as she throws up she starts to feel ok. Poor kids! (And you too headaches are no good.) I'm going to be seeing a friend at the end of the month who if I'm remembering right said she used to have migraines, but she found out something.. either that she now eats, or now doesn't eat..(?) or something, and she no longer has migraines, I'll have to ask her about it.. I heard that children grow out of them.. it does seem like our grand daughter hasn't had one for some time.. prayers and well wishes.. and don't pull out yer hair!

Be careful with migraine food triggers:
Soups, peanuts, MSG, cheese and much more.
Make sure give his a lot of rest and let him stay oin dark room.
Sleeping may be very helpful.

When my daughter had to take medication in her youth, then we put it in her drink. I'm so sorry your youngest is sick again. I completely feel for you, as my youngest has severe allergies and is lactose intolerant.
Is his migraine genetic? I have genetic migraines, which I control by being careful to avoid certain places like smoke, peanut butter, bright lights, loud noises, perfume are just a few things. Hope he is feeling better quickly.

Minie, my 13 year old 2 years ago started having headaches. i thought at first that he was just wanting to get out of a difficult class situation. Gradually they became worse, with vomiting after the onset, and right before the headache he would tell me that his vision would get blurring and the lights would have halos... all classic symptoms of migraines. I took him in the fall to his ped and he run some tests, sure enough what Jake is experiencing is cluster migraines. The Doc put him on a med called Zomig, and if he takes a pill before the point of vomiting, it will stop the headache completely. It took him a time of two to get to the point he recognized, the very first signs in his vision to be able to take a pill fast enough. But now he has it down, and the occurrences of headaches seem to be lessening. I am hoping he grows out of them altogether and maybe its just the transition in to puberty.

Sweatheart when My son was 8 or 9 he had awful times with vomiting and headaches which totally wiped him out! The hospital did all sorts of tests and found nothing so they sent him to the Child Psychologist and she diagnosed him with a medical condition within 1/2 an hour - it was called CVS and it was linked to my migraines! CVS (cyclical vomiting syndrome) ruined my sons life before it was diagnosed and after it was great , he soon got to know the warning signs of an attack and for wonderful tablets which helped him but as you say he could let me know when an attack started! This was 5or 6 years ago so they may have a similar medication you can take daily these days.
I always try to get meds in liquid form and use an oral syringe - just squirt it in the back of their mouths (not their throats - that chokes them and covers you in medication when they barf it back up) makes it much easier to give! xxx

i found that the new types of light bulbs give me migraines more frequently, the best bubls to prevent them are the reveal bulbs.. does he have ear plugs? and sunglasses? silly things but they really really help my cousin (also autistic and noise sensitive)

I wish that would work but he truelly hates med we have even caught him sticking his finger down his throught to get the medicine back out. He has a sensory disorder which causes him to not like the taste of it because its not common to him. Now if they ever come out with ketchup flavored meds it could work lol.

I had a migrane once and that was because i was drinking too much.. and stress. so i know that outside influences will cause them.. some people need to take certain things out of the diet. like milk, or chocolate. but they used those things in everything. Binders and stuff for everyday products so yyou will have to read everything. i hope he feels better soon. poor little guy

I would try to make sure he gets enough magnesium, which is hard if you are going dietary. It takes a supplement, usually. While you are at it, you should ask your doctor if you can take extra magnesium. It has made a world of difference for my headaches. His headaches could be from sinus and allergy as well. You may be able to determine by behavior when you think he is getting a headache and head it off that way. I have had some luck with drinking two glasses of gatorade when I start with a headache, It might help your son as well.

I am truly sorry to hear about all this. I see why you have to get rid of all your hair. Right? It is due to your youngest son being sick again. Is he allergic to hair? I know migraine headaches are not real fun at all. Well, I will definitely have ya's in my prayers. Well, it is really important that he goes to the doctor. Right? Just, please be patient as your son will get better and follow the doctor's orders.

Sorry for the late response but I have been out of commission for about a month now.. I am back and have over 900 emails to go through.. I am picking through the ones that I am going to be able to answer and deleting the rest.. That is the only way to catch up.. I noticed that your son was having migraines and knew that I could sympathize with you.. My son used to have migraines and the only thing to help was a prescription for Phenergan and it had to be the suppositories, as the pills would not stay down.. It knocked him out and when he woke up, it was always gone.. Hope you have luck finding something for him.. It is awful, we had to make sure there was no noise nor any light as it made it so much worse.. One time it was so bad, the doctor had to examine him in the dark.. She was such a nice doctor and did do the exam in the dark without complaining.. My son did finally grow out of them.. I have also heard that chocolate can trigger a migraine, not sure how true it is but I heard or read it somewhere.. Good luck and hope he is better soon..
